Hey, It’s That Russian Learner Who Sent You An Ask Several Months Ago Saying I Watched Your Clips To

Hey, it’s that Russian learner who sent you an ask several months ago saying I watched your clips to help me. Just wanted to drop by again and say I’m still learning Russian and your videos are still hilarious! I’ve even watched a few bits of Improvisation on my own, and while I haven’t really been able to find anything with good subs, I have been able to practice my listening skills by typing the stuff I didn’t understand into the translator, lol. Thanks for the update, glad these guys are still around. Definitely glad to have discovered you!

You have no idea how happy I am I'm actually crying 😭 So glad to know you're still learning Russian! I'm even more glad to know Improvisation and my blog have been a part of your learning journey. I'm sure you've made a huge progress these past couple months! I hope you continue sticking around and good luck with Russian (๑•ᴗ•๑)

hottest language learning tip

write a diary

literally

just write a diary, it has helped me sooo much and i dare say it has been the most developing thing i’ve done while learning french, nothing else compares

1. you’re exposed to the language daily

2. you quickly see which words are missing from your vocabulary

3. you learn to write about the things you think about a lot

4. learning to actually think in your target language

5. having to look up words and when reading the entry back a couple of days later you can’t even remember which words you didn’t know

6. going back to the earlier entries and seeing all the mistakes and knowing how much better you’ve become

7. when you’ve been writing for a few months and your target language becomes a natural way for expressing yourself

8. when you’ve been writing for a few months and you start seeing the diary writing as a way of self-expression and stressrelief, and the language learning aspect becomes natural and secondary

9. filling out a whole book using only your target language and physically seeing how much you’ve accomplished

About the Russian invasion - how is everyone feeling there? What can we do to help?

Thank you so much for asking!

A little bit of history: it's actually been 8 years since russia first invaded our country. But for the last years it was getting more and more quiet. And now BOOM again

Many people evacuated from the destroyed by war cities in 2014 and some still live there even though they support Ukraine. It's hard to leave your home. So it's emotionally different for everyone. There was a joke that people from Kyiv worry more than people from Eastern Ukraine. Because they have experienced a similar thing in 2014 and now they're more prepared than ever before.

Personally, I'm panicking from time to time, because, yup, it's stressful. Most people don't really speak about the war and evacuation because it's scary. But I feel like everyone's trying to be prepared for the evacuation or fighting. Every night does feel like a last one, after all.

Since the beginning of the war, our people have been giving money to military charity. One of the most famous military charities is "Return alive" (Povernysya zhivim). Many Ukrainians donate here every month. Here is a link for Facebook page of the charity, let me know if it translates to English or if i should make a post with translation:

There is also a charity that helps military. Yana Zinkevych, a Ukrainian politician and a commander of the Hospitallers Medical Battalion, leads this charity. In 2015 she was paralyzed during a mission and since then she has been using a wheelchair. She has personally saved more than 200 soldiers and she's awesome.

https://www.facebook.com/100020149602229/posts/914756185872693/

In her post here she makes a list of needed ammunition and the needed money.

I tried to write about the charities that Ukrainians trust in. They are famous, they have been trusted by people all these years, so as far as I am concerned, they can be trusted.

Here is a post by @everlasting-burnout who provided more links. They seem trustworthy.

It matters now.
All links are from these threads by Ukrainians: https://twitter.com/bluegreymoon/status/1495165689220505606, https://twitter.com/olgatokariu

Thank you so much for reading and I encourage to reblog. Just to remind you, I'm trying to tell about Ukrainian situation as objectively and as truthfully as I can

Memrise is a great resource as it has Memrise courses and user-created courses. These are the official Russian courses if you go through them one by one they amount to approximately 54 hours of content. The thing I like about Memrise is they test you on your pronunciation, and they have lots of videos by Russian native speakers. So it really tests you in all your skills.

Just a fun fact

The word 'очевидец' is a combination of an old Russian noun 'очи' (eyes) and verb 'видеть' (to see). Just like that, the word itself means 'eyewitness'.

It's music time!

This is Nikitata — Полюби меня сильней (Love me more).

Nikitata is a pop singer from Belarus. There are many modern Russian speaking musicians who write their music with the "I want to sound badass" motto. But not Nikitata. In fact, his sweet and innocent style is the thing that made him stand out. Nikitata's work is very well known and loved! Hope you enjoy!

P.S. My previous post got the ammount of love I was not prepared for. Your kindness and support mean the world to me. Thank you so much!

Hey, thank you so much for the feedback on my previous post! I’m so glad you liked it! This time, I translated a scene from ‘Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire’. Random facts: English: gills + weed = gillyweed Russian: жабры (plur., gills) + водоросли (plur., seaweed) = жабросли In Russian, instead of calling You-Know-Who ‘Voldemort’, all the characters in the HP universe call him Волан-де-морт (Volan-de-mort). Yeah, I don’t get it either. Snape’s ‘don’t lie to me’ line has been a huge meme among Russians for years now. Russian Harry Potter YTP was the thing that started it. What movie scene should I translate next? Do you have any suggestions?

Here's another great bit from a Russian TV that I still love with my whole heart. The show "Improvisation" is basically the Russian version of "Whose line is it anyway?". If you want to learn about what the Russian sense of humor is like, this show is a must watch. After watching this video you will remember the word казус (kazus sing., m.) for the rest of your life.

Fun fact: this episode has become iconic and remains a huge meme in the Improvisation fandom (yes, this show has a fandom).

“There Are Certain Things In The Movie That Are Very Russian That Is Difficult For An American Audience

“There are certain things in the movie that are very Russian that is difficult for an American audience to pick up on. Like when [Kirk and Sulu] freefall and I capture them and I say something in Russian….[says Russian phrase]…it means “Oh man!” basically, which is something I ad-libbed. Which goes back to what I was saying. Chekov never speaks Russian in the series, and that was Russian slang. And that that is something I decided to add just for the hell of it, because JJ [Abrams] said ‘throw in some Russian, let’s do it for fun.’ It was just a moment that needed some kind of reaction, and they loved it out there. It is one of those things that Russian people get. I think Russian people are very happy with Chekov because he is one of the few Russian characters in American pop culture history that is not the Red Dawn kind of Russians.” — Anton Yelchin
