You never hear people say this but Spore has such a fucking incredible sense of scale and it does it in a way that I've seen NOTHING ELSE do as effectively.
Like, you start as this tiny little cell, and slowly get bigger and bigger, the cells on the previous stage gradually getting smaller. Then, in the creature stage, the planets in your solar system are visible. The planet you're on is unbelievably massive and can't even be fully explored without the help of mods. Then, in the tribal stage, it zooms out and you're able to access a majority of the continent you're on easily, and eventually, in civ stage, the entire planet. Then, in the space stage, you can, in theory, explore the entire galaxy, but it's so goddamn big that doing so, controlling it all, is near impossible.
And while you do all of this, in the background, distant galaxies are visible, just as big as the one you're in, but never reachable. I hope games like elysian eclipse and thrive can pull this off just as well- if not better than spore did because it's honest to god my favourite part of the game. Looking up and seeing the other planets and the distant galaxies in the creature stage is fucking enthralling.
