In Beauty and the Beast, they actually met (in person) fighting each other and Gaston broke into his home, attempting to kill him. While Belle was tormented by Gaston into marrying him since he thought she was pretty. And plus Beast just met Gaston, that isolated furry have no enemy beside the fairy who gave him the red rose, which is weird because red rose are considered for love relationship.
