salem did well at adjusting to life in valpo post break up with leon. she had a solid group of friends and routine at home, with stevie, that she'd grown to look forward to and truthfully it was the stability she desperately craved. running into leon in la was completely unexpected and when she learned he was returning as well being back home in valpo had her stomach in knots. they both had a lot to say that couldn't be done over text and salem felt like she was at least owed a conversation about why things ended the way they had between them. after biting the bullet and finally sending leon a text about bringing her food (she had to find a way to break the ice right?) she waited anxiously for his arrival. she heard a knock at her door and couldn't help but smile upon answering when she saw leon standing there not only with the food but her favorite flowers as well. "that was fast." she teased as he proceeded to step inside. salem shut the door behind him and walked into the kitchen. she instantly felt deja vu from it all. "the flowers are nice, thank you by the way." she said nervously while retrieving a vase for the sunflowers. "so, how have things been for you since coming back?"

on his way to valpo, leon had a night layover in la. he went to a bar and bumped into salem there. of course she looked gorgeous, like usual. and after they fucked, the man had to leave in a rush to make his flight. running out of money back home was a huge deal he was dealing with, he couldn't afford another flight. he felt shitty, because he really wanted to talk to salem -explain why he had bolted the way he did- but the craving and addiction was pretty much there still. it never leaves him. it follows him around like a lustful shadow that activates the moment he sees her beautiful brown eyes. that tantalizing smile. and now they're both here. and he's on his way to her place, a place he called a shithole and doesn't even know why. it's not even that bad, maybe he thought he was being funny, but it definitely went all the way left. the uber stops in front of salem's place and leon takes a deep breath. okay. it'll be okay. so much needs to be said. he's nervous with the bag of veggie quesadillas in one hand, and a sunflower bouquet in the other. after thanking the driver, the blond gets out of the car and rings his ex's doorbell. he fidgets in place. after a few moments, the door swings open and he does his best to put on a smile that reads kindness and sorry at the same time. salem beamed as she strolled through the vineyard with solana. she couldn't contain her enthusiasm as the two picked grapes and placed them in the basket. "i'm super excited for this, can you believe i've never done a wine tasting before either?" she said to the other. grape picking and creating your own wine was completely different from salem's typical idea of fun but she was quickly starting to adapt to trying new things while living in valpo. "please don't roast me too hard on how little i know about it all." she said a bit embarrassed. "my parents are more of the whiskey in a dive bar types than wine sipping on a vineyard you know?"

"i need you to be honest with me about two things." salem said while picking up a vintage dress off the clothing rack. she needed advice on what to do with her situation with leon and knew if anyone would be straight forward about it milani would. she was blunt in a way that most people typically weren't with salem and she loved that about her. "first off, should i just say fuck it and completely be done with leon?" the subject made her head spin but she knew if anyone would get her together about it milani being the proud misandrist she is would. "also, if i were on the rebound would this dress be slutty enough to get the attention of a cute girl at club divine?"

salem could understand why he was so angry but she wasn't used to him being this way towards her. it felt weird and uncomfortable and as she sipped on her water she thought about how coming over was a huge mistake. she was probably better off just hanging out at the bar. "it's not that i don't want to be with you it's just-" she paused for a moment and thought about all the things her and her therapist had talked about after ending things with leon. it was apparent she struggled with stability and romantic relationships weren't her strong suit, unfortunately leon was on the receiving end of her issues. "i'm just really fucked up. i don't know how to say it right now. my head is a mess but i don't enjoy hurting you and you've never been the problem." salem shrugged. she hated that she was drunk right now and that things weren't coming out the way she wanted them to. as he got up and grabbed a blanket from the closet she rolled her eyes. sleeping was the last thing on her mind right now. "i don't want to sleep. i just want to talk to you. stop being so mad at me and just fucking talk to me." she replied in frustration while grabbing the blanket from him and placing it next to her on the couch.

"and you know?" leon looks at her as he sits on the armrest of the couch, alluding to if she at least knows what she says to herself. what's going on. he scoffs with a sad smile as he turns his attention to his hands. black chipped nails that he'd painted for the gig that happened several days before. it's crazy. to really think about how he hoped she'd show up. "a week, huh?" leon bites at his lower lip, "what is it? do you not want to be with me? please tell me straight because i can't keep up with the headfucking, salem. i can't." the blond is head over heels in love with the woman that sits a few inches away from him. but she's been hurting him too much and if it's just because she can't break up with him for whatever reason, at least now he's giving her an opportunity to get out. before she absolutely destroys him. he sighs and runs a hand through his curls. "you should sleep." leon stands up from the couch and goes to the closet on the wall. he takes out a blanket and hands it to salem. it won't be much use with the heat of the summer upon them, but he can be nice and care for her still.

“so like….hypothetically speaking if someone wanted one of these cats could they have one?” she asked the person beside her while her gaze was fixed on a larger grey tabby cat. salem being at the cat cafe wouldn’t surprise anyone ( neither would wanting to take in a random stray ) and she knew it would have to be one of the first stops she made as soon as she came back to town. as she crouched down to pet it she wondered how much her own cat would object to a sibling. she seemed to do well with “boat cat” after all. “i mean obviously i would pay for it and ask if i could have it but like can the cats leave with human if they want to?” 

