if this isn’t the science vibe what’s the point?
I can't unsee this
Honestly, knowing things about sewing and clothing construction is sometimes a curse I wish I wasn't suffering from.
So my textile hobby is embroidery. Right now, I am embroidering a shirt as a gift for a friend. For the shirt, I just needed something simple, plain, and pink - so I went to Target, because that was what was available to me, and somewhere I was pretty sure would have what I was looking for. It did, and I got a plain pink t-shirt for a not-bad price.
Here I am, a week later and almost done with my project, when I randomly glance down at the hem and feel my heart sink into my feet.
because what. the Fuck. is This???
This is one of the worst hems I have ever seen on a commercial garment in my entire life. If a single one of those threads gets cut, the whole bottom of the shirt is unraveling faster than the life of a college student who only just now realized their final was supposed to be a semester-long project. This is the kind of thing I would expect to see for someone who had to hand sew the hem, because I've rarely ever seen vertical hemming outside of handmade clothes. And looking at the inside, I was even more confused.
Because the inside looks normal? So what the hell happened to the outside?? This appears to be a vertical hemming stitch with a ladder back, which I have never seen before in my entire life.
Let's look at two other examples for comparison.
First, we have a normal cotton t-shirt from a few years ago:
This is a 2 needle flat lock stitch (6mm), the type of stitch I would expect to see. You might be able to snag the inside thread on something, but it wouldn't unravel the whole thing, and you'd have to take some seam rippers to get at the outside in any meaningful way.
Now let's look at something older:
This is the inside and outside of a vintage 50s top I bought about a year ago. Notice that there's no visible hem on the outside at all. The bottom is folded up into the inside, where one or two other layers of fabric are located in order to stitch it together. There's a row of single-needle lock stitching close to the bottom of the garment, with another single-needle row and a line of overlocked stitching just to top it all off. The only way this could be more secure is if it attended therapy and achieved self-actualization. This hem isn't going anywhere.
So where does this leave us? Well, it personally leaves me very upset about the state of the clothing industry. Yes, these tops all came at various price points, and have different levels of quality accordingly, but consumers should be able to buy clothes that won't immediately fall apart on them should a stiff breeze happed to blow past. If I had the time or the machinery, I would fix the hem myself, but I don't, and I am genuinely upset to have put hours upon hours of work onto a project with such a shitty canvas. And frankly, a little insulted.
Moral of the story: Check your seams people. You'll thank me when tugging on a single thread doesn't get you arrested for public indecency.
Okay let me add my five cents to the Zaunite au, where Viktor didn’t make it to the academy and remained in Zaun.
He was trying to invent on his own, but he desperately needed money for his research. And that’s when Silco appeared…

Last post of the year (had to be Sevika)
Father and son quality time…in the hospital(? I've been thinking about these two making up for lost time and memories.
I just saw a TikTok about how Jayce’s fatal flaw is that he is willing to do anything to help the people he cares about, regardless of the consequences, and I had a thought:
Jayce agreed to destroy the hexcore at Viktor’s request, but at that point his death was still an abstract. When he is faced with Viktor, limp from a snapped spine of the council chamber floor, he barely hesitates in using Hextech.
Because despite the promise he made, despite how it betrays Viktor’s wishes, he loves Viktor too much to let him die while Jayce can do something. And he would rather lose him than lose him.
My princess with a disorder🥹
Also heres the full list of maladies by popular request
I think Jayce would be no.1 Jayce hater

"meljayvik where mel and viktor share jayce" OR THEY'RE ALL IN LOVE, PLEASE. i want them all happy.
Very much the main reason I latched onto them so much, I think
are we going to talk about the fact that jayvik is written in a nearly explicit queerplatonic way versus a romantic way?
or are people not ready for that conversation yet?
i promised you 🦋

something something “the hands that cradled your face and tilted it upwards to kiss your forehead are soaked in unfathomable quantities of blood.” “but they cradle me, yes?”
“Would you fall in love with me again if you knew all I’ve done?”
I made this as if the whole of the Greek god pantheon was chasing me

