Reblog cause I wish I met this wonderful man

In 1970, my mother's family adopted an intellectually disabled man named Horace. Horace was 56, and had been in an institution since 1921.

My uncle, who was 19, was working as an orderly at the institution where Horace lived. He only stayed a few months as the abuse he witnessed was too much for him. He had become friends with Horace and told him "I'll come back for you."

Horace replied "They all say that."

By that Christmas, Horace lived with my uncle and his family. My grandparents did the official adoption. Horace had never seen a Christmas tree, and that was his first real Christmas.

Horace died in 2010, at the age of 96. He laid down for a nap and just slipped away.

At least two generations of children grew up with him. He felt immortal to us. He loved Hot Wheels, pizza, cartoons and to talk to the portrait of my grandparents as he sat in his rocking chair.

He knew everyone's birthday. He loved unconditionally.

He had scars on his back from the institutions. If you asked him about that place, his face would screw up and he'd say "oh, it was a bad place. Bad place."

And for 40 years, he was safe, loved, and happy. He loved us in return.

No point to sharing this. But I still miss his laugh as he held a conversation with a portrait, whispering about his day to the people who had helped rescue him.

Honestly same, but this idea is as golden as menaleas' treasure

what if. spartans who don't like how smooth their skin is. who when out of their suits are disturbed by how smooth their skin is. the texture of the bodysuit that holds the gel layer is textured and that feels better.

all the injuries. all the hits they've taken. the pain they've endured. yet no scars to show for it. it feels wrong. their skin is far too smooth.

in a way, yes, their armor is their uniform. a second skin. but it's also what protects them - not entirely physically - but also mentally. when their body isn't as mangled as it seems to be, the ridges and grooves and texture of their armor and the bodysuit makes their bodies seem a little more accurate to how they feel they should be.

The thread that ties us together was spun by the mice on Venus, for they are the higher life form

“Where does it come from, the thread that ties us together? Who spun it? What is it composed of, what is its matter? I have half a mind to unpick myself, to find the source; but I won’t.”

MORE WORLDBUILDING, this time on a holiday that i came up with

Diviti week- TLDR: celebrates Merudi as the patron god of the Ojalana empire, but isn’t celebrated outside of it.

Diviti Week is a well-known holiday sponsored by the Ojalana Empire, though it is not widely celebrated outside of it. It takes place from Merudi 1st to Merudi 7th. The holiday is a celebration of the god of wealth Merudi, and is marked by a life of affluence. People show off their wealth, sales boom, profits are made, and debts are paid off. People wear their best clothes and host parties and feasts in celebration.

While this may seem like a holiday that only the wealthy and powerful enjoy, the lower classes are still in full support of the holiday. Local merchants consistently lower their prices during this week, especially at the end. The holiday attracts no small number of tourists that flock to the capital to partake in the festivities and watch the city become more beautiful than anything they have ever seen. Every street is hung with string lights that can best be described as icicles of pure gold that reach down to touch the heads of the pedestrians on the streets. There are ropes of braided silk draped in every alley, lighting the stony streets on fire. Exotic flowers are shipped from faraway lands and placed in the central plaza of Jackal Quartz, where one of the centerpieces of Diviti Week is held.

On the 4th-6th day of Diviti Week a massive 24 hour market is held, featuring everyone from farmers to furniture makers, menageries of all kinds, and spectacular dressmakers. Merchants of all kinds flood to Jackal Quartz during this week to sell their wares, most of them coming from Kelly's Caravan that makes its second arrival at this time, the other time being the 1st of Grecis.

The second centerpiece of Diviti Week is the massive palace ball, called the golden ball, that is held on the last night of Diviti Week. It is held in the grand hall of the Palace, and it is completely public. Everyone, from the nobility to the commoners walk in through the massive doors of the palace to behold splendor beyond imagination. The roof is hung with gold and silver candles suspended by chains that fit perfectly into the space not taken up by the second floor balcony. The sconces that are drilled into the Carmine Red walls are hung with garlands of resplendent diamonds and topaz. The intricate swirls on the banister are interwoven with roses, lilies, tulips and snapdragons in every imaginable shade of orange and yellow. The marble tile of the floor is polished to a shine that reflects the feet and clothes of the various dancers
