so i wrote a story to song of healing

A small girl stood at the door leading to the mayor’s office. She didn’t want to interrupt, but she slowly creaked open the door, peeking her head through to see what was happening.

The mayor stood behind his desk, walking over to the window behind him. He looked through it, and started to cry. He’s been crying a lot recently, which the little girl knew about.

She just had to ask him what was wrong.

She slowly walked over to the man, and once she reached him, tugged on his shirt. After the man noticed she was there, she spoke up. “Why’re you crying?” The young girl asked quietly, seeing the older man’s back turned to her, putting his palm on the glistening window of the factory.

"That’s not important, Eleanor.“ He said, staring out the window. Eleanor was too short to see out of the window, so she couldn’t tell what he was staring at.

The little girl let out a small "hmph”, and asked again, “I wanna know why you’re crying, it’s important to me!” she said, crossing her arms a bit.

"Y'know, seeing a young person like you wondering why grown people are upset… it gives me a small hint of hope that people will change,“ the man said, not turning to face the girl.

He didn’t know how to show kindness to this young girl trying to help him. No one’s offered him help in years. He’s only in isolation in this giant factory he made.

"It reminds me of how people can be horrible, disgusting in nature. You aren’t, however, you’re that small beacon of light in a room of darkness,” he said, slightly chuckling. It wasn’t a happy chuckle, it sounded like it needed.. something.

"But you didn’t tell me why you’re crying!“ The girl impatiently stomped her foot, the sound echoing through the room.

"I haven’t seen my wife and daughter in years, kid. You wouldn’t understand.” he’d sigh, still crying. He’d let out a breathy sigh, taking his hand off the window.

"This might not help, but..“ The little girl shuffled through her skirt pockets, grabbing something out of it. "Can you turn around? I wanna give you something,” The girl smiled, holding the object in her hands.

The man sighed, turning around. He yanked on his suspenders, looking down at the much shorter girl. “What is it, kid?” he said, his eyes shifting from the floor to the girl.

"Do you want a lollipop? They always make me happy, so I thought they’d make you happy,“ the little girl said, holding a small lollipop in her already small hands.

He froze up, dropping to his knees. He stayed quiet for a moment, before speaking in a shaky tone, ”…Sure, kid. I’ll take it,“ He grabbed the lollipop out of her hands. It was a simple cherry lollipop, like those ones you’d find at a convenience store on the corner of a street. He slowly opened the wrapper, putting the sucker into his mouth.

"Yay! You took it!” he little girl cheered, hugging the man. She was still shorter than him, despite the man being on his knees. Before long, the man hugged back, smiling.

“People in this disgusting, hopeless world don’t deserve people like you, you know that right?” he said, a small laugh escaping from him.

"Now, that’s just not true!“ The girl backed up, putting her hands on his shoulders. "If there were no good people, there’d be no one to reform the bad people, and then there’d only be bad people,” the girl quietly shuffled backward, grabbing more suckers out of her pockets.

“Do you want more? I have a lot from the candy store,” she smiled, sitting on the ground next to the man. The man choked on a sob but smiled a bit.

“Sure, kid. We can split them so it’s even, alright?” The man laughed, and the little girl giggled shortly after.

"Yeah! We can share, that’s why I brought them!“ she said, dumping the suckers on the ground in front of them. The man sighed, slowly splitting the lollipops apart.

"Splitting things apart helps, sometimes… If it’s failing, there’s no point in trying to recover it. Especially if it’s something that’s been failing for a long time. I was failing as both a husband and a dad.” He laughed, slowly tearing up again.

“Well… you’ve been acting like the dad I never had, so I guess it’s a win-win, maybe…” The girl smiled at him, giving him a hug.

The man froze up yet again, tears streaming down his face. “You.. see me as a dad? We’ve only known each other for a week,” he said, tears pooling onto the floor. The little girl nodded, a soft smile appearing on her face.

"..The only thing I needed to know was that people appreciate me like family.. that’s a beautiful thing to me. Thank you.“ he said, tears still running down his face like rain.

"It’s okay.. we’re healing together,” The little girl said, a small sob coming from her throat.

"Emotional scars take time to heal.. we can fix them together.“
