Explain the basic: shielding and banishing
Shielding and banishing are two of the most important things you have to learn before you start your journey as a witch. Both practices are essential for maintaining energetic boundaries and ensuring a safe environment for magical or spiritual work. used to protect oneself from negative energies, entities, or influences and to remove unwanted energies or entities from a space. Here's a breakdown of shielding and banishing in witchcraft:
Shielding: Shielding involves creating a protective barrier around oneself, which acts as a defense against negative energies or influences. It helps maintain personal boundaries and prevents unwanted energies from affecting one's well-being. Common methods of shielding include:
Visualization: Visualizing a shield of white light, a protective bubble, or an impenetrable barrier around your body. This visualization can be accompanied by the intention of repelling negativity while allowing positive energies to flow.
Energy Manipulation: Drawing upon personal energy or universal energy to create a protective shield. This can involve using hand movements, gestures, or energy manipulation techniques to form and maintain the shield.
Use of Objects or Symbols: Carrying protective talismans, amulets, or symbols such as pentagrams, runes, or protective sigils that represent personal protection. These items can aid in maintaining the shield's strength.
Banishing: Banishing refers to the act of removing negative energies, entities, or influences from a person, place, or space. It's a method used to cleanse and purify an area or oneself from unwanted energies. Common practices for banishing include:
Smudging or Cleansing: Burning herbs like sage, palo santo, or cedar to clear a space of negative energies. Using the smoke to cleanse and purify the environment.
Salt or Protective Circles: Sprinkling salt around a space or creating a protective circle by physically drawing or visualizing it to keep unwanted energies out or to contain them within the circle for removal.
Rituals and Spells: Performing rituals or casting spells specifically designed for banishing. This involves using candles, herbs, oils, and specific incantations to remove negative influences or energies.
Invocation of Higher Powers: Calling upon higher spiritual entities, deities, or guides associated with protection or cleansing to aid in banishing unwanted energies or entities.

On the surface that might sound kind of scary, even downright evil, but I assure you itās the farthest thing from. In this blog I will attempt to give you an in-site into the basics of death work. Please know that every witch does things their own unique way, so for the purposes of this work I will be trying to explain things in as unified a fashion as I can. This is intended to essentially be a starting point to bounce off of.
«~ ⢠~»
Death energy, simply put is energy called from death and death symbols. Itās about stillness, endings, and the deconstructing and reconstructing processes. Itās about using whatās in the past to fertilize whatās new and grow something that has purpose in the next step of your life. Itās about the acceptance of inevitability and what we canāt change to bring about what we can. Many practitioners call on death energy in everyday spell work the same way you would any other energy. In that sense itās not to different from life energy.
«~ ⢠~»
For a lot of death witches, doing work in a cemetery or graveyard is a must, although there are those that donāt, a great deal more either do or will do when they get the chance. Lots goes into this type of work though and a thorough study on the subject should be done before pursuing this type of magick. However, some key points to remember are to always be respectful, obey the laws and rules of your land regarding the resting places, and listen to what the dead tell you.
Itās very important to recognize that there are always going to be practitioners that have their own unique rules on this subject, but the best way to know if the dead favor something or not is to ask them. What rules you inevitably believe should revolve around what the dead are comfortable with. That said, some of these rules are shared amongst practitioners. I have compiled a list below with some of them. Remember, this is very basic and what a practitioner adds or changes is up to them.
Typically these are the oldest spirits in the cemetery and are in charge of maintaining order. Most offerings include things like coins, drink, bread, or apples.
Itās important to let the spirits know what your intentions are. Will you be doing magick at the crossroads, magick at a grave, or foraging? The gatekeeper should let you know through energy what is acceptable. Remember each Cemetery is different and has different rules over all.
Gifts on a grave belong to the spirit dwelling there. Itās okay to pick up things like trash, or moldy flowers in still water but, rocks, dried or fresh flowers, feathers, etc should be left alone.
Try not to walk near the headstone of a grave (youāre walking on their body. Try to stay near the feet and always say excuse me politely if you have to step on it), always ask for a spirits help never demand it, and always bring them an offering as a thank you.
If youāre gathering dirt, sticks, or plants from a cemetery, even if itās not on a grave, and you get a feeling like you shouldnāt touch it, then donāt. Spirits will always let you know what they want to keep. Obey that or itās theft.
Being polite and thanking your hosts is always a must in general and can bring good energies between you and the dead. Especially if you intend on going back to work at that Cemetery.

Another common staple amongst death workers and arguably one of the most misunderstood practices. Simply put, this practice is divination with the dead. Itās all about connecting to and asking the dead for answers from the beyond. Lots of that used to be done in the cemetery and as a result many wild and fantastic rumors about zombie creation were formed, but thatās far from the truth. There were indeed many radical understandings within the practices history however but as science matured so did the knowledge on what this practice actually was.
