Like any other school of Magick, Divination uses many different methods in order to divine esoteric knowledge, including the past, present, and possible future.
Important note: It is important to remember that, no matter the type of divinatory practices used, no single person is able to tell the future. There are always variables at play that may change your future and your destiny. Divination simple says that, should things continue as they are, this is the most likely outcome of the situation.
In and around all things is a flow of energy. You can think of this flow of energy as the circle of life type of thing from Lion King. “The circle of life flows through us all”, or, like water: Water particles are everywhere, even in the air we breath, and is thus constantly in motion. Same with energy. Energy makes up the very fabric of our existence, making us connected to everything around us.
Here’s a witchy secret they don’t often bother to tell you: We are connected to this energy, and this energy is connected to all things. Energy, at its base, is information.
When we tap into this energy, we are able to see the information that the energy has to give us. Different diviners use different methods of tapping into this energy, but it’s all the same.
By no means is this list exhaustive. As mentioned before, there are many ways in which diviners practice divination. None is better than the other, and all accomplish basically the same thing. There are a few that I have dabbled in, and a lot that I have not.
The most common and well known form of divination is divining using a deck of cards, most commonly tarot. Among the cards are different sets of titles and imagery that is meant to invoke some sort of reaction from your intuition. The best way to work with the tarot, oracle, or any other deck of cards is allow the cards to speak to you, and not you for it. In other words, allow there to be a natural progression as you read the tarot, instead of forcing meanings where there may be none.
Runes are another form of divination that use ancient symbols housing esoteric wisdom to divine. According to the legends which I’ve read, the runes are Norse in origin, but the exact details of how they came to be is a mystery. It is said that they were sacred to the Norse goddess Freya, and were possibly even discovered by her. She then introduced then to Odin, the Allfather, god of war, and the greater mysteries. Odin, who became fascinated by them, hung himself in a tree to die a shamanic death, and was then reborn as Odin the Runemaster. At some point, it is rumored that Odin then gifted the runes to man.
Whatever the legends, the runes do have an energy all their own, but are not quite as easy as the tarot to read. They are symbols, ancient and unknown in origin, not pretty little colored images on a deck of cards. The best way to work with runes is to learn their general meaning, and allow them to expand their knowledge to you over time.
Scrying is another popular form of divination that uses a smooth, reflective surface in order to “See” images within the depths. Most commonly, crystal balls, black mirrors, and bowls of water are used.
This form of divination is difficult to master, and takes tremendous patience. Thus, I will not be able to go into further detail about this at present.
“Throwing bones” as it were. I’ve had more time to learn a little bit more about this, and I have a very basic understanding of how this form of divination works.
Osteomancy uses bones, preferably from small animals, as well as other shells, beads, and curios collective known as the “bones” thrown out onto a cloth to divine the future. Depending on where the bones land, the diviner is then able to use their meaning to paint a picture of the quarents future, past, and present.
I’ve read a few blog posts about this form, and it seems that, most commonly, osteomancers use what is known as “animism” the idea that everything has a spirit and is alive, in order to divine. While this may or may not be true, I believe that bone throwing employs the use to psychometry in order to decipher the bones.
Which brings me to my last point…
Psychometry is a powerful way to exercise your “Psychic muscles”, but it also takes a lot of patience to learn. Psychometry refers to the latent or inherent or learned ability to perceive residual information off of objects and/or people, usually by touch.
Psychometry is best practiced in one of two ways.
Collect various, preferably older items, such as necklaces, pocket watches, other small antiques, wood, shells, etc. Place all of the items under a cloth or under a bowl and then shuffle them around, making sure that you shuffle long enough for you to have no way of knowing where each item is. You then place your hand over the object, fell its energy, and try and divine what the object is. It’ll take time, but your accuracy will vastly improve, and you’ll find that other esoteric things come to you easily.
Find random objects such as old building bricks, signs, lampposts, antiques, etc. and place your hand on them. Close your eyes, and try to sense the object. See all of the memories that it houses within. Who did it belong to? What has it witnessed? Where did it come from? Eventually, you’ll begin to gain an understanding of the objects around you even without needing to touch them and close your eyes. Then, eventually, you’ll be able to divine a person’s past, present, and future using the same exact method, giving you yet another tool in your divinatory arsenal.