"we've been separated for so long i forgot about how bad of an influence you could be on me, mal." salem smirked while grabbing her bag and rummaging through it before retrieving a flask. as teens the two were a public relations nightmare together but salem always felt like mallory accepted her for exactly who she was. despite salem being so reckless at times when they were younger their friendship ended up surviving the test of time. "i filled this up before i left in case there was only wine at this thing. i hope you still love tequila."

taking a sip from the flask salem passed it over to mallory soon after. "you have a point, i guess this isn't the setting for everyone to be in their feelings but i'll definitely take the private show." salem teased. at the mention of leon's name she smiled for a moment and shrugged slightly. "we've never been described as disgustingly cute, more like a tad dysfunctional but i'll take it." the two had been a lot better lately and salem was trying her best to make sure things stayed that way. "honestly? i really didn't think i could either. i even ended things twice but i guess when you know you know. he's also been super patient through my bullshit." her interest suddenly peaked on mallory's romantic life. "speaking of significant others who's your current victim?"

"Don't tell me you're thinking of tapping out this early. The Salem I know would keep going until we're shitfaced." Mallory answers with a pout. She needed the liquid courage seeing as it was her first performance in months. Truth is, Mal already had a bit to drink before she came to the festival. But a little more alcohol never hurt, right? Reconnecting with Salem after years apart brings a sense of nostalgia and comfort to Mallory. It takes her back to the good memories she had back in then. "Salem, baby," she says, taking a second to down her drink before continuing. "Do you know how difficult it is to choose which songs to perform? I wanted to sing 'Tummy Hurts' and 'Snow Angel' back to back, but then I thought, 'this is too sad for the festival'. I want people to shake their asses and have a good time, y'know?" "But I can give you a private show…but I don't think Leon would like that," Mal adds with a chuckle. "Speaking of, you two are disgustingly cute, you know that? I swear, I could never do that."

꒰  ♡  ꒱ salem west was born and bred in new orleans, louisiana on june 5th 1995 to gwen and thomas west . gwen and tommy met in the mid 90’s, tommy being the frontman of one of the biggest bands in the world "The Aces" and gwen being one of the top supermodels of the 90’s. the two eloped quickly in a small ceremony after only being together for about four months while traveling to vegas and have been together ever since. being the only child of a supermodel and rockstar gave salem the privilege to grow up around music and fashion with a deep appreciation of the two. in 2006 during the golden age of reality tv gwen and tommy signed on for a reality show called "gwen and tommy" which would go on for about 8 years before ending. the show highlighted every part of their lives, including the lows, which forced salem to grow up on tv and under a microscope susceptible to the public's scrutiny. eventually, being on television had a negative effect on her and her insecurities got the best of her which would lead her to struggle with various issues going forward.   ꒰  ♡  ꒱ spending most of her time between new york and new orleans salem didn't really grow up with a stable home life. her parents didn't believe a nanny should raise their daughter so she often traveled with them for work between cities, new york being their main place of residence during the summers. when she got older she became responsible for raising herself and in that time she fell in love with new york. she loved the art, the culture, the freedom--- often finding ways to create her own safe space without the cameras with friends who understood the pressures of growing up with famous relatives. she finished school relatively early due to homeschooling. by the time she was 16 she graduated and spent her free time learning how to play various instruments and attending fashion events with her mom. but the fashion world never really stuck for her.  ꒰  ♡  ꒱ when her 18th birthday rolled around salem started spending more time with her father and his band on tour. she loved the behind the scenes aspect of everything, including being in the studio where she realized she wanted to dabble in singing and song writing. she got into some trouble, flirted with a roadie or two, partied with locals in various cities and even started secretly dating a crew member on the tour. she didn't realize at the time how toxic and manipulative the relationship was, besides him being significantly older he often fed on her insecurities which would lead to her inevitably ending things after a year. she dove into songwriting as an outlet for her feelings and soon after discovered she had an amazing singing voice and a natural talent to play piano. tommy pushed her to pursue a career in music, they often fought about her lack of motivation to build a career out of it. salem wanted to just have fun and experiment in different ventures while tommy was focused on making her his protégé. she ended up releasing an album when she turned 21 and made a name for herself in the industry. she toured around for 2 years and released an ep during that time and some smaller shows for another year before deciding she inevitably needed a break before starting her second album.

*salem originally was supposed to arrive in valpo for some much needed time off to spend with her (now ex) boyfriend leon. after ending things with him over the phone she realized she made a huge mistake and decided to come to valpo anyways to hopefully patch things up and maybe meet some new people along the way too.

spencer lifted an eyebrow, shrugging at salem, "i mean, what can they do to you? complain because you're giving them a good home? call the cat police? there's probably too many cats to keep track of here anyway." they looked around, a cat perched on the table adjacent to them, "plus, i dunno, they seem drawn to you, they should let you have one free of charge." they stated, "ask the staff which one they like the least, bet they'd let you have that one." they joked, scratching one of the smaller cats behind the ears, "if you decided to opt for stealing one instead of asking, i'll create a distraction for you." they half-teased.
