Soulmates AU wangxian where their skins reflect. So Lwj has all of Wwx' scars (bite marks from dogs, belt scars from Madam Yu, a surgery from when JC needed a kidney, a burn mark on his chest, etc) and Wwx has... Nothing. Because they have the same callouses from sports and bruises from training but Lwj has no scars nor does he write on himself or accidentally gets ink on his hands. So Wwx thinks he has no soulmate, because even when he writes things to him (Hi! How are you?? WHO are you?? Are you well??? Are you there????) he gets no reply. Lwj does see it, he just knows his parents were soulmates and their relationship was fucked up, and that his uncle's soulmate didn't want him, and that his brother's relationship with his soulmate is stranged because he likes someone else. So he doesn't want a soulmate at all.
Anyways. Shit happens in Wwx's life, he hits rock bottom and starts getting tattoos. Why not? It's not like he's saddling anyone with them.
Cue Lwj watching ink accumulate on his skin while he's working a CORPORATE JOB. His uncle thinks it unprofessional and they are creeping towards the neck and hands.
So he writes to his soulmate to please stop.
His soulmate: so you DO exist uh.
Lwj: I do not want a soulmate. Or tattoos. Please refrain from getting any more and from trying to contact me.
Wwx: ...
Wwx: okay.
Thirteen years later Lan Wanji falls in love with the gorgeous Biomedical Engineer working at his company, Wei Wuxian, and is doing his best to approach this man who has been so very obviously mistreated (Wwx is on his YLZ era with others). They get closer little by little. And then one day they are on a date and Wwx rolls up his sleeves and Lwj comes face to face with a lotus flower sleeve he knows intimately well.
Cue angst.
When did WWX fall in love--before he died, or after he was resurrected?
I propose a third option: both are true.
I'm very firmly in the camp of WWX being head over heels pretty much right from the start, but that ignores a lot of the emotional growth between the two of them after his resurrection. On the other hand, calling that growth "falling in love" ignores his obvious feelings right from the start, and also just doesn't seem like what's going on. His thoughts and feelings about LWJ don't really change all that much.
But here's what does change: WWX starts thinking about himself.
He starts putting himself and his needs into the equation. He goes from seeing LWJ as a trustworthy and good paragon of virtue to seeing him as someone he personally trusts. From objectively the most handsome person in existence to someone he personally really wants to sleep with finds handsome.
So it's not that he fell in love after resurrection--he loved LWJ right from the start--but also he did fall in love after resurrection, because that's when he started thinking about LWJ as someone he could be with. Not that he didn't want to be with him before; instead, he didn't have a concept of personally wanting (being able to want, being allowed to want, being allowed to have) anyone at all.
One of the things that interests me about Wangxian's sex life is that in reality Lan Wangji must be soooooooo gentle with him.
Hear me out. There's this very popular and widely accepted idea that everything in literature is about sex but sex. I... don't really agree that everything in literature is about sex, but I do agree that sex is rarely about sex.
Yes, Wei Wuxian likes getting tossed around and bitten to hell etc etc and Lan Wangji likes giving it to him blah blah- They're horny kinksters and it's well within the realms of normal and they're obviously both fine and happy with it.
But Lan Wangji lifted a monolith WITH ONE ARM. Thousands of pounds of stone, lifted like a Chili's fajita platter. Wei Wuxian as Mo Xuanyu has a very weak golden core. He is infinitely weaker than his husband on a physical level.
Which means it stands to reason that Lan Wangji has to constantly be mindful of his safety and what his body can handle and be mindful of that even when engaging in rough CNC sex.
It's one of those things that for me highlights the care and reverence Lan Wangji has for Wei Wuxian as a person and as his spouse and lover. He spent years trying and failing to coax Wei Wuxian into a place where he already was, and in this second chance he instead meets Wei Wuxian right where he is.
I find it very sweet, actually.
(just remembered I forgot to post these two posts here, so... here they are)
i know a lot of peeps are going YZY x CSSR because of the Changmian + WWX/JC parallels- but have you considered YZY x Mdm Jin? they're actual besties, and love each other so much that they decided to have their kids marry each other since they can't
also: kinda a pity Mdm Jin never got an actual name so uh my placeholder name for her: 花如燕 / Hua Ruyan- [Flower, Like Sparrow] to contrast with YZY's Purple Kite (bird)- also her nickname: 花蝴蝶 (Flower Butterfly) haha to match the Violet Spider
+
when you're trying your best to date your best friend but she's married to her job [YZY x Mdm Jin, the single moms side of the single dads AU lol]
WIP!!!
Need to see more people talk about Hua Cheng’s intelligence.
