QiJiu Nation, How Are We Feeling

QiJiu nation, how are we feeling

honestly qijiu are so crazy like wdym the two highest-ranked peak lords of the cultivation world's largest sect are childhood friends, rags to riches, lovers to enemies, "the one that got away" and they HID IT. FROM ALL THE OTHER PEAK LORDS. FOR DECADES. NOT EVEN A SINGLE PERSON KNEW???

love qijiu bc yqy is the only character as obsessed with shen jiu as i am

I keep brainrotting on the idea of Shen Jiu and Shen Yuan being twins and Shen Yuan’s physical body dying as a child when they were at the Qiu estate, but Shen Jiu, in distress, did something that locked Shen Yuan’s soul to his own body. And Shen Yuan has been body sharing with his brother in the background without control for decades until the qi deviation flipped them.

Yue Qingyuan didn't value his soul like one who possesses their soul does, because his soul belonged to Shen Jiu. In the same way, Shen Jiu swore his life to Yue Qingyuan, and so unlike a man who possesses his life, Shen Jiu did not enjoy it. In the end, neither of them got to keep their life, or soul.

Something about both of them entering Wan Jian's swordhalls for the other, Yue Qingyuan to claim a sword, to put a claim to strength, strength enough to rescue Shen Jiu. Shen Jiu, entering Wan Jian to grasp a physical symbol of what he has carried. The physical bond of his loyalty he cannot abandon, the devotion he cannot sever from himself.

(Something about a sword from Wan Jian tying one to Cang Qiong, so even if Shen Jiu could not belong with Yue Qingyuan, if he belonged to Cang Qiong, and Cang Qiong belonged to Yue Qingyuan...)

Them both bearing the physical symbols of their devotion, loyalty, and desire, affixing those symbols to their waists daily, for years, and in that same day, walking past one another, and feeling only heartache.

Miscommunication is Qijiu’s favorite pastime, you see, because to Shen Jiu, Xuan Su has a bitter meaning: A symbol of how Yue Qingyuan had truly moved past him. How he ascended, abandoning Shen Jiu to a mortal fate, an untouchable immortal cultivator.

Xiu Ya, to Yue Qingyuan. Yue Qi.

A reminder. A symbol of his greatest peace, a monument to his greatest failure. For Shen Jiu could master a sword when Yue Qingyuan could not. Yet, how could Yue Qi not feel comforted by his dearest person’s glorious triumph? To each of them, the other’s sword as a reminder of their greatest pain.

Poetically, PIDW!Shen Qingqiu consuming the shards of Xuan Su. The shards of Xuan Su, Yue Qingyuan’s soul, his broken ascendancy. Shen Jiu consuming that, subsuming it to himself, tying Yue Qingyuan to him, in a way that SVSSS!Shen Jiu did not get a chance to.

It is either the shards of Xuan Su, or a broken red string.

Someone said that Yue Qingyuan is never on time.

To which I thought, and perhaps, this could be true, Shen Jiu is always too early.

Qijiu seems eternally meant to pass each other, never meant to meet.

Shen Jiu, leaving the inferno of Qiu Manor, too early. Yue Qingyuan, finding cold ashes, too late.

Shen Jiu, dying before his time, or at least, his soul departing, too early. Yue Qingyuan, speaking painful truth instead of remonstrating his own folly, too late.

We don’t know what Yue Qingyuan and SVSSS!Shen Jiu’s last words were to each other.

Ashes and tears to go around!

Ten thousand arrows and a broken sword.

tbh i dunno why so many sj apologists are anti-yqy. because like????? he is your mascot. he was the originator. the head honcho of excusing sj's levels of unmitigated villainy. look into my eyes and tell me that qi ge wouldn't blush and kick his feet if he saw xiao jiu commit murder. actually we don't NEED to imagine bc jiumei did just that and yue qi just grabbed his hand and ran, no thoughts head empty. arson? child abuse?? yue qi doesn't care. whatever makes xiao jiu happy <3

Yue "I'm pretty sure I don't even have trauma?" Qingyuan and Shen "I made my trauma my entire personality" Qingqiu are both extremely traumatized.

Shen Jiu's obvious motivation in telling Yue Qi that his legs are broken are to get YQ to fucking leave already before he gets caught, idiot, but I think it also has a parallels to an interesting behavior in children: when a kid is hurt in a way that they don't understand, find hard to articulate, or they know isn't seen as "bad enough" to cause this level of distress, they will sometimes lie and say that something more obvious and readily pitiable has happened to them to get someone else, usually an adult, to care/understand/sympathize. It's a plea for someone to acknowledge that they're suffering.Ā

I feel like part of the reason SJ told YQ that is because he needed some way to convey how much he was suffering. On a surface level, SJ is "just" badly beaten and bruised, something that has probably happened to both SJ and YQ before. But ofc that's not all there is to it: QJL dehumanizes SJ and takes obvious joy in his suffering, treating him like a plaything. It's frightening and disquieting in a way that SJ himself probably minimizes or feels weak for being affected by, so how could he possibly tell Yue Qi? How could he explain how bad his life was going to be under QJL's boot? Just telling YQ he was beaten couldn't convey how hurt and scared he was.Ā

Can't you see he’s in pain, Qi-ge? You can't forget that. You have to hurry.

