Snowdrops
Louise Glück

Do you know what I was, how I lived? You know
what despair is; then
winter should have meaning for you.

I did not expect to survive,
earth suppressing me. I didn't expect
to waken again, to feel
in damp earth my body
able to respond again, remembering
after so long how to open again
in the cold light
of earliest spring--

afraid, yes, but among you again
crying yes risk joy

in the raw wind of the new world.

I will say as a math person there is this weird degree to which it makes me like, angry to read about physics. like it just frustrates me, the way they write. it gets on fucking nerves.

I don't want to cite my references. I want a puppet rat to pop up from the bottom of the screen holding a sign saying "It's True!"

im so fucking stupid someone gave me 9/25 as a probability and i tried to convert it into % form and instead of multiplying 25 and 9 by 4 to get 36/100 or 36% (like my friend did) i realised they were both square numbers then square rooted 9/25 to get 3/5 then translated that to 0.6 or 6/10 then squared that to get 36/100 then converted that to 36%. why did i do any of that. like come on.

I remember once sort of sitting down and thinking, ‘I am terribly depressed and this can not go on…’ and then I thought, ‘Well, you can do two things. You can kill yourself or you can get interested in absolutely everything.’ I read the newspaper every day; I read scientific books and geographical books and historical books and books in other languages, as well as the books that professionally I had to read, and suddenly the world became wonderful.

elf physicist studying proton decay by hanging around for a bit looking at a proton waiting for it to decay

Computers are very simple you see we take the hearts of dead stars and we flatten them into crystal chips and then we etch tiny pathways using concentrated light into the dead star crystal chips and if we etch the pathways just so we can trick the crystals into doing our thinking for us hope this clears things up.

Share my madness, and I will share yours.

"what do I do if I have theories" will always be the fucking funniest reddit post

being cool is when you know algebraic topology and linguistic reconstruction and medieval islamic theology and the poststructuralists and quantum physics and old poetry and queer theory and chinese history and 3+ languages (real knowledge, not wikipedia shit). you can't be cool without learning all of that. but if you do, everyone will agree you're cool and you won't have to work on any of your negative personal qualities

Researchers propose that this planetary nebula was created by two stars that sloughed off material over thousands of years in fits and starts. As the pair closely orbited one another, they may have entered a phase of more violent and highly directed mass ejections.

The Hubble Space Telescope first looked at this planetary nebula in 1998. By comparing the old and new Hubble observations, we can literally see how it changed over time.

What’s special about this image is that the Hubble’s unique ultraviolet capabilities helped reveal how much dust obscures the nebula’s central star, as well as the star’s temperature and age.

ALT TEXT: A nebula with a pink elliptical shell is surrounded by concentric of blue gas, all set on a black star-filled background. A small bright star is in the middle of the nebula. On top of the pink shell are a series of wide, blue, linear structures. Two of them cross, forming a boxy, wide X shape. A third cuts vertically through the center of the X. Superimposed on all of these structures are vein-like filaments of dark red gas, including a thicker red equatorial belt.

Accretion Disk Binary System - December 26th, 1995.

"Our Sun is unusual in that it is alone - most stars occur in multiple or binary systems. In a binary system, the higher mass star will evolve faster and will eventually become a compact object - either a white dwarf star, a neutron star, or black hole. When the lower mass star later evolves into an expansion phase, it may be so close to the compact star that its outer atmosphere actually falls onto it. Such is the case diagrammed above. Here gas from a blue giant star is shown being stripped away into an accretion disk around its compact binary companion. Gas in the accretion disk swirls around, heats up, and eventually falls onto the compact star. Extreme conditions frequently occur on the surface of the compact star as gas falls in, many times causing detectable X-rays, gamma-rays, or even cataclysmic novae explosions. Studying the extreme conditions in these systems tells us about the inner properties of ordinary matter around us."