While necromancy is still done in cemeteries even today, itās not a must. Calling fourth a spirit can be done a number of ways and will definitely alter and change based on the witch. Some working maybe more cultural than others, and some may be more complex. The uniqueness of these practices can number well into the double digits and is always interesting to learn. Some of the most common spirit summoning techniques (aside from going directly to someoneās grave) are the spirit board, a mirror, and the pendulum. As for how these spirits are called, that too can differ from witch to witch. Most often though, it can involve candles or crystals as an energy source, a personal item or favored item like food, and/or the spirits name. It can be as simple as physically calling out to the abyss, beckoning the spirit forward or as elaborate a ritual as calling in the four directional guardians or a guide to lead them to you.
Regardless of how itās done, itās always a good rule of thumb to be respectful to them. Donāt demand from them, ask instead, and offer gratitude and an offering when you end the session.
«~ ⢠~»
Lots of death workers may worship deity just like any other practitioner. However the deity they are generally more drawn to are often either associated with the underworld or a psychopomp, like Osiris, Hades, Anubis, or Hecate. However they may also be a deity tide in some way to the personification of death, much like Thanatos.
Even if the witch chooses not to utilize deity they can still conjure up spiritual guides of some sort. These guides can be something as common as ancestral spirits or even animal spirits. Most common animal guides often have some death association and symbolism to them. So animals like Black cats, bats, vultures, owls, crows and ravens are quite popular.
«~ ⢠~»
Its not uncommon to see bones on the altars of death witches. Many beliefs around these tools and what they represent circulate within the community. For some specific animal bones itās believed you can use that animal spirit and energy. Other beliefs revolve not around the animal itself but rather the type of bone, as each one has its own unique symbolism attached to it. The possibilities are near limitless and for most death practitioners they are a very necessary tool within the craft. Some practitioners even collect additional things like insect exoskeletons, animal skins, and preserved body parts like a rabbits foot.
DISCLAIMER! People should be made aware that itās always encouraged for all materials to be ethnically sourced. Any form of unlawful collection or cruelty is frowned upon and not condoned within the community.
«~ ⢠~»
As started above, these are just some of the basics of death work within the pagan community and serves as a starting point to bounce off of. Itās very important to do your own research and come to your own conclusions regarding this craft and always remember to obey your local laws. Death work can be very fulfilling but not when itās done under illegal circumstances.
This is a powerful spell jar recipe for witches that need a confidence boost. Whether within the context of self-love and body acceptance, or if you need a little boost for a first date or a job interview, this jar will be an essential magick tool. You will need:
- A jar that seals well
- Ginger root (adventure, personal confidence, prosperity)
- Honeysuckle (strong confidence, intuition)
- Thyme (courage, strength)
- Gold glitter (power, radiance, happiness)
- Citrine (enlightenment, optimism, warmth)
- A small lock of your hair or other magical taglock to represent you
Allow the jar to charge in the sunlight as often as possible. The citrine in the jar will retain that energy and fill your space with an aura of confidence, self-love and courage.
I hope this isn't rude, but I'm following a LOT of witch blogs. you being one of them. yet, when I look at the witch-related asks & answers for all of those blogs, other blogs are helpful and list spells and such. you just "no" whenever someone asks? Can I ask why you reject magic for a lot of your situations, considering you run a magic blog and are quite literally a creator of a magical how-to book?
simply because magic is not needed in every situation, nor is it advisable. recognizing when magic is and isnāt needed, or even a good idea is important in the life of the witch.Ā
here are a couple of examples of such:
bewitching your significant other (consent issues anyone?)
bewitching a non-signif to find out personal things (consent again)
asked for a spell for communicating with spirits (just because a skill isnāt developed doesnāt mean a spell will replace experience)
weight loss spells (dangerous and against my personal morals)
however, the one outlier i include is this, because itās important:
easily google-able question (as stated in previous posts, i encourage people to develop their own research skills so they can grow in their craft when they reach an area of their path where there isnāt someone around to hold their hand and slip them the answers)

*** This spell is meant for increasing the bond of a previously established relationship. This spell wonāt create a relationship that was not previously there.***
CHANT:
Like a bee to a flower, we need to be lovers, one cannot live without the other, and should it be found that we are apart, weāll be connected at the core of our hearts. For I am your one and you are to mine, forever and always, together in time.