Qijiu's reunion at the Immortal Alliance Conference could have so easily gone differently. If Yue Qi had had the time to express joy over Shen Jiu's survival, before Shen Jiu got angry at apparently being abandoned for a better life, and before Yue Qi then assumed that the failed rescue was the unforgivable harm rather than the apparent failure to return at all, they might have gotten somewhere.

But, you know, another way things could have gone differently is Yue Qi and Shen Jiu not coming face-to-face and recognizing each other at the same time. It could have been one or the other.

Wu Yanzi presumably can't slip into the conference because he's (not invited and also) a wanted criminal, but he might have been able to send his apprentice in to walk around, with Shen Jiu pretending to be just another random disciple among the crowd. If Shen Jiu had disguised himself to enter the conference early, he could have easily seen Head Disciple of Cang Qiong Mountain Sect Yue Qingyuan in a position of dutiful prominence during some opening speech, without Yue Qi noticing him in return.

The conclusions that Shen Jiu would jump to without any indication Yue Qi even remembers him? Bad. Obviously, the only thing to do there is take furious revenge and completely ruin this Yue Qingyuan's beautiful new life somehow.

Likewise, if Shen Jiu had been wandering around the conference to scope out the valuables, Yue Qi could have seen him through the crowd without being noticed in return. Maybe CQMS's head disciple is better situated making the mingling rounds rather than standing up somewhere with the talking heads. Before Shen Jiu knows what's happening here, he's being accosted in a quiet corner by some young master on the verge of crying on his stolen uniform. He just barely manages not to stab this guy about it.

"Xiao-Jiu, you're alive! I came back for you but I was too late and found that awful place burned to the ground! Nobody knew where you'd gone. You're a disciple of Huan Hua Palace now? I'm so happy for you!" this person says, beaming with ugly joy- wait, is this...? "I'm so sorry that Qi-Ge was so useless."

Shen Jiu barely manages to stumble out of this conversation without passing out. Yue Qi gets dragged away by some Cang Qiong master for some social responsibility, clinging to Shen Jiu's hands and swearing to find him later, and he thinks Shen Jiu is a Huan Hua Palace disciple. What was Shen Jiu supposed to say to that assumption? That he's actually lying scum?!

Shen Jiu now has to survive this conference without Yue Qi finding out the truth and without Wu Yanzi finding out about Yue Qi. Upping the tension of this fic idea: maybe Wu Yanzi does find out that Shen Jiu knows the head disciple of CQMS. (Maybe Wu Yanzi was lurking around the edges in disguise as well. Maybe Wu Yanzi witnesses some later conversation between Qijiu.) Wu Yanzi now wants to use Shen Jiu as an "in" to rob or otherwise harm CQMS.

If Shen Jiu is the one who saw Yue Qi first and jumped to angry conclusions and revenge plans about it, maybe the spiteful Shen Jiu likes the idea of reuniting with Yue Qi just to fuck him over like that. He's going to regret that pretty quickly, though.

Everyone brings up how Shen Yuan is an unreliable narrator, but no one brings up the other unreliable narrator of scum villain:

Shen Jiu: I hate Yue Qingyuan!

Yue Qingyuan: *dies*

Shen Jiu: *loses will to live*

Yue Qingyuan headcanon that I don’t see used often enough? The man has PTSD and dissociates and the main reason he doesn’t tell Shen Jiu why he didn’t return is because he literally can’t get the words out. He chokes every time. I’ve seen this take ONCE (you can find it here) now and it was beautifully written.

if sy's brothers in the modern world are actually yqy and sj i will riot. bc sy has been subjected to their "divorced but never married" and "i will kill for you but i will not tell you that i love you" shtick that he will create spotify playlists for them, lovingly labeled as follows:

- "er-ge when da-ge fucks up again" with the sassiest breakup songs ever. sy def plays it in the car when qijiu has their monthly cold shoulder fights (yqy is tearing up). possibly includes good 4 u, abcdefu, ain't shit

- "da-ge internally" feat. the saddest and most lovesick songs ever. i feel like devil's backbone def fits. can't think much bc i am in class rn

sy and his meimei plays "bad idea right?" every now and then bc they're getting tired of qijiu's shit

As the venerated CEO of CQ and Co., there are very few who don't trust YQY. Some might think he's biased or soft, but no one ever even THINKS to doubt his unwavering integrity.