He literally learnt a language just by looking and studying it despite having no context for it. He has a near perfect memory and can recall multiple facts in any given area. He runs a gambling house and city and manages all the money. He’s picked up multiple art forms and can recreate Xie Lian perfectly down to his exact robes just from memories he had of him when he was a child. He learnt how to use a saber just through watching Xie Lian once and got so good at it in such a short span of time Xie Lian assumed he was a general and then he won Mt Tonglu. Have I mentioned his memory it’s genuinely scary the other immortals in the series don’t have a memory like his. He reads multiple academic essays and books from multiple kingdoms and time periods implying he’s a polyglot on an insane level. He’s amazing at investigating.
HE BEAT MULTIPLE CIVIL GODS AT DEBATING.
Like just incase you don’t get that, these guys got to heaven for being so smart. They were considered good enough to become a god because of their intelligence and he outsmarted them. He’s so so intelligent like yeah he’s great with a sword but that is Xie Lians thing, he’s only as good as he is because he wants to be Xie Lians equal.
This guy spent his immortality learning literally everything (except calligraphy) and he mastered all of it and sure he is immortal but it’s clear he mastered it in short spans of time. He was carving statues like Michelangelo in under 10 years. Again he learnt to be amazing with a sabre while he was still alive so like 3 years max and mostly from memory. He established a full city with labour, homes, jobs and runs it despite dying as a starving orphan at 17.
HE BEAT MULTIPLE CIVIL GODS AT DEBATING.
This is so accurate for no reason!
now that i've finished tgcf i can make memes about all three books! i was tempted to put binghe at the absolute center because he could easily go into any quadrant at different points in his life, and both lwj and hua cheng could swing jock, but i think the most important thing is that wei wuxian is all four at once. somehow.
Mu Qing, grinning: Before you were what?
Feng Xin: Before I was-
Mu Qing: What?
Feng Xin: Before I was inter-
Mu Qing: Before you were interrupted?
Feng Xin: Cut me off one more time and I swear I'll-
Mu Qing: What?
Feng Xin: *makes frustrated sound*
Xie Lian, nervously: Stop that. Before he hurts you.

Since I'm being jumped by JC antis for pointing out their double standards, let’s dissect the debts owed by Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian, shall we?
Wei Wuxian’s debt to the Jiang Clan is immense by ancient Chinese standards. He was saved, taken in, raised, and trained by them, essentially given a new life and a future as a cultivator. In traditional chinese culture, this kind of debt would require a lifetime of loyalty and service to repay. However, Wei Wuxian chose to protect the Wen Remnants, a decision driven by his personal moral beliefs and sense of justice, effectively putting his principles over his obligations to the Jiang Clan. This choice made it impossible for him to repay his debt in the way ancient values would have dictated, as he directly went against Jiang Cheng's leadership and the interests of the Jiang Clan.
Jiang Cheng’s debt to Wen Qing and Wen Ning is also significant—they saved his life and ensured his parents' bodies were returned with dignity. The expected repayment from him would traditionally involve some form of reciprocal protection or aid, such as offering them sanctuary, advocating for their safety, or using his influence to speak on their behalf. However, as the new leader of the Jiang Clan struggling to rebuild after the Sunshot Campaign, his first duty was to his own clan's survival. Repaying this personal debt to the Wen siblings would have required protecting the Wen Remnants, which would have risked his clan's stability and political standing. In the end, his obligations as a sect leader took priority.
So here’s the issue, antis love to criticize Jiang Cheng for not sacrificing everything to repay the Wen siblings, judging him by the standard of traditional cultural values. But when it comes to Wei Wuxian, they switch to a modern standard claiming "children aren’t expected to repay their caretakers," to dismiss his debt to the Jiang Clan. If we’re judging both characters by the same standard of "repaying debts," the fact is, both made choices based on their circumstances. Jiang Cheng prioritized his clan's survival, and Wei Wuxian chose his moral beliefs. To condemn one while excusing the other is just hypocritical.
I think the greatest testament to how much wangxian is That Bitch™ is that in almost any other fandom, the main ship would absolutely be more often disregarded or at least made into a "he has two hands" when faced with the utterly poetic and heartbreaking and BEAUTIFUL relationship between Wen Ning and Wei Wuxian, from the way they were immediately enamoured with each other upon first meeting to the way they both betrayed their own clans to protect the other to Wei Wuxian LITERALLY REWRITING THE LAWS OF NATURE TO SAVE WEN NING AND MAKING HIM INTO SOMETHING NEVER BEFORE SEEN-
They both saved and ruined each other. And yet never once does Wei Wuxian fear what his friend has become or regret saving him, never once does Wen Ning blame him or fear the fact his friend can turn him into a puppet with a mere whistle.
Their bond and trust in each other is unbreakable, their relationship is woven into the fabric of the entire story, in many ways they have defined each other's identity...
Bow down to our esteemed Hanguang-jun cuz in any other fandom, when faced against THAT, AO3 would be like "uuummm Lan Whoji?