There are, of course, many MANY other methods that I missed. The ones I mentioned above are simply the ones that I personally have, so far, dabbled in. The tarot, of course, is my strongest practice, but others are working their way up there as well.
Short list of other divination practices:
Tesseomancy- Tea leaf reading
Pyromancy- Fire scrying
Lithomancy- Stone throwing
Pendulum- Divining with a heavy, pointed object on a chain
Numerology- Divining with numbers
Astrology- Divining using the stars and their alignments
Automatic writing/Drawing- Divining by closing your eyes and allowing your subconscious mind to write/draw
These could apply to any earthly god or goddess really, so feel free to borrow any ideas that speak to you! And please tell me about how you worship your deity, I'd love to know 💚🪲
Going for daily, mindful walks. Sometimes I'll listen to music, other times I'll just listen to the world around me.
Wear a lot of greens and browns, as well as recycled and more sustainable fabrics (a lot of my clothes are also thrifted, and I try to avoid overconsumption)
Decorate my space with earthy colours, posters and pieces of the earth - I have crystals, bones, pressed flowers and even rocks and twigs in my room
Learn about nature and the world around me - I am a zoology student so my academic career is also a devotion to Mother Nature but I also learn about what animals I can see locally, I study when and where flowers bloom and how to tell when rain is coming etc
Reconnect with my more primal side - a significant part of my work with Mother Nature is reognising and accepting that humans are animals, and we behave as such; we cannot allow ourselves to become seperate from wilderness. To me, this involves connecting with my intuition and gut feelings, recognising my emotions and desires and working with them
Making and wearing daisy chains or flower crowns
Creating art inspired by the world around me and myself
Caring for animals (that includes other humans) when I can and it's safe: from helping a snail move across the path, to making sure a dying bird can rest peacefully, to giving food and money to the homeless
Loving myself, though it isn't always easy
Spending time outside with my hands in the dirt or streams, speaking with the trees and birds and listening to their replies

Mabon, celebrated around September 21 to September 29, marks the autumnal equinox and the second harvest of the year. It’s a time of balance, as the hours of light and dark stand equal, symbolizing the transition between summer and winter. It's a time when witches and practitioners honor the changing seasons, express gratitude for the Earth's abundance, and connect with the energies of balance and transition. The term "Mabon" for this celebration is named after Mabon ap Modron, a character from Welsh mythology. It is often associated with the mythological theme of the abducted and imprisoned child who later becomes a hero, which parallels the changing seasons.

Mabon ap Modron, also known as Maponus, is a character from Welsh mythology. In some versions of the myth, Mabon is portrayed as a divine hero or a child who was abducted from his mother, Modron, and imprisoned. He is rescued after 3 years and plays a significant role in Welsh mythological tales. The name "Mabon" itself means "son" or "young man" in Welsh, and it is connected to the theme of rebirth and the return of the light.

Legend has it that on the last day of summer, Hades, the god of the Underworld, saw Persephone picking flowers in a field. He immediately fell in love with her and abducted her, wanting to keep her by his side as the queen of the dead. Upon discovering the disappearance of her daughter, Demeter, the goddess of harvest, set out to find her. Unable to locate Persephone, Demeter’s sorrow and despair were so overwhelming that the flowers, trees, and all vegetation withered, bringing all growth on Earth to a halt. The gods of Olympus, who were powerless to ignore the prayers of humans, reached a compromise with Hades regarding Persephone’s return. She would spend only six months each year with Hades in the Underworld. To avenge herself, Demeter decreed that during those six months, nature would mourn, and nothing would grow on Earth until Persephone ascended again from the Underworld.

A lot of people seem to have issues using pendulums to get specific answers, to identify a spirits species or to find out things about who they are or how they look so here are some basic questions that can be answered with yes no or maybe. Honestly this is all just like playing that game Guess Who.
Are you a ___? : pretty basic just go down the list of all the things you can think of until you either run out or get a yes.
EX: Demon, Angel, Vampire, Werewolf, Shapeshifter, Hellhound, Harpy, etc
Are you more animal like? (Dragons, hounds, etc)
Are you more humanoid?
Are you a human spirit?
Are you a Death related spirit ?? (Dullahan, Grim, Reaper, Banshee, etc)
Are you an elemental spirit? (fire, earth, water, air, ice, snow, lightning)
^^this is usually a subcategory. For example if you get water and faerie you are looking for a species of fae connected to water
Are you connected to a specific religion or culture
If yes specify which and then go through the list? religion? Abrahamic? Culture? Irish??