Which is why no one second guesses his testimony when he frames a completely different person for the murder of QJL. He's all misty-eyed and somber, giving a detailed testimony of the events he witnessed while on the stand.

And SJ (the accused) is frozen. Terrified, really, as he looks up at him. Because YQY walked in on him. He literally caught SJ red-handed, but there is not a trace of anxiety or even guilt on his face as he condemns some other poor soul instead.

The years pass. They don't talk about it. SJ doesn't ask. They get married.

YQY never lies again.

ā€œSVSSS is the silly one out of the three novelsā€, I say and immediately get reminded of the tragedy that is Qijiu and how the happiest ending Yue Qingyuan could get was to live a life full of regrets.

The difference between Shen Jiu and Shen Yuan is not that Shen Yuan would never do the things Shen Jiu does

It's that, fundamentally, Shen Jiu will do anything to protect himself except be honest with himself or others and Shen Yuan will do anything to protect others except be honest with himself or others

In other words to compare bingqiu to qijiu

Shen Jiu will commit great violence because he is sure he's right and Yue Qingyuan will permit it out of guilt despite his personal wishes

Shen Yuan will permit Luo Binghe to commit great violence because he is sure Luo Binghe is right to do so. Luo Binghe will refrain from committing violence out of guilt despite his personal wishes

Luo Binghe outsources his moral compass to Shen Yuan but Shen Yuan is outsourcing his rage and violent urges to Luo Binghe

Shen Yuan is not as far from Shen Jiu as people think

Shen Jiu (I will not degrade myself by explaining what happened) šŸ¤ Yue Qingyuan (I will not degrade you by explaining what happened)

One’s mindset is ā€œI won’t defend myself since I’m unrepentantly evil anywayā€ and the other’s is ā€œI won’t make excuses for myself since I failed you anywayā€

They are made for each other in the worst way possible. I want to grind their heads together; it will not help one bit, since what they need is top-notch therapy/counselling, but wow the urge haunts me

SJ talking mad shit about his husband online but as soon as someone agrees he's like "I'm outside your house rn pull up"

One thing that kinda frustrates me about Shen Jiu fics is that they so often try to sanitize him. Make him nicer/more misunderstood than he actually is.

Like, he was definitely very misunderstood in source material, but he also was straight up a terrible person too, y'know? Both things can be true at once.

The biggest thing is his treatment of Luo Binghe, playing on the idea that it wasn't *as* bad as the characters thought it was. Now, this is just plain wrong cause we know from the extras that SJ gave Binghe the fake cultivation manual with the intent that it would literally explode him. He really wanted to murder that kid, yall. Loony toonz ass villain. Keep this man away from children

And he was definitely a total asshole to all his coworkers, even during disciple days. The other Peak Lords are under no expectation to like him nor tolerate his behavior, especially since they (except Yue Qingyuan) don't know about his backstory (very intentional on SJs part)! SJ very deliberately ostracized himself. His nasty reputation didn't just spring up out of nowhere. He has agency even in other people's opinions of him.

This is particularly notable in his interactions with Liu Qingge. It wasn't "LQG bullies poor SJ and spreads nasty rumors about him." It was a rivalry, a give and take between the both of them. They were both assholes to each other, but clearly, despite the animosity, there was some deeper feeling (SJ being so affected after LQG's murder accusations and then later death). Again, agency is key here.

He's also completely unrepentant until the very end! He will never apologize ever, so no sudden "oh god, what have I done?" heel-turns for him, buddy. If it was that easy, then he wouldn't have gotten human sticked in the first place.

SJ is tragic and sympathetic. SJ is also an awful person and a complete asshole. He's allowed to be both, and both of these sides of him are what makes him an interesting and engaging character.

Edit: holy shit stop interacting with this post everytime I open my notifications I think I’m getting reactions to my more recent shit and instead it’s just this bs. Anyways thanks for 1k notes

this might just be a tiktok issue but every time i see someone say ā€œshen jiu deserved a chance at happiness!ā€ i explode. he had many. his entire life he could’ve made different decisions, he could’ve just not abused lbh, or spoken to yqy, but he never did. that’s his whole thing. he’s even aware of it, it’s like his WHOLE final speech in the extras. he would NEVER EVER take a chance at being better/happy, he’s far too comfortable in his own misery, he has absolutely no idea what to do without it. and he doesn’t want to find out either. THATS THE WHOLE POINT. it’s what makes him such a good character, because he’s realistic in his principles. he doesn’t just hate the antagonist, he hates literally fucking everything and everyone, especially himself. makes me scream idk lmao
