Yessssssssss
It's all in the eyes apparently
Credits to @eggzumii for sharing the ideas and helping me sort out some thoughts on these
More than loving these dorks for choosing to be heroic and protective and using their (arguably dark and sinister) powers to help people, and that's talking about aside from their obviously hotter atler egos, what I think I love about all of them is the idea of these (part) humans having almost no idea about their powers and abilites and just how far their potential could go and them being seemingly having no control of their powers at first but when they become extremely emotional, usually when they are extremely pissed off, do they seemingly manage to tap into that power effortlessly.
There are a lot more things that I wanna say about these characters but I think what I love the most is this undeniable sign that despite them valuing mundane human problems, all of them are more (sinister) than they seem.
This is a trope. Is it a mainstream trope, I cannot honestly tell but it's a trope that I'm a sucker for.
It's just a different effect when they (Rikuo, Ichigo, and Danny) manage to tap into their powers while still in their human form. It's a signal, a flare, that warns anyone to not mess with them cause they're holding something back whatever it might be.
It's also because (at least with Danny and Rikuo's case, can't completely say the same thing for Ichigo but he still counts) they value their secret to the point that it can be both ridiculous and dramatic and the fact that despite them doing everything to hide it, they just don't give a damn anymore at that moment. They don't give a damn if someone notices, they feel very emotional and instinct is kicking in and the adrenaline's pumping and nothjng else matters anymore.
These characters hide behind a facade (the loser, the delinquent, and the pleaser) and despite the idea that it's in their very foundation to protect their loved ones, it doesn't change the fact that they're all still very capable of hurting others.
It's a whole other thing if they want to hurt someone.
And it has a different effect from their alter-egos.
We expect them to kick-ass in their alter-egos. This is something natural to that side of them. It's the side that allows all of them to vent out their frustrations and just be heroic and maybe be a little bit impulsive cause what the hell do they have to lose?
But the human side. The human side is usually the tamed side (more or less especially for Ichigo). The one where they hide away all their emotions and keep their temper in cause they actually have something to lose while they're human.
And so the idea that the side of their alter-egos just leak into the human side, it brings out a kind of chill.
It's the idea that no matter what they are and how they choose to act as humans, the lines sometimes blur between their two sides. And that line is awfully thin. Their alter-egos are just as much as them as their human sides are.
And I'm a sucker for that
It's just a really effective trope that I hope other creators think about cause of the material it endlessly provides.
I love this too much to not honour it with my first reblog 💚

I so wish I could see more of this exact thing!!! It’s so funny to think about and I love watching reactions!
We didn’t get to see much of it, but I’m so into the idea of Rikuo getting to casually act like himself in front of the Kiyo Cross Squad post-manga. All those times he sneakily shooed youkai away when they were on outings but now he’s just whacking little spirits in the face with the sheathed sword he produced from his backpack as a human and berating them to behave themselves in Nura family territory in front of his whole nonplussed paranormal club. The face journeys the first time they see him cuss a monster out and hit it with a sandal.
