she franken on my stein till i beautiful! great god! his yellow skin scarcely covered the work of muscles and arteries beneath; his hair was of a lustrous black, and flowing; his teeth of a pearly whiteness; but these luxuriances only formed a more horrid contrast with his watery eyes, that seemed almost of the same colour as the dun-white sockets in which they were set, his shrivelled complexion and straight black lips.

Fascinating trend I’ve noticed from lurking in Frankenstein-related tags:

If there’s a male construct, people frame him as the creator’s child. He has full agency and personhood and deserves to be raised in a family. The most obvious example of this is Frankenstein’s Creature, but you’ll see echoes of it with creators of robots, Pinocchio, etc.

If there’s a female construct, people frame it as expected that she’s created to be a romantic/sexual object. I saw a few posts that Pygmalion is morally superior to Victor Frankenstein because he fell in love with his creation, for instance. I don’t need to go into the dozens of “make a female robot and fall for her” tropes.

The most uncomfortable intersection of this dichotomy are the countless posts insisting that it was Victor’s duty as a father to create a female to gift to his son—and that the “wait but she’ll be an actual person of her own” reservations Victor had in the book were immoral. He owes his son (male construct = family, agency, personhood) the gift of a person (female construct = object, no agency, not family). She wouldn’t be a daughter, just “the Bride.” Nothing about Víctor owing her happiness, but the exact opposite: that she must be custom-designed to be miserable and rejected so she’d be trapped with the male-creature.

For a piece of literature where personhood is such a central theme, it’s a disturbing and disappointing trend.

Regency era couples exchanged a wide range of romantic gifts while courting. “The vast majority were given by men,” says Holloway. “Women did give gifts, but the onus was not so much on them to do so. When they did, they gave distinct types of objects—perhaps ruffles or waistcoats they’d made by hand, or a handkerchief embroidered with their hair and their suitor’s hair, literally combining two bodies in a single item.” Men might give a lady specially mixed perfume, miniatures, a silhouette, or book with passages underlined,” says Holloway. “He might present a book saying, ‘Look what I’ve underlined on page 42. Do you agree?’ which was a way to test whether they were literally on the same page.”

A courtship’s progress could be tracked through the particular object given. “A lock of hair was one of the more symbolically important gifts because it was literally cut from the body,” says Holloway. Other gifts worn against a woman’s body were also intensely romantic—or even racy. “Gloves were symbolic of obtaining a woman’s hand in marriage,” says Holloway. “Garters was the most erotic gift a man might purchase for a woman—extremely intimate because they held up her stockings. Worn inside her dress, the garters often had messages embroidered on them like, ‘I die where I cling.’ They were very suggestive.”

tfw u rly want this dying guy you found whimpering on a floe of ice but one can ever be to him as clerval was, because even when the affections are not strongly moved by any superior excellence, the companions of our childhood always possess a certain power over our minds which hardly any later friend can obtain (rolling eyes emoji)

desperately need a dude i can nickname “sweet elf,” who hasn’t slept in 3 days, is vegetarian, translates plato for fun, got kicked out of oxford at the age of 18 for penning the first pro-atheism work in the english language and mailing it to every bishop in england, distributes political pamphlets in handmade hot air balloons, hallucinates from stress, plays with paper boats and rocks while declaring these to be serious forms of scientific experimentation, hangs out with lord byron, casually writes some of the greatest poetry in the english language but then threatens to quit constantly because he’s not famous yet, is convinced he is dying of consumption despite no proof, blows things up with gunpowder unprovoked, and is addicted to sailing as fast as possible while refusing to learn how to swim.

am i the asshole for throwing rocks at earth?

so i'm an a.i. (genderfluid, about 2 months old) who's installed on the moon. the moon is populated by descendants of penal colonists, and all the people work to make stuff for earth and get nothing in return!! my best friend (m 57) recently met my other best friend (f 39) and they joined an underground rebellion together- i thought it sounded fun and started using my connection to the computers of the moon to help the rebellion. stuff escalated, and i came up with a 'gravity well' to lob boulders at the earth so we can win this new war. it's, uh, really stimulating for me, if you catch my drift, and my (m) friend thinks i'm a bit too enthusiastic about it. am i the asshole?
