It was quiet. The Sherman ranch often was, but that didn’t make Slim any less uncomfortable. He frowned and reached for the half-drunk glass of lemonade on the table, sipped at it idly, and stared at the empty yard outside the window.
Andy had gone into Laramie with Jonesy, both of them excited at the prospect of speaking to someone other than Slim for the day. He’d been in a sour mood for the past thirty four days, snappish and brooding, not wanting to talk or act friendly towards his family. He knew why and that just made it worse. He knew why and it made him want to saddle his horse and ride off into the wilderness to forget.
