Twin Deaths (cotl au comic)

“Come on, I have my knives, you have your magic and we both have claws. We have weapons and we have a will! All we need is a goal!” Ba’al said putting a hand on their waist. Their brothers face was flat in a way that made Ba’al a little more desperate to convince him. They thought for a while before a sly smile found their way on their face. Slowly, with drawn out words they said, “And since we’re very much alive, why not travel? Or-”

“Travel?”

Ba’al immediately straightened their posture upon seeing his brother's ears twitch and his eyes light up at the notion. “Yes, that’s what I said.” They hummed, swaying lightly.

Aym spoke slowly with hesitation in his voice. “We..could travel. And if we travel..” Aym looked over at Ba’al to see the sweet smile they bore but Aym could see the smugness in their eyes. “We could find Mom. And if we find Mom we could…hang out. I would like that.” Ba’al’s smile softened and turned into something more genuine. “We could. She’d be so happy to see us- I’m sure she’d make us some of her homemade cookies. You loved those.”

The Sun twin breathed out a chuckle and rocked on their heels. Aym had nodded, fiddling with his cloak ends as he looked away from Ba’als gaze. The thought of a Aym as a little kitten devouring their mothers cookies brought a smile to both twins' faces. “So..?” Aym looked back over to his brother. The hanging word in the air did little to warn Aym of what Ba’al was trying to say. “Are we going?” Oh. The moon twin felt his face flush and mumbled something to his himself. Quickly and with practiced handwork, Aym straighted himself, flapping out his cloak and taking a stronger stance.

“Yes we shall go.” Ba’al mentally leaped up in the air and bounced on their feet. Grabbing their brothers hand they far too quickly rushed over to the trees and unfortunately caused the duo to trip. “Ba’al wait we- oaf!” Aym groaned at their siblings reckless behavior and looked over to see if they were alright. Thankfully they had sustained no injuries nor did they look any less excited (unfortunately). “What did you even trip over?” The question sounded more accusatory then what it meant but Ba’al very happily grabbed a bush off the ground and put it in his lap, ignoring Aym altogether.

“You haven’t met my new friend yet have you?” Ba’al asked, patting the bunch of leaves like it was some sort of pet. It took Aym several minutes to respond. “Have..Did you lose your head in that fall? We havent even been alive for an hour and youre already going off the rock-”

A chaser worm.

There was a chaser worm in Ba’als lap. It stared at Aym while slowly finding a comfortable spot in Ba’als lap. The bushy earthworm started to chitter and shiver from what Aym presumed to be joy. Blinking from his shock Aym kicked the worm harshly, knocking it away and he pounced only to be pushed down. He wiggled and writhed to look up at his brother with a baffled expression. “What are you doing?! That thing needs to be killed-It is a child of Leshy!”

“It’s okay! Look at him!” Ba’al got up off of Aym and rushed over to the trembling worm. The cat looked over the worm before shoving it in Aym’s face. “This is the friend I was telling you about!” They beamed as brightly as the sun. Aym looked at his twin, stunned even. A looks of disgust came upon Aym as he glared at his brother a little. “I- What the fuck.”

“What? He’s cute.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

“Whatever. We need to talk anyway.”

“About him? He does need a name. What about. Bushy? Wood? Seafoam-”

“No. Something of great importance.... seafoams cute though. Name him Widdle or something.” Aym rolled his eyes when Ba’als retort came along (somethin about how that thing was of great importance) but smiled at Ba’al regaining his joyful behavior. “Look. We need to focus-”

“What about Bumble?”

“Bumble? It is no bee. It is a bushy earthworm. A name of simplicity that reminds one of the forest would be better for it. Something like Sage. Or Briar.”

“Or Shrubby. Simple and woodland, just like you said.” The audacity one must have. For Ba’al to say such a thing- surely they’d know of the shake Aym felt in his core. Such a basic name- like a child! Sure it hit the qualifications he had set but Shrubby? Instead of calling out their siblings' lack of creativity he instead huffed and changed the topic.

“We will travel but there are more important things we need to do. Such as you promise that you will travel with me to all the lands.” He looked pointedly at his twin to make sure the older was paying attention. He was if his ears being pointed towards him meant anything. “And we need to find Him first.”

Ba’al reacted in the usual way they did whenever He was brought up into a topic. They froze for a second, tail twitched and eyes narrowed. But they did not speak a word. No, instead, he stayed looking at the worm in his arms but his tail was still and his ears were slanted somewhat. In fact Ba’al didn't gie Aym any other indication that they were listenitng other then the tells. His attention was seemingly on that filthy little worm that dozed off in his arms. Aym waited with growing impatience, his twins words.

Ba’al turned locking eyes with Aym. “To find him, we need to find others. Neither of us know where we are exactly or where to look, so, find the person we know who can help us.”

