•THINGS EVERY NEW WITCH SHOULD KNOW ABOUT WITCHCRAFT•

-PART ONE-

If you’re a new witch, you probably aren’t too sure where to start.

“Which path should I follow?” “Do I have to be wiccan to be a witch?” “When can I join a coven?” “What should I learn first?” “Can I be a witch if I’m a guy?”

First of all, we’ve all been there, so don’t worry. This is a journey we all take. Witchcraft is what you make it.

•RELIGION•

You absolutely DON’T have to be religious to be a witch. I personally am an athiest, so I don’t involve any deities in my craft, however many people do. Witchcraft as it is, is entirely separate to religion, however lots of people choose to practice the two together.

•GENDER•

You DON’T have to be female to be a witch. Anyone who says that is a liar, or misinformed. Your gender doesn’t impact your craft unless you want it too, and if you wish you can even omit all gendered associations from your craft, as I myself do.

There are also arguments surrounding the word “witch”, so to clear it up, the word “witch” itself is gender neutral, so you have the right to identify with that word, regardless of your gender.

•PATHS•

There are many paths a witch can follow, however lots of modern witches are eclectic (take parts from different paths) and wish to have their own tailored path. As an eclectic witch myself, I can’t tell you too much about paths, however there are many pages on the internet that can help you. None of these paths are wrong to follow, and we all have different interpretations.

•COVENS•

Once again, you don’t need to be part of a coven to be a witch. Many people choose to be part of them, however many people choose to be solitary. Being a solitary witch does not exclude you from talking to other witches, or working with other witches from time to time. There are many places for witches to socialise, both on the internet and in person. If you are concerned about learning without a coven, then I would advise you to look into discord. Although most are not covens, there are several witchy servers there, and many are happy to help new witches.

I hope that this has helped answer some of the questions new witches have. This is just the first post in a series, so there are definetely more to lookout for. I wish you the best luck with your craft, and feel free to ask any questions in the comments.

Hey guys here are some tips for charging objects for spell-casting and why!

1. Bury the item you want to charge. Sometimes an item is used so often or for so long it starts to absorb energies around it. Reconnect it to the earth, literally grounding the item.

2. Charge with heat. There are many ways you can add heat to an item. The hot sun, a candle, an oven, a stove top, even the microwave. Please be careful when doing this however as it is very easy to get burned. As someone of finnish decent however, sauna stones are something I have often, and would recommend others try!

3. Although an unusual way to consider charging, make sure the space around your altar is clean. Or clean something while carrying what it is you want to charge. The purpose of this is to transform the space, and remove additional energies that might be clogging up your spell

4. If possible, soak an item in salt water for a period of time. Salt’s status as an electrolyte means that it’s atoms carry a charge. I would recommend at least 24 hours. This is a very literal way to charge something, but also very easy. Note that any salt will work as epsom salts are also electrolytes (just not ones you should eat)

5. Use the New or Full moon. Naturally these are powerful times to spell cast, collect, and charge items, as even ocean waves are influenced moreso during these times. This also may be why your spells are not working–about a weak after a full or new moon, the moon is at its weakest. This reflects in the oceans as neap tides. Avoid spellcasting during those times.

6. Have someone close to you hold the item for a length of time. Every person has their own energy, and their own shared energy, and if the spell involves them, or they have a quality you want to invoke in yourself,

7. For spells relating to change, take items from, or use a charging spell in liminal spaces. What does this mean? Loosely, liminal places that are only meant for transition, getting from one place to another. These are also places that make most people uneasy because lingering feels like it is outside of it’s normal use. This includes stairwells, elevators, train stations, empty parking lots, schools during break, even when at art galleries alone, because they imitate rooms we live in, while not being livable space.

How I Set Up My Alter Space

How I Set Up My Alter Space

Your alter should be as unique and personal as you are. It’s a reflection of your space and your connection to your spirits. It should have anything on there that you feel connected to and stirs up magic inside yourself. So even though this is how I set up my alter there aren’t really any ‘rules’. Your alter can be as formal or informal as you like.

How I Set Up My Alter Space

Crystals are one of the main things I keep on my alter. A lot of my crystals are small and I usually rotate them out depending on my mood or what I want to influence me or a situation I’m in. Currently I have a bunch of moonstones on there from the Full Moon the other day. I used them during my reading so I wanted to keep that energy present.

How I Set Up My Alter Space

I have a little bit of sage in a abalone shell left over from prior cleansing work. I keep that up on the alter too. I never toss out the soot from the burned incense just in case I need black salt for later. (I have heard about the shortage of sage so this is my last bit. I think in future I’ll switch up what I’m burning maybe Frankincense next time?)

How I Set Up My Alter Space

Sometimes I don’t have candles up there but I do like them for a fire element representation. My current obsession are white votives in clear glass holders I picked up from the dollar store. I like them because I can purchase so many. Next time I think I’ll grab some pillars and have the back of the alter lined with different sized candles.

How I Set Up My Alter Space

I also use seashells for my alter, mostly for a water representation. I always like to have elemental displays just for balance. The other day I swapped out the shells for a jar of moon water though.

Other things I have on my alter are things that represent my ancestors, small animal bones (naturally collected), and eggshells. Some of my other favorites to put on my alter are seeds, salt, flowers or herbs, coins, oils, sticks or rocks or anything that feels like it just goes there and adds it’s energy to that space.

