Palestine - The Land of Sad Oranges

The Jaffa orange holds a lot of symbolism for the Palestinian struggle. This varietal was developed in the 19th century and named for the city Jaffa, where it was first produced for export. It was a major export of the region until the industry declined under British rule and disruption from WWII. Finally the establishment of Israel caused irreparable damage as groves were seized or destroyed by settlers. Israel took over production on seized land but never achieved the same success with the crop, and what remained of Palestine suffered ongoing violence and blockades preventing the industry from further success. The Jaffa orange has remained a symbol of the Palestinian homeland, most notably in Ghassan Khanafani's short story The Land of Sad Oranges.

This orange with a Palestinian flag for a leaf can be found here on shirts, stickers, mugs and more. ALL PROCEEDS from Palestine related sales will go to my Palestinian best friend to help him bring his girlfriend over to America. Any left over will be used to help his other loved ones around the Levant who are being hurt directly and/or financially by the attacks on Gaza, the increasing Israeli raids in the West Bank and the collateral damage in surrounding countries. I've already made something similar to this, it seems like a good design for a sticker. The keffiyeh was a gift from the friend I am fundraising for. He gave it to me back in October while I was trying to comfort him, I have worked photos of it into a lot of my designs.

A woodcut style dove wearing a keffiyeh over a poppy. The official national flower of Palestine as of 2016 actually seems to be the Faqqu’a iris, but many people will tell you that it's the poppy. Regardless of how official it is (often a vague thing when it comes to national symbols anyway) the poppy is an important national emblem for Palestine. It features the four colors of the flag (black, white, red and green) and is also said to represent blood shed on the land. Honestly I see it used a lot more than the iris (though both are lovely plants).

As usual, ALL PROCEEDS from this design are for my Palestinian best friend, to help his girlfriend afford to join him safely in America and to help his friends and family in Palestine and around the rest of the Levant who are being hurt directly and/or financially by the attacks on Gaza, the increasing Israeli raids in the West Bank and the collateral damage in surrounding countries.

I run a fundraising shop where I sell Palestine related designs and all income goes to keeping my best friend's family safe. My friend graciously agreed to model the gym shirt I got him from the shop:

The left is the product mockup, the right is my friend (cropped to protect privacy of course). It's still a little wrinkly from the package here but I think it turned out nicely. The printing is pretty light and thin which I guess is unsurprising for a stretchy exercise shirt, I imagine it will be heavier on the standard clothes. He says it's comfortable and it held up through our workout with no issues.

As always EVERYTHING I EARN from my shop is for my best friend, a Palestinian grad student living in America. We're heartbroken but not surprised that the ceasefire has fallen apart. We'll keep getting what we raise to whoever we can still reach.

I know people get really excited to see Palestine on old maps, because it's proof that it existed long before it was colonized. With this in mind I dug through the Wikipedia on Cartography of Palestine for my next fundraising design. This one is the 1769 Bachiene and Maas version, featuring "Palaestina". I overlayed it on an antique paper graphic to give it this look. I have two versions found here: with and without the flag overlay.