It’s Bon Bon and his twin, Bonnet! These two hand puppet clowns were very fun to draw and as well proving quite the challenge. Instead of just plain red cheeks, I gave them swirls so they’d have a more fun look. I didn’t know if I wanted to give them springs or not but I instead went with a wheel. Maybe a spring would’ve been better? Made a more dynamic design? Who knows but they’re finished!

If I ever color these two I’d make their faces white, noses and cheek swirls red and freckles pink.

I am Heba Al-Dahdouh. I currently live in the completely destroyed city of Gaza. Since the war on Gaza began on 7/1/2024, my family- my father Nasif, my mother Asmaa, and my siblings Khaled, Ahmad, Muhammad, and Malak-have been living in constant fear, crying, and suffering due to shrapnel, shells, and bullets.

We have no food, no electricity, no cooking gas, no schools, no homes, no cleaning supplies, and no clothes. Our house was completely destroyed. My school has been bombed, and my brother Khaled's university is now rubble, depriving us all of education. The war has forced us to live in displacement centers, which are just tents unsuitable for living, especially in winter.

Every day we live death, terror, and panic a thousand times because of the ongoing bombardment of my city. The war has killed more than 50 of my relatives and neighbors. At the start of the war, we sought refuge at my aunt's house, but it too became rubble. Imagine: we have survived imminent death more than 20 times and have been displaced among shelters more than 13 times. My siblings and I have suffered from many illnesses due to malnutrition, and we need medication continuously.

Ya know I didn't use to like valentines day, cause it felt like I had to conform to society's standards and find someone to love if I didn't want to. Like, I remember the kids in my class asking me if I had a crush even though we were basically 9. I didn't get it, so I would always say 'no one' or point to the most random person and hope they didn't say anything. Thankfully, they usually didn't and ran off. Nowadays though, I'm really happy when valentines day rolls around cause that means lots of chocolate In the store! And the next day it's all discount so I can get some for me, my siblings and my friends! It's great! Anyway, hope you enjoy the drawing. Maybe ill make a colored version for him.

Baal is the older twin by 20 minutes 

The more distant twin in terms of getting to know others

Uses humor as a coping mechanism when stressed

Baal loves and adores his brother more than anything, but will mess with him to hell and back, much to his twins annoyance

Back in the afterlife, Baal didn't really like Narinder and now that hes been resurrected there is a lot of underlying anger, hate and spite

Made sure Aym didnt fall for a lot of the really bad lies 

Only hangs around him due to the feeling of obligation and Aym

Despite him being the oldest and colder twin, Baal is a hell of a lot more chaotic and as a result more rebellious than his twin. He can and will bother several people in one day and link them all together to cause the most dramatic shit for no reason

On a good day hes mischievous and funny little goofball, who'd you have to stop from being a little thieving shit. 

Him and Aym are pretty acrobatic

The physically stronger twin

Caused the cut on Ayms eye, still feels a little guilty on the really bad days

Really good at social cues and communicating

After being resurrected, he convinced Aym to run away and explore with him, and find their mother. They stay a short walk away from her now

The camillia he wore started dying a bit after being brought back. It crushed him

He ended up planting a lot of camillia around their house, that he took from the lambs cult

Aym loves his brother but wishes he wasn't such an annoying shit a times

Aym has a more positive opinion of Narinder than his brother but does still feel the same anger and hate

Narinder caused the cut on his ear and manipulated him the most

Understands his brother's hatred for Narinder and does not show any animosity toward that fact 

still obeys Narinder to a degree even if he doesn't feel okay doing it

Not nearly as chaotic as Baal but chaotic enough. Unlike his brother, Aym is more subtle and chaotic. Sleeping in wild positions moving things around and causing a bit of a panic

On a good day, he's a little arsonist. He will burn everything

Can't cook for shit

He and Baal are pretty acrobatic 

The stronger twin in regards to magic

Forgives Baal for cutting his eye whenever he apologizes. Baal shouldn't have to feel guilty about an accident that happened 12 years ago

Took a bit of convincing due to fear and feelings of obligation, but ran away with Baal from Narinder to explore and find their mother. Has nightmares of him finding them

A Crash Course to Kendrick's Super Bowl Performance, from a Black Woman

Note: this does NOT go in depth into all of the song's lyrics. I don't have time to recount two decades of his discography. This is just a summary of the performance itself.

Let's start with the first visual we get:

UNCLE SAM - most notably recognized from WWII American wartime propaganda, Uncle Sam is the personification of American patriotism and freedom. The term "uncle" is also evocative of Uncle Tom from Uncle Tom's Cabin, an abolitionist book that aided in inciting the Civil War. Uncle is also a very common term (both endearment and derogatory) towards Black men (eg. "unc"). Samuel L Jackson was fantastic.