This is where shit get touchy so be respectful of other cultures and their spirits okay?
Are you something I already work with?
For spirit workers with a large spirit family this could be helpful
If you get a maybe it likely means that they are but a different type. Say you get a maybe and when you go through the types of spirits you work with you get a maybe for vampire. They are likely a different type of vampire than the one you already work with
Is you’re species one well known / known at all by humans?
Yes this does happen, and yes it complicates things a bit
Do you know what humans call you’re kind?
This happens occasionally usually with demons or subcategories of bigger species labels (angels, demons. etc)
Are you male?
Are you female?
Are you both/ neither male and female?
Do you use She/Her | He/Him | They/Them pronouns
Do you have a sexual orientation?
Are you more masculine physically ?
Are you more feminine physically?
Do you feel neither human gender fits your physical description?
Do you have a birthday?
Go through all the months until you get a yes then do the same with the days. You will not likely get a year
Are you older than 100?
Ask in large intervals until you start to get more specific. ‘are you over 100?’ YES ‘over 200?’ NO ‘Over 150′ NO ‘Over 130′ Yes ‘over 140′ NO ‘I31 ‘NO ‘132′ NO ‘133′ YES , boom now you know their age in human years.
Are you taller than 5ft?
Basically the same as the age one but with height ‘are you over 5ft’ Yes ‘Over 6ft’ NO ‘5′5?’ YES
Do you have hair?
Do you have long/short hair?
Is you’re hair Brown/Black/Blonde/etc
Is you’re hair a color humans could have naturally? Green/Purple/Pink/White/Gold
Is you’re hair made of something other than hair? Fire/Feathers/Snakes/Tentacles
Do you have eyes?
One eye? Two? Three?
Do you have pupils?
Are you’re eyes one solid color?
Are you’re eyes more than one color?
Brown? Gold? Blue? Green? Red? Gold?
Are you’re pupils like mine? Like a cats? Like a snakes? Like a goats?
Are you’re sclerae white? Black? Pink? etc
Are you pale?
Is you’re skin dark?
Is you’re skin a color humans usually have?
Do you have scales/fur?
Are you’re teeth pointed?
Are you’re ears like mine? Long/Short and pointed? Like a satyr/fawn (reference)?
Do you have sharp nails or claws?
Are you’re feet like mine?
Are you’re feet like an animals?
Do you have wings?
Do you have a tail?
Do you have horns?
Do you have more than two arms?
Can you shapeshift / Do you have a more humanoid form
Usually a question for things like hellhounds and hellcats who in most cases can switch between an animals and human form
Do you want a vessel?
Can you assist me with a specific form of magic/witchcraft
Blood magic? Dream Work? Energy work? Astral travel?
Have I ever known you in a past life?
be careful with this one, don’t be manipulated. Also even if they did know you in a past life it does not mean they know what is best for you now
Do you have have a preferred type of offering?
Food? Incense? Energy? Blood? Music?
Are there specific ways we can bond?
Movies? Reading? Witchcraft? Art? Music?
Do you feed on energy? Blood? Physical food? Etc
Do you have a preferred method of communication?
Pendulum, Tarot, Ouija, Runes, Telepathy
Will you be able to help protect me from other spirits?
never really completely on spirits to protect you, protect yourself
Do you have more than one physical form

Bone Divination (Osteomancy) is an ancient practice of fortune telling used throughout many cultures. It’s important to find personal pieces that you deeply connect with.
List of objects commonly used in Bone Divination sets: - Old Coins - Crystals and Stones - Dice - Seashells - Animal Claws - Small animal Jaw bone - Animal feet - Nuts - Seed Pods - Skeleton Keys - Beads made of glass, wood, animal horn or bone - Metal Charms - Personal Jewelry such as rings or pendants - Any items that hold a personal meaning for you
Taking care of your divination set: - Regularly cleanse your pieces with White Sage - Keep them with you during the day to form a deep bond with the pieces - If unable to keep them near during the day, keep close to you at night - I find that most pieces like to rest on natural surfaces- wood, moss, etc - Charge them under the Full Moon when possible, especially crystals or stones - Meditate with the pieces and listen to what they have to say - Occasionally bury the bones lightly in an indoor flowerpot for a short time (or outside in the garden if not raining). Bones tend to like being in the ground. It allows them to rest.

