Last days of the uprising. The greatest and the most despicable all leaps for freedom. He swore he voted against it and yet his honour did not let him abandon the men and women he had fought for for the last five years… and of course he joined the fights. How could he not? It was his duty. Somehow, on those chilly September days he found himself reminiscing about his life and his choices. The good and the bad, the ones he regretted and the ones he had found joy in. Just an old man reflecting on his decisions even though they did not matter in the larger perspective. In the end it all led to one September day. When t h a t  d a y came, paradoxically, he was and he was not ready. And yet, without a second thought he led his men through the flames into the bunker, as the sky fell on him. A single foolish Pole for whom the world had truly ended.

Why did Viktor cut his hair?

Viktor had long hair in the past, well he must have just cut it because it was getting too long. But that isn’t the case, I feel. First, we’ve not been shown much of Viktor’s past and the only people he’s ever been close with were Yakov and his dog Maccachin. The others were either just his rivals or super fans. In the recent competitions that he’s won, it’s clear to see a grimace on his face. He wasn’t pleased to win. (Please read this amazing post that talks about Viktor’s past. Then my post might start making a little sense)

I guess he wasn’t pleased with himself for a long time now. He was gay and I feel he wasn’t accepted for being gay. Maybe he wanted to surprise everyone by cutting his hair to show he’s fine with being the “masculine” gay? Or maybe just to surprise people by showing he isn’t actually gay? But that might have not been what he really wanted (to show people he isn’t interested in guys) and he was losing inspiration since all the people in his life were only either rivals or fans and they weren’t getting surprised anymore. We all can safely say Viktor likes to be rebellious. Cutting his hair might be an act of “rebellion”. He also might have wanted to find something to inspire him. Something that can make his life more consistent. Come on now, he’s already a 27 year old man. Of course he’s super into his job of figure skating but that too was losing its charm. He wanted to get inspired by finding love; finding someone that wouldn’t stop being surprised by him and he didn’t want to change the way he wanted to find love. He’d find a man, then find inspiration and consistency in life. So Yuri was on his mind as a potential someone in future. Yuri is clearly not just a rival or a fan since he didn’t use the chance of clicking a picture with Viktor. He didn’t issue any challenges to Viktor; clearly not a rival. In fact Yuri always wanted to follow Viktor and looked upon him only as a role model. Sure he was a fan but not the typical one. A “fan” that wanted to surpass Viktor. Viktor clearly saw potential in Yuri’s skating and personality. Hence, I feel he set out on a journey to essentially find “love” which will be his inspiration. Because isn’t it already obvious? Viktor has always been way too “affectionate” towards Yuri, since the first day he arrived to be Yuri’s coach.

Sure he kissed Yakov’s cheek but it was a cheek and Yakov is almost 70 years old or something. He’s straight too. We can see that Yakov was dating the Prima Ballerina and also got married to her at some point in his life. Well yeah, Viktor is a playboy for sure, charming everyone with his looks and personality but never dating anyone, actually. Even in the episode in which Viktor says “let’s talk about me. My first lover was..” his countenance when was talking about his first lover was of “doubt” “can’t remember” or something of that sort.

Also note that Viktor said “koibito” which is a word for “lovers” suggesting that Viktor has been gay for a long time. The English subtitles say “girlfriend” which is wrong translation. If you still don’t believe me, watch the English dub. There is a more precise translation in which Viktor says “lovers” not “girlfriend”. I also want to point out to when Viktor asked Yuri “what do you want me to be to you?”.

If Viktor actually did go to Japan just to be Yuri’s coach obviously he didn’t have to ask Yuri that question–-he’ll be his coach (no brainer). The fact that he did is because he wanted to know if Yuri would like to be more than “friends or brothers”.

And also the fact that Viktor just casually assumes Yuri’s answer would be “be my boyfriend” and says “your boyfriend, I guess. I’ll do my best”, suggests that Viktor has already planned to be his lover but he is considerate enough to know what Yuri would want from him first. Well, I digress but what I want to say is Viktor cut his hair to surprise people, be a little rebellious and pursue something new in life: to find love (in a way he wants to find it) a.k.a his inspiration. And if you noticed, Viktor is letting his hair grow back again because he found his inspiration. He found a place where he can be himself. He doesn’t have to surprise his rivals or fans anymore by changing himself since right now Viktor focuses on shocking everyone by making Yuri win the Grand Prix and dating him, too. Well, at least, that’s what I feel. Tell me what you all think!

P.S: Talking about hair, this picture shown in the end credits of Yuri on Ice shows Viktor combing Yuri’s hair.

Yeah it’s cute BUT DID YOU KNOW?! that combing someone’s hair in Japan is seen as an intimate act that is only done between lovers? Also hair and a comb have a significant sexual meaning in Japanese culture as stated in the book “Hair: it’s power and meaning in Asian cultures”. Also the fact that the picture was candid–taken by the three sisters–makes it genuine. Genuine love.

So it’s official that Viktor and Yuri have the potential of being lovers. This anime has gay love in it. Beautiful gay love. I’m in love with it, you better be too.