WHAT YOUāLL NEED:
1. A purple candle 2. A gold thread/string
WHAT YOUāLL NEED TO DO:
1. Light the purple candle. 2. The gold thread will be a representation of your bond. Wrap it around your candle and tie a knot ONLY ONCE while repeating the chant. 3. Keep this candle at your bedside or somewhere in the roomĀ that you share with your partner. You can keep the candle lit as long as you would like but you can blow out the candle once the knot has been tied. 4. Every night, simply light the candle and retighten the knot. This represents strengthening the bond of your relationship continuously. Because relationships are a continuous effort, they must be continuously strengthened. You may retighten throughout the day if necessary. Repeat the chant while doing this as often as you can (kind of like singing during any task). ***OPTIONAL: You may engrave a sigil of Strength into the side of the candle***
Blessed be.

These could apply to any earthly god or goddess really, so feel free to borrow any ideas that speak to you! And please tell me about how you worship your deity, I'd love to know ššŖ²
Going for daily, mindful walks. Sometimes I'll listen to music, other times I'll just listen to the world around me.
Wear a lot of greens and browns, as well as recycled and more sustainable fabrics (a lot of my clothes are also thrifted, and I try to avoid overconsumption)
Decorate my space with earthy colours, posters and pieces of the earth - I have crystals, bones, pressed flowers and even rocks and twigs in my room
Learn about nature and the world around me - I am a zoology student so my academic career is also a devotion to Mother Nature but I also learn about what animals I can see locally, I study when and where flowers bloom and how to tell when rain is coming etc
Reconnect with my more primal side - a significant part of my work with Mother Nature is reognising and accepting that humans are animals, and we behave as such; we cannot allow ourselves to become seperate from wilderness. To me, this involves connecting with my intuition and gut feelings, recognising my emotions and desires and working with them
Making and wearing daisy chains or flower crowns
Creating art inspired by the world around me and myself
Caring for animals (that includes other humans) when I can and it's safe: from helping a snail move across the path, to making sure a dying bird can rest peacefully, to giving food and money to the homeless
Loving myself, though it isn't always easy
Spending time outside with my hands in the dirt or streams, speaking with the trees and birds and listening to their replies
I wanted to do a quick safety guide to spirit work (been wanting to do this for a long time, tb).Ā
Around Halloween, it becomes a favorite hobby of everyone, and while I think spirit work is an awesome way to enhance your craft, I also think you need to take it incredibly slow. Hereās some tips that I use, and I would advise for those of you whoāre delving into spirit work to use as well:
-Protection: This applies to yourself and your space. Often I wear protective jewelry and meditate before I begin spirit work. I put myself in a mindset where Iām in control of whatās going on, so that I know who Iām talking to or who I want to talk to.
-Be specific: Donāt just call out to random spirits. If you donāt have a name in mindāthatās find. But specify that you want good spirits entering your spaceāand only good spirits. If youāre not used to spirit work, asking for any spirit to come through the veil can attract negative spirits.
-Say goodbye: You must say goodbye to the spirits. This is something I practice daily, because they do and will linger around if you donāt! even if they are good, maybe itās not something you want. Good can also be scary. Ā And thank them for their time as well.
-Banishment: This is essentially telling a clingy spirit to leave if they havenāt already. Ā There is a variety of different ways to tell a spirit
-Cleanse: Cleanse your space afterwards just to ward off any remaining energy. This isnāt quite the same concept as banishment, as with banishment youāre dealing with an entire entity. But, with every ritual you do and every entity you invite into your space, left over energy can stay and build up. So, youāll want to cleanse it. this too can be done a variety of ways (I have cleansing crystals with me, so I usually skip this step).
-Choose a safe means of communication: Basically, if you are a beginner DO NOT use the Ouija board. I might be biased against it, but I also know that the tool can be used correctly and yield amazing results. However, because many beginners using it donāt do so correctly (and thereās a terrible culture attached to it), I advise you to try safer methods. Consider a pendulum, dice, and automatic writing. Or even the safest form (imo), mediation.
any means of communication can turn out badly if you donāt know what youāre doing though.Ā
-Ask for the intercession of other spirits: In general, before you begin spirit work, look for a spirit that might help you. this can be your guide, your ancestors, or a religious deity. Now if youāre all trying to do spirit work on Halloween, you probably going to skip this part because it can take a very long time. but perhaps instead of reaching out to random spirits on Halloween, use it as a time to find a spirit companion.
-Use things to safely enhance your experience: My go to is selenite! Others have different things, just stay safe and healthy!
Also just do your research! Feel free to ask around. Tumblr is one of the largest collections of witches Iāve ever seen on the internet so please, please take advantage of that!
If I have anything else to add, Iāll do so later on! Theseāagaināare all based on personal experience, but if you have any questions about anything ask me. I also invite others to add their own opinions and suggestions! Being rude wonāt be tolerated!