Of course, only put in your book of shadows/grimoire what you want. If you don't want to put certain subjects in your book then that's fine. It's your book, utilize it how you want. This is just a masterlist of ideas that I've put together. Feel free to add anything else to the list that I may have missed, because there's absolutely no way I included everything.
And for the love of all the gods, if you come across a closed entity or practice, don't try to work with the entity or practice if you're not already part of that group or tradition. You can research it but don't practice it.

Dolls and poppets are utilized across many faiths, however often witches neglect to “breath life” into them. Not doing so doesn’t make them wholly ineffective, however going the extra step really amps up the potency, especially when using it as sympathetic magic or creating a protective being! It’s a relatively simple step, but highly dependent upon which path you follow. I’ll briefly cover my methodology.
Foremost, I would like to specify the difference between the two types of dolls I utilize. One being sympathetic magic, the one most often thought of when people think of dolls and witchcraft. Voodoo dolls. This is a misnomer, as the common portrayal off voodoo dolls in media have skewed the original purpose of such dolls. Originally the dolls were used by practitioners not to affect people, but as a guide to the sufferers ailments and treatments – more akin to a “medical chart.” However, they have since (and really, in European magical traditions for centuries) been used to heal or harm a specific victim in which the doll was made to their likeness. This is a sympathetic doll, made in their likeness, usually incorporating some sort of personal affect (hair, clothing, blood, etc.).
The second type, and the kind I most often use, are dolls not based on any individual, but instead exist to act as a guardian of sorts or facilitate change/growth/health/etc. These are unique and very much a product of your imagination. Create them to be whatever you see fit.
That being said, let’s begin;;
Sympathetic Dolls: Begin by first, stitching the doll together in the likeness of he/she you wish to influence. You can be as general or as specific as you want – matching hair, eyes, facial features, build are all common concepts. Traditionally the dolls were stuffed with Spanish Moss (most probably due to the abundance in the American South) however you can stuff it with anything you have on hand. If you have anything of the persons, now would be the time to use it, hair can be wrapped and stuffed in the doll, pieces of their clothes can be folded and placed inside, blood should be on a scrap of cloth, dried and then added.
Once the doll is complete and you’re satisfied with its image (in truth, dolls have been made out of anything and everything, the only crucial step is the following), you must give it life. For sympathetic dolls, this can be as simple or difficult as you wish. I prefer to take the simple route and sit with the doll and focus intently on the person you wish to connect to it. I then mentally stitch the spirit of the person to the doll (either at the heart or at the feet – as a short of shadow). Vocalize your intent and revel in your creation.
Conceptual Dolls/Guardians: These are my personal favorites to create, in all honesty. I find poppets to be a lot of extra work, however they are useful in remote healing/hexing. These, as I mentioned, are beings of your thoughts. Tulpas, in a way. Begin by gathering your materials and ideas. Create a doll to symbolize whatever you wish to accomplish. As far as this tutorial goes, I’ll use the example of a Guardian or a doll for protection. It can look however you wish, and be as simple as sticks tied together, to the most intricately created doll you could muster. I, personally, stick with a small doll (no bigger than 8 or 10 inches) with yarn hair, simple clothing and a painted face. I often stuff mine with herbs associated with my will, as well as batting and sometimes stray scraps of fabric.
After your doll is complete, take it to the Crossroads. It can be a door, a gate (I use the gate of a remote cemetery near me), a cemetery, even a maternity ward if you’re that committed and light a candle. Fill your mind with intention, then connect with the energy of your crossroads. Feel the planes converge, and bend this erratic energy to your will, funneling it through your consciousness and into your doll. See the energy shape, bend, coalesce into a being of your intent and give it a Name, as there is much power in a Name. Connect its energy to our physical plane by allowing it refuge within the fabric of the doll you have created. Leave a gift at the Crossroads, and blow out your candle, sealing in the doll’s spirit. Use it as you desire, but do not neglect it.
Thus ends this tutorial!
Best of luck,

If you are comfortable with dream work, this is a way you can receive messages from a specific plant. This is the method I personally have experience with and have done. If possible, I would recommend having a trimming of some kind from the plant you wish to communicate with, but this is not the only way.
