21st of May is Circassian genocide remembrance day, the day of mourning. on the 21st of May 1864 was the last battle between the Russian army and Circassians in Kbaada, nowadays called Krasnaya Polyana (which Russians had turned into a resort). Circassians were killed and deported from Russia to the Ottoman Empire, some tribes were eradicated completely, namely the Ubykhs, the natives of Sochi. every year there is a procession and events dedicated to commemorate the victims in every Circassian republic: in Adygea, Kabardino-Balkaria and Karachay-Circassia.
This year the officials in Nalchik, the capital of Kabardino-Balkaria, banned the procession. I wonder why... :)