Uncle Sam also resembles a circus ringleader, notable for my next point:

THE GREAT AMERICAN GAME - no, not Super Bowl. The GAG is us the people being pitted against each other: through late-stage capitalism, through the culture war, through class warfare, through being built of the backs of slaves. We are all players in the GAG because none of us on this site were the oligarchs seated at the inauguration.

This is also seen as Kendrick's stage was a Play Station controller. Not only did it remind of circus rings visually, but it was a game battle stage. The Great American Game is a battle royale of the commoners for the amusement of the rich whites.

Remember the foods / Them color was tin and brown / But now they 100 and blue - For this I'll just say, look what the last election said about lowering the price of eggs... and look at the prices now.

The revolution about to be televised / You picked the right time / But the wrong guy - Election 2024 once more. *Edit to add, the first part of this lyric is in reference to the Black Liberation Song "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" by Gil Scott-Heron. Thanks to everyone who mentioned that.

THE FLAG DANCERS - yes, the dancers formed the US flag... off of the backs of Black people. Not a single white person in sight, and that's true of the cotton pickers in the fields. Plantations are part of how the US came to economic prominence after being a "backwater" colony. Remember tobacco? Cotton? Our bloodlines do. *Edit to add: they also all piled out of a clown car. The US flag in a clown car? Brilliant.

The red and blue dancers are also notable for representing the Crips and Bloods, two infamous street gangs. The dance in Not Like Us is the Crip Walk. I recommend researching more on your own time about them, but just know they are a large part of the stereotype of Black people being "ghetto."

TOO LOUD, TOO RECKLESS, TOO GHETTO. Do you really know how to play the game? - This is exactly what Black people, especially Black men, get told all the time. It's why we change our names on resumes if they sound "too Black." It's why we codeswitch in non-Black company. This is especially rich considering how non-Black people love our culture and love to make money off of us, as the latter part of the quote points to. And it's even more profound during the Super Bowl-- the NFL is majority Black players.

STREET LIGHT A CAPELLA -- "thug" stereotype dancers to counteract the a capella connotations, with Uncle Sam then saying that Kendrick figured out "bringing other street guys around being a culture cheat code." Yes, this is a direct hit at Drake (listen to "Not Like Us") but also politically. Look up "model minority". Notably I would point to Candace Owens, or the Miami Venezuelan political group that's been in the news recently, especially as this directly led to Kendrick being surrounded by...

DANCERS IN WHITE -- it's white America. That's... that's the allegory.

NOT LIKE US TEASER -- Kendrick says "Not Like Us" is "their favorite song." -> he means white people specifically here. It comes after he's surrounded by all white dancers, the women around him who are his call and response are also in white (my opinion, they represent the industry). He's saying "Not Like Us" is the favorite of yts because it is about BLACK MEN FIGHTING. This again is reflected in the video game stage and ringleader Uncle Sam.

SZA -- instead of giving what they want, we see SZA. She's one of Drake's exes and Kendrick has always supported her.

ALL THE STARS -- This was in the first Black Panther movie, which I recommend you watch. Rest in Power Chadwick. Notably, this movie was incredibly mainstream as a major Marvel movie, and then we have Uncle Sam say...

"THAT'S WHAT AMERICA WANTS: NICE AND CALM. DON'T MESS THIS UP" -- translation: Marvel (the industry, America, etc.) wanted a safe, semi-pop song because white American likes safe pop songs, not Kendrick's usual heavy rap style about his life as a Black man! Don't mess up what you've got going mainstream for having this "Black rap feud" with Drake, who is an R&B model minority to white people because he's safe.

So what does Kendrick say?

IT'S A CULTURAL DIVIDE / IMMA GET IT ON THE FLOOR -- He was warned not to be political or apologetically Black for this Super Bowl performance, but he is using this big stage opportunity to speak out.

40 ACRES AND A MULE / THIS IS BIGGER THAN THE MUSIC -- 40 acres and a mule are what the freed slaves were promised. Instead, this land went to white sharecroppers. Research Jim Crow laws.

THEY TRIED TO RIG THE GAME / BUT YOU CAN'T FAKE INFLUENCE -- rig the election, rig the industry like with model minority Drake, rig the Great American Game with culture war to distract from active class warfare.

NOT LIKE US -- the only thing I'll mention because it made me holler is Serena Williams crip walking on Drake's metaphorical grave. She's another one of his exes.

TURN THE TV OFF -- exactly like he said! The TV is a distraction, the Super Bowl is a distraction, the mainstream news is often a distraction. Turn it off and get with your people!

GAME OVER — could not see this on my stream but at the end of the performance, the lights in the stadium spelled this out. The world is watching, America…
