Phoenix is bitter and jaded from being tricked by Kristoph in between the events of PMD1 and PMD2 and he's slowly learning to trust again but he's kind of a jerk to Apollo and the two go on a solo mission so they can talk about stuff and Phoenix winds up evolving in order to rescue Apollo from danger which is a metaphor for him opening up and learning to trust and believe again and uhhh *jazz hands*