with arcane’s focus on visual elements, something that’s been nagging on me lately is mel medarda’s final design and why it compounds the tragedy of her story:
firstly, when we see mel in her flashback, she’s already wearing her significant white/gold, but tempered with blue—noticeably missing her mother’s greys and reds, even then, showing her idealogical differences
then in piltover, we see mel as her own self-actualization—all white and gold and black, colors connected to power, and with an elegant cut that still places her slightly apart from piltover fashion. it shows her place as a non-combatant (long skirt) and someone privileged (the pure white) and wealthy (the gold. so much gold.). this is mel medarda at the pinnacle she’s worked so hard to achieve—it’s elegant because she is elegant
which of course becomes subverted when we do see the gold accessories taken away and the white dirtied when she’s kidnapped by the black rose—this is the first and only time we see mel in actual disarray, and it shows how vulnerable she is when she’s outside the political sphere
and after her transformation, we have this costume change, where aside from the increased gold (now representing magical ability instead of just wealth), we have mel in a a skin-tight catsuit style getup, allowing for greater movement, and her hair done in micro-braids in a style that won’t affect her center of gravity. at first, when i was watching, i was confused (especially about the hair), but then i realized—
this isn’t mel dressing herself to reflect a change, this is leblanc’s vision of mel, where power is swiftness and she is markedly different than others in a way that is now impossible to ignore
and she tries to return to her previous sense of self with the white hood, going back to a trademark of her style, but notably this is an outfit worn to conceal, not reveal and show off like her previous iconic dress, and her change is visibly with even just the hood off
and when mel accepts black rose’s help and betrays them and her mother dies, the white hood disappears—try as she might, she cannot go back to who she was, and she stands before noxians as a mage and mother-killer and a wolf, something dangerous
and then, when we see mel leaving piltover, she’s wearing nothing of her original self, but a combination of black rose’s getup and her mother’s colors. there is almost nothing of “mel” in this outfit, as if she’s been subsumed by these two identities—noxian and mage
even her makeup has shifted, with the red line under her eyes and the gold in her lower lip directly copying her mother
this isn’t a mel who’s realized herself in a new identity. this is a mel who, when faced with the enormous loss of her brother, mother, lover and former identity, has fallen into the definitions and roles that were presented to her, and who is now primed to continue the cycles started by her predecessors
and moving on from arcane, i think it would be fascinating to see mel in one of the newer shows to see how she grapples with this and if she either falls back into tradition and dooms herself, or if she’s able to break free and reforge her identity on her own terms
fiddauthor and jayvik are fundamentally very different ships in many ways but "outsider scientist blinded by ambition gets sucked into an unholy machine of his own creation meanwhile his cosmically disturbed boyfriend starts a cult because he can't come to terms with the innate fallibility of his own human mind and body" is a suspiciously specific niche to fall into
Arcane really said ‘transphobes don’t get to enjoy the catgirl’ and I salute them for it

GOD I love Zaunite Viktor. Give that man the Steampunk aesthetic he deserves
Some Zaunite Viktor and academy Jayce
continuation of this
hoverboard design inspired by @duckchaw's firelight viktor post
no one's mentioned how viktor has his cane here even though he's not even standing and it's jayce's hallucination/fantasy
jayce meant it when he said he loves viktor wholly, not excluding his disabilities, and that he thinks viktor's imperfections are beautiful and admirable
viktor's cane, and therefore his disability, is a part of him and not something even jayce's subconscious could cast aside as he was losing his mind. his high opinion and adoring perception of viktor has always included the parts of him that viktor himself views as flawed and shameful
I like to think they were friends once upon a time
There's something so perverse about how Jayce is paraded around in white and red and gold when his House colors are clearly shades of blues and browns.
Especially because the more he is used and controlled by the council as a whole, the more he is plastered about as some figurehead or poster boy of Piltover's progresses, the more he is draped in the gilding of false colors.
We actually never get to see him wearing his own House colors past his flashback with the mage, in which the majority of his little outfit is made up of the more humble color scheme.
The only thing he actually still owns in his house colors is the blanket he gives to Viktor, which can be seen in his childhood room and is made of the same material his mother wore during the blizzard for warmth.
Edit to add:
I'm adding this to the original post so y'all don't assume I just didn't analyze the literal BEST Jayce outfit in the whole series.
It's a mourning shroud.
While the highlights may have some blue to them (blue highlighting is very common in animation to keep things from looking dull or muddy) the midtone on his shirt is actually in the yellow field.
Also, no. The Talis House symbol is not red. It's brown and gold (sometimes with white).
Any red relating to the Talis symbol is BECAUSE of the color corruption of Jayce, not in spite of it.
The outfit still has meaning, but as I said in the post, he NEVER goes back to his family colors after being paraded around in the red, gold, and white.
This outfit is black, red, and silver. His armor is black and gold with an off white coat (to show that he's still doing this in a way for Piltover as well, probably.)
It's and end and new beginning. It's a rebirth.
Not a return.
