Here's a list of great VK public pages in Russian that I adore: pt 1

If you're learning the language, I think these might help you get more familiar with not only reading and spelling, but with how Russians actually communicate. And these pages are pretty cool too, so you can just check them out even if learning the language isn't the main goal.

1. покажи нам кусочек своей жизни/show us a piece of your life

A rather cool page where people share random pictures from their phones with a bit of info about themselves. Every post has its own aesthetic but more importantly, these posts feel very real and authentic. Here's what some of these posts look like.

Did you have a diary when you were a kid? I cringe every time I read my old diaries. But this page collects all the weird diary entries and posts them. Not sure where they take them from, but they're all pretty hilarious.

Improvisation content... What happened?

Hey guys! The Russian Improvisation fandom recieved some bad news and good news in the span of the last 4 months, and I would like to share them with you. They are quite important. First of all, I'm sad to tell you that the original show has been permanently closed. The show has aired for 8 seasons in nearly 7 years.

The reason for the show's closure is NOT its low ratings - Improvisation has been one of the most popular TV shows on the Russian television, and the fanbase keeps growing every day. In short, TNT's management team (the channel Impro was originally aired on) went through some changes, and the new team decided Improvisation had to go (which, in everyone's opinion, makes no sense). Sure, this news is dreadful, but I think the new changes make up for that.

Improvisation changed its name to Improvisators and moved to a different channel called STS and the new episodes started coming out last month! Not only that, but the episodes are now in open access on YouTube! This is great news to all of you who have been asking for the whole 40-minute episodes instead of 5-minute clips that I post here (the videos still aren't subbed though :( ).

I'm very excited to translate a clip from their new show format and I can't wait to show it to you!

Thank you all so much for your patience and have a nice day!

P.S. My friend in Moscow was on the set of their new show and she said she loved the changes. I hope you like it as well!

The LITTLE BIG moment that had me shook

LITTLE BIG music videos are unique and interesting to Russians not only because of all this crazy stuff they always come up with, but also because these guys invite tons of Russian YouTubers to every music video. I might even write a list of people who have been invited so far, if Russian YouTube is interesting to you.

But my favorite cameo happened in their “I’M OK” music video.

The LITTLE BIG Moment That Had Me Shook

You see, the character on the left is Arseniy Popov. He’s one of the actors in Russian TV show “Improvisation” (pretty much the Russian version of “Whose line is it anyway?”). The thing is, there is an inside joke in the show about Arseniy being homosexual.

In the LITTLE BIG's music video Arseniy Popov not only appeared as the first TV celebrity, but the band kept the inside joke that they were clearly aware of.

The LITTLE BIG Moment That Had Me Shook

As a big fan of both “Improvisation” and LITTLE BIG, I was absolutely thrilled.

Just a fun fact #5

There are very, VERY few words that begin with "Й". The only ones that exist (or the ones that are at least used commonly) are:

Йод - iodine

Йогурт - yogurt

Йога - yoga

Йоркшир - yorkshire

Maybe there are more words, but those are the only ones that I know and use on a daily basis.

So I wanted to do something different and translate a scene from the Russian version of Howl’s moving castle! Hope you enjoy the voice acting just as much as I do.  *Бабка, бабки (babka sing., babki plur.) — rude way of saying ‘old woman’.  Бабушка, бабушки (babushka sing., babushki plur.) — neutral/polite way of saying ‘old woman’ or ‘grandmother’. Баба, бабы (baba sing., baby plur.) can refer to a grandma you already know (in this case the grandmas name is usually followed) or a woman (in a rude way). All the nouns are feminine.

Hey guys. Just wanted to say that I'm not going to post for some time. I don't know how long it will last, but I won't be here until summer for sure.

My heart goes out to Ukraine. If you want to help, please donate to the military charities that I posted down below.

Stay safe. And let's hope peace will come again soon.

RUSSIAN TEA VOCAB/ ALL THE NUANCES EXPLAINED

RUSSIAN TEA VOCAB/ ALL THE NUANCES EXPLAINED

ча́й - the drink itself and a product in the store

ча́йная зава́рка or simply зава́рка - dry tea leaves in the packaging

ча́йный паке́тик - teabag

крупнолистово́й чай - whole-leave grade of tea

чаи́нка (the plural form чаи́нки is more common since usually there is more than one of them in your tea) - fannings, wet pieces of tea leaves or tea dust which fell into the tea

де́лать чай - to make tea. The construction is widely used and describes the process of making tea from any tea product i.e. leaves, tea bags.

ста́вить ча́йник - put on a kettle It is not common to say включи́ть чайник

поста́вь ча́йник = поста́вь во́ду - boil some water in kettle (usually for the tea)

я уже́ поста́вила ча́йник, ско́ро бу́дем пи́ть чай - I’ve already put the kettle on, we’ll have tea soon

зава́ривать (чай) - to brew. One of the steps of the process of tea making (usually from whole-leave grades of tea) when tea leaves are poured with hot water and left for a few minutes in the teapot. The process requires time as tea leaves need time to release natural chemicals. When it is happening the Russians say чай зава́ривается, i.e. the tea is being brewed.

зава́ривать ка́шу (to cook kasha) = to cause a situation that brings about troublesome or unpleasant consequences ну и ка́шу же ты завари́л! - what a mess you’ve made!

but! вари́ть ка́шу = to cook kasha

наста́ивать (чай) - to infuse. The idea of the process of настаивание is to wait longer than usual so the taste becomes strong enough. This verb can be used to explain the same process while preparing herbal teas and infusions.

Remember that this verb has two meanings!!! наста́ивать - to insist

подожди́, чай ещё не завари́лся = подожди́, чай ещё не настоя́лся - wait, the tea is not brewed yet

остужа́ть (чай) - to cool the tea down

электри́ческий чайник/электроча́йник - electric kettle

зава́рочный ча́йник - teapot

ча́шка = кру́жка - cup/mug traditionally ча́шка is the elegant cup with a special design, usually a part of a tea set. Кру́жка (mug) usually has a shape of a cylinder and larger than a regular cup. Now the differences are almost forgotten so you can use any word of your choice when you talk about tableware. But! It is always ча́шка/ча́шечка чая - a cup of tea

i’m a native speaker and never realized that until now omfg

In Russian we don’t say “You’re annoying”, instead we have “ты меня бесишь (ty men'a besish)”, which literally means “You’re turning me into a demon” and this is just too #relatable.
