The Hermitcraft tarot card deck I did a few months ago! I am really proud of these so I’ve decided these are gonna be the first ones to make it into tumblr :D

All twelve rulers of the Empires SMP! One 2-hr painting a day for twelve consecutive days—this was a really fantastic exercise and it was a nice way to relax and take my mind off things while I’m sick with Covid. Thank you to everyone who followed along as I progressed! It’s unfortunate that being sick prevented me from being able to take commissions this winter but I’m glad I was able to do these, if I go too long without painting I get all itchy inside 😅

Some take-aways from doing this series:

- I love painting faces! I feel like this is apparent, but worth mentioning.

- I’m very bi. I feel like this is also apparent, but also worth mentioning ;)

- Speaking of, Empires has a really fantastic gender balance!! This makes me very happy.

- The number of highlights that are visible in the eyes really affects how you interpret the characters’ personalities. I plan to speak more on this later :3

- There are only so many different angles of 3/4 view faces and I think I might have found them all

- While getting Covid is really awful on my body, it turns out to be amazing for my tumblr activity statistics. Silver linings!

bonus: (some things just never change)

Have your party of barbarians, bards, and rogues go to a royal banquet on a diplomatic mission and then have them roll to figure out what utensils to use for each meal of the 9 course dinner. The court is watching, and success hangs on their approval or disapproval :)

Implement rhythm game mechanics! Enemies have patterns that need to be learned and exploited, bosses need to be defeated before their song ends, and every player has to take their turn to the beat!

When the players arrive, apologize and say you’ve changed the game last minute. Instead of roleplaying mighty wizards or space explorers, we’re all pretending to be people who love and care about the GM. Then sob uncontrollably for the rest of the evening.

Rolling to seduce NPCs? Done to death. Rolling to seduce the GM? Submitted lots. Go the next step. Leave the game, drive to the companies headquarters, and roll to seduce the game designers.

I’m rereading bokuto chapters bc I’m in love or whatever and I just, I love that bokuto is the 4th best in the country and a third year but he’s still super friendly and has absolutely no concept of social hierarchy… equally obnoxious to everyone, asks random first year strangers from other teams to practice with him, constantly seeks approval from his one underclassman, wears a 4 instead of a 1 even though he’s captain AND ace, borrows money from his manager and apparently doesn’t even reliably pay her back wtf, has a second year vice captain and is the only captain in the series who does?!, class 1 meathead jock whose closest friends are akaashi and kuroo class 5 responsible smarty pants, and he also manages to woo tsukishima who is a class 4 surly unfriendly smarty pants why is bokuto so powerful?

and I just love this moment idky? he’s energized and ready to say something!! but he still stops and corrects himself to address tsukishima properly bc he’s just… a good soul…

Another commissioned work! this time for a necromancer! 

I think the best piece of character design advice I ever received was actually from a band leadership camp I attended in june of 2017. 

the speaker there gave lots of advice for leaders—obviously, it was a leadership camp—but his saying about personality flaws struck me as useful for writers too. 

he said to us all “your curses are your blessings and your blessings are your curses” and went on to explain how because he was such a great speaker, it made him a terrible listener. he could give speeches for hours on end and inspire thousands of people, but as soon as someone wanted to talk to him one on one or vent to him, he struggled with it. 

he had us write down our greatest weakness and relate it to our biggest strength (mine being that I am far too emotional, but I’m gentle with others because I can understand their emotions), and the whole time people are sharing theirs, my mind was running wild with all my characters and their flaws.

previously, I had added flaws as an after thought, as in “this character seems too perfect. how can I make them not-like-that?” but that’s not how people or personalities work. for every human alive, their flaws and their strengths are directly related to each other. you can’t have one without the other.

is your character strong-willed? that can easily turn into stubbornness. is your character compassionate? maybe they give too many chances. are they loyal? then they’ll destroy the world for the people they love.

it works the other way around too: maybe your villain only hates the protagonist’s people because they love their own and just have a twisted sense of how to protect them. maybe your antagonist is arrogant, but they’ll be confident in everything they do.

tl;dr “your curses are your blessings, and your blessings are your curses” there is no such thing as a character flaw, just a strength that has been stretched too far.
