Hello đ
Please take a moment to read my story.
I am Heba Al-Dahdouh. I currently live in the completely destroyed city of Gaza. Since the war on Gaza began on 7/1/2024, my familyâmy father Nasif, my mother Asmaa, and my siblings Khaled, Ahmad, Muhammad, and Malakâhave been living in constant fear, crying, and suffering due to shrapnel, shells, and bullets.
We have no food, no electricity, no cooking gas, no schools, no homes, no cleaning supplies, and no clothes. Our house was completely destroyed. My school has been bombed, and my brother Khaled's university is now rubble, depriving us all of education. The war has forced us to live in displacement centers, which are just tents unsuitable for living, especially in winter.
Every day we live death, terror, and panic a thousand times because of the ongoing bombardment of my city. The war has killed more than 50 of my relatives and neighbors. At the start of the war, we sought refuge at my aunt's house, but it too became rubble. Imagine: we have survived imminent death more than 20 times and have been displaced among shelters more than 13 times. My siblings and I have suffered from many illnesses due to malnutrition, and we need medication continuously.
If we stay in Gaza, we might lose our lives. Recently, we have been seriously considering leaving Gaza for a safe place. However, travel costs are extremely high. We need over $50,000 to leave Gaza. Due to exorbitant prices, rampant unemployment, lack of security, the ongoing siege, and relentless bombardment, we have lost all our money. How can we live in such insecurity, with constant shelling and shrapnel flying above us? Dear compassionate friends around the world,
With your generous donations, even if small, you can save 7 people from imminent death, allowing us to start a life outside Gaza filled with love, peace, and hope.
With my warmest regards from the city of Gaza,
Heba Al-Dahdouh.

As a rape survivor, I understand the need for safe space together â free from sexist harassment and potential violence. But fear of gender variance also can't be allowed to deceptively cloak itself as a women's safety issue. I can't think of a better example than my own, and my butch friends', first-hand experiences in public women's toilets. Of course women need to feel safe in a public restroom; that's a serious issue. So when a man walks in, women immediately examine the situation to see if the man looks flustered and embarrassed, or if he seems threatening; they draw on the skills they learned as young girls in this society to read body language for safety or danger.
Now, what happens when butches walk into the women's bathroom? Women nudge each other with elbows, or roll their eyes, and say mockingly, "Do you know which bathroom you're in?" Thats not how women behave when they really believe there's a man in the bathroom. This scenario is not about women's safety â its an example of gender-phobia.
And ask yourself, if you were in the women's bathroom, and there were two teenage drag queens putting on lipstick in front of the mirror, would you be in danger? If you called security or the cops, or forced those drag queens to use the men's room, would they be safe?
If the segregation of bathrooms is really about more than just genitals, then maybe the signs ought to read "Men" and "Sexually and Gender Oppressed," because we all need a safe place to go to the bathroom. Or even better, let's fight for clean individual bathrooms with signs on the doors that read "Restroom."
And defending the inclusion of transsexual sisters in women's space does not threaten the safety of any woman. The AIDS movement, for example, battled against the right-wing characterization of gay men as a "high-risk group." We won an understanding that there is no high-risk group â there are high-risk behaviors. Therefore, creating safety in women's space means we have to define unsafe behavior â like racist behavior by white women towards women of color, or dangerous insensitivity to disabilities.
Transsexual sisters are not a Trojan horse trying to infiltrate women's space. There have always been transsexual women helping to build the women's movement â they are part of virtually every large gathering of women. They want to be welcomed into women's space for the same reason every woman does â to feel safe.

Found this very insightful! Very important information
I think one element of Israeli propaganda that a lot people are unintentionally aligning themselves with is the idea of Gaza as the main target of Israeli violence. During the "truce" even, so many people talking about how it was a "pause" even though people in the West Bank, Damascus, and Lebanon were still being killed by Israeli forces because the "truce" was only negotiated for Gaza (where it was also not adhered to). But as a Lebanese person with family in Lebanon and Palestinian loved ones, I need people to remember that Gaza is not a state. Gaza isn't a country. Israel won't destroy Gaza and call it a day as if Gaza is their main goal because it's not. It's "from the river to the sea Palestine will be free" because the free Palestine movement is about ending Israeli occupation of all Palestine and surrounding countries. It's not a reform movement about getting Israel to behave. It's an anti-colonial movement that aims to give ALL of Palestine back to Palestinians. Of course, the extreme violence Israel is enacting on Palestinians in Gaza is horrific. it's also obvious Israel is relying on the horror it's caused in Gaza to distract people from holding them to account for their ongoing violence in the rest of Palestine, as well as Lebanon, Syria and the Congo. Israel divided Palestine up so the world would forget it, don't be party to that. Talk about Gaza, the West Bank, Jenin, Hebron because it's all Palestine and all of it must be free. End the occupation. End the apartheid state of Israel.