For example, if I wanted to receive messages from my Rosemary plant, I would save a bit of her leaves (dry for repeated use) for this purpose. If you have a plant but can’t take any cuttings away for whatever reason, you could get some from the store or kitchen cabinet if it’s a cooking herb pant (place a little before your plant and keep the rest for your work) or even create a sigil that simply represents your plant and draw it on a piece of paper (if I do this, I like to “show” my plant the sigil in my minds eye at some point just to further tie the plant to the symbol). Tell the plant at some point that you wish to speak with it in your dreams tonight, don’t worry too much if it got the message.
Before going to bed, place the cutting/symbol inside your pillow case. I also have a bedside altar space and I place some cuttings on that as well for good measure. If you take any other measures to induce a dream (consume a substance, smell a dream inducing herb or oil, meditate before bed, etc) do so. Any extra dream boosts are welcome, I prefer to do a specific meditation I created for meeting/speaking with spirits in dreams.
📝Tip: Keep a journal and a writing utensil near the bed if you wish to record any messages before you forget them when you wake!📝
Go to sleep and be open to how a plant may communicate with you.
Some notes on dream communication: what to expect
🌱For starters, they may not show up at all. You extended an invitation to meet up with you in the dream world and they have a right not to attend.
🌱They may literally just “appear” in your dreams and that’s it. Or is it? Sometimes you are dreaming away and just see your plant (or something that looks like it but bigger/brighter/fuller) chilling in a pot set on a counter top. Nothing else happens, it’s just there. If you can in the moment (for lucid dreamers) try to think about when it appeared and why. For example, my oregano plant suddenly appeared during a nightmare I had. It said next to nothing but I just felt its presence and suddenly became aware I was only dreaming (which made me feel 100% better and in control of the nightmare). In this case, while nothing was said, I received the message of “hey you’re dreaming, you’re fine.”
🌱They may have a bigger or more specific message to you, and it’s up to you to try to interpret it to the best of your abilities. Messages are not always clear in the slightest.
🌱The message may have nothing to do with what you wanted to talk about. Did you just dream of your tropical humidity loving plant in a scarce desert? Maybe the message is designed to tell you something about the level of care it is receiving. Don’t expect every message to be about your spiritual enlightenment, sometimes a plant really just wants an opportunity to say “hey I need more/less of *insert need here*.”
🌱As with any communication with plants, remember that they can refuse to communicate with you. They may simply not wish to communicate now, but perhaps another time or with a different method. They could be indifferent towards you and would prefer not to communicate (IMO, plants aren’t big on politely sitting through a conversation they have no desire to be in). There is always the chance that (get this) they just don’t like communicating with humans (either in this specific manner or not at all).
🌱You may have to try over and over again to get a message. If a plant does not show one time, it may agree at another time. Or perhaps it has agreed, but you just aren’t getting the message. Practice, practice, practice.
Troubleshooting
So this method isn’t working but you want to continue to give it a try.
🌱Are you a decent dreamer? Do you remember your dreams semi consistently? If not, it may be a good idea to develop your dream recall skills first or even learning to lucid dream (you don’t have to know how to lucid dream but I personally found it helpful). You could be receiving messages nightly and fail to remember them, it happens!
🌱You are comfortable working in dreams but it just isn’t happening? This leads me to one of the most important aspects of troubleshooting this type of communication; your plant choice. If you’ve already bonded with a particular plant, this is an ideal one to start with. It’s good to pick a plant whose energy you know and perhaps they will be more willing to meet you in your dreams if they know you better. I wouldn’t recommend starting with a new plant or any plant you just don’t bond with very well. Another benefit to selecting a plant you bond with is that they are more likely to be willing to practice with you. You may have to try (and fail) at dreaming multiple times.
Another tip for choosing a plant to work with you in dreams is to pick a plant that is associated with dreaming. Plenty of plants not associated with dreams can and will communicate just fine (especially if you’ve bonded), but considering the properties of the plant may help you connect easier.
Think you are dreaming but struggling to remember it? Try working with Rosemary, as smelling it during the night (if you used a cutting) will naturally help you remember your dream.
You dream but aren’t receiving messages at all? Try dandelion, mugwort, or lavender.
Work with a plant that likes dream work, and be sure that you like it as well. If you just don’t enjoy or can’t do dream work at all, that is okay! There are other ways to communicate.
But if you’re interested in dreaming with plants, have patience.