Imbolc Spell

Imbolc Spell

°˖✧ Welcome Spring and wake up from the Winter rest ✧˖°

Imbolc is a time for cleansing and planning, knowing that spring and more energy is on its way ❁*✲゚*

Go on a stroll in nature, it could be a park or some woods near your house and gather some small rocks or maybe some birch from there, think about the things that you want to accomplish in this year and know that they will come true if your intention is true <3

Focus on that and with it in mind go to make this little spell.

Put the rocks inside the jar which are the stepping stones for your goals, one for every big goal you have, then add 3 little seeds inside it, representing all the growth you are gonna make.

Then write in a piece of paper your intention, or maybe use a sygil to represent it or both.

Lit your candles (2 or more) around your jar and in this moment try to bring all your energy to the positive things that will come with spring.

Close the jar and put it in your altar as an intention for the upcoming months.

*In this imbolc time you can also clean your altar and set it for new intentions and take away what does not serve you anymore either by burning or proper discard.

**If you can, plant another 3 seeds outside or in pots, whichever is best for that particular plant

Above all enjoy this time, have a meal and relax, with your coven or solo❁*✲゚*

Protection/Warding Black Salt

image

Not to be confused with volcanic salt/Himalayan black salt/kala namak. Black salt has strong protective properties, especially when combined with other protective/uncrossing herbs (herbs meant to undo a curse or hex). It’s used to absorb negative energy, create wards, and undo curses. It’s also good for banishing and binding. Here’s my recipe:

What you’ll need:

Cleansing items, such as smoke, bells, spray, whichever you personally use.

Sea Salt

Charcoal Disk (or charcoal powder)

Black Candle

Rosemary

Garlic Powder

Chili Powder

Crushed Red Pepper Flakes

Paprika

Black Pepper

Black Candle

Bowl

Mortar & Pestle

Black stones/crystals

Any additional protective items you may have. (Here I gathered dried red peppers, dried chili peppers, lemon, sage, and ashed from a Litha bonfire.) These items are for You to draw some extra energy from, and won’t be directly added to the salt.

Frankincense and/or Dragon’s Blood incense.

Instructions:

First, cleanse your space using whatever best works for you.

After cleansing, start your frankincense and/or dragon’s blood incense, this will be going for the duration of the spell.

Light your black candle.

Gather your supplies as seen in the picture.

As always, make sure your intention is strong, and continuously draw from it. Return to your intent no matter how often your mind wanders (which it will, that’s ok).

In a bowl, mix the salt with the herbs first.

Remember your other protective items are there for you to use. If needed, refocus on their protective energies and draw from that.

Use a mortar and pestle to crush the charcoal disk separately. This takes a lot of physical energy, and it is very messy. If you prefer to use charcoal powder, that’s ok, though charcoal disks will be cheaper. I like charcoal disks because I feel more energetically involved in/connected to the process.

Mixing counterclockwise, mix the very finely crushed charcoal into the salt. Mix. Use as many charcoal disks needed to get to the level of darkness you want.

Mind wandering? Remember your intent! Refocus!

When you’re done, transfer the black salt into a jar and set the crystals around it in a circle. Let it continue to build and charge this way, until you feel it is ready. If you’re not sure, it can also be until the candle or incense goes out.

image

Done! Sprinkle this around the parameter of your wards, such as along doorways and windows. It can also be used during unhexing/curse breaking spells, general protection spells, banishing, and binding.

This is NOT FOR CONSUMPTION.

Even if you used edible activated charcoal, know that 1. charcoal interacts with many medications by basically absorbing them and rendering them useless, including birth control, diabetes medications, cancer drugs, and more. and 2. I’m not sure this would taste great?

🔧 Tools of Witchcraft  🔨

as you go along your path, you’ll find there are many tools used in witchcraft, and they all have different purposes. not all witches use the same tools, some use unconventional ones, some don’t use any. here are some that are well known

🔧 Tools Of Witchcraft  🔨

wand  -  for directing energy in rituals and spells. represents energy, power, and fertility, used as both air and fire element. this can be anything, from a stick, to a pencil, to a spoon.

broom / besom  -  air element, for cleansing negative energy out of a space, or to clear the way for a different type of energy. there are many different ways to make a besom, or any old broom will do

chalice  -  for a mixture that does not need heat applied, for offerings of drinks, or a spell you intend to drink. it’s a water element that can be any type of cup.

crystals  -  earth elementals, often used for conducting and charging and storing specific types of energy. sometimes the shape can influence how the energy is used

candles  -  fire elements good for color magic, also good for applying a fire element. can be carved, anointed with oils or herbs. they come in a variety of shapes: tea lights, votive, pillar, taper and jar candles. some scented candles can be used instead of incense

cauldron  -  water elements for mixing, cooking, and burning things. heat resistant. does not need to be the typical idea of a cauldron, it can be any fire/heatproof pot or kettle.

athame  -  though often characterized as a “black blade”, and an athame can be any knife you set aside for cutting up plants, or harvesting herbs. like a wand, it can be used in rituals to direct energy in a more hostile manner. considered a fire element

bell - earth element, for cleansing and clearing out, and bringing new energies in, very similar to a broom. for calling and dispelling spirits

jars  -  good for containing ingredients, potions (assuming properly kept and sanitized), and herbs, and especially jar spells. sometimes a jar is the only tool you need in a spell

hate all the concepts of “to be a good witch/pagan you have to do ____ with your practice”. your practice should be personal to you, specific to you and what works for you. you do not need all the fancy supplies, you do not have to meditate, you do not have to worship any deities, etc.

you do not have to do anything that does not naturally fit into your practice in order to be a good witch/pagan.
