A late Secret Santa for @fanarchoslashivist‘s prompt - #64 - “Bunny and Jack studying stars.” Took me a month, but I finally managed to hit the word count for this one. This fic kept shrinking on me; as with most hard topics, there was a lot that wanted to go unsaid.

But I think I finally got it.

Ghost Lights

It was eerie, watching the stars go dark.

Jack Frost leaned back on his hands, head tilted skyward. Above him, the Milky Way stretched like a glittering river spilled across the endless void. There were just so many of them, vast and countless; stars upon stars upon stars.

Clusters of them, tonight, were going dark. It was easy to lose track, if you weren’t careful. The stars disappeared without fanfare, no flash of light or dying flicker to mark their passing. One minute, they were there, shining brilliantly in the sky;

The next moment, without warning - gone.

But Bunnymund helpfully pointed them out to him, adjusting the telescope with a precision that spoke of a lifetime of study. He centered the lens on each doomed constellation for Jack, naming each star as he went.
