even if he was objectively guilty of every single crime levelled at him at any point in the narrative, the cumulative influence of jin guangyao's time as a spy for the sunshot forces during the war and his tenure as xiandu is still orders of magnitude more substantive, and positive, than anything else accomplished by any other named character in the text.
even if you believe he did every single foul thing he is accused of doing, he still saved the life of the gusu lan heir and ensured irreplaceable sect knowledge wasn't lost during the razing of the cloud recesses. he still killed literal tyrant and megalomaniac wen ruohan and ended a war. he still pushed through his watchtower program, which saved countless commoners' lives, and rooted out corruption in jinlintai to the point that no jin sect disciple would ever think about accepting a bribe in the city. he is the reason why wangxian get to fuck nasty on every surface of the cloud recesses post-canon--because jin guangyao used his influence to ensure the cloud recesses were rebuilt. he is the one who pulled nie huaisang's hands out of the fire after nie mingjue set all of his precious belongings on fire. he's the one who arranged to have those burn wounds tended to. he still built a temple in his mother's image and interred her body beneath guanyin so that all those prayers would go to meng shi, to grant her a better afterlife. he still gave fairy to jin ling.
even with the least charitable, worst faith interpretation of his character, these things remain true.
Between Xiao Zhan's cute face and the fact that mxy!wwx is a cute lil twink of a character, I often kind of forget that it was this guy☝️, The Yilling Laozu who told LWJ that he'd birthed A' Yuan himself. This guy.
The full comic is finally over!!! Thank you for following it ~
Xianle Quartet is a top tier polyship not only because of the metric ton of emotional baggage (and the sheer volume of sexual tension and awakening possible between 3 virgins and an effectively celibate fertility god), but also simply because they're all from a country renowned for beauty and pretentiousness, therefore treating impossible beauty standards as the norm.
Xie Lian's canon internal thoughts consist of not infrequently calling people ugly. Can we blame him? He was raised constantly surrounded by and continues to surround himself with devastatingly attractive people. Feng Xin, canonically olive-skinned and handsome, archer's figure. Mu Qing, canonically delicate-appearing and pretty. Hua Cheng, growing up to be tall and savagely beautiful.
Meanwhile, Hua Cheng is a literal fashionista, decked out in every possible silver accessory at any given moment, jingling like a Christmas elf and fabulous while doing it. He throws money around on luxury items just because he can, and his taste is impeccable. Mu Qing straight up destroys his own statues if they're ugly, literally described as wearing luxurious robes that he probably made himself because no one could do it better. They're the divas of this operation. They're judging you, hard, and they want you to know it, so you will.
Xie Lian is the equivalent of the naturally beautiful friend who doesn't wash their face with anything but a bar of soap and comes out looking flawless. He needs absolutely zero fashion sense because he could wear a trash bag and people would think it looks high fashion. Feng Xin is the himbo friend who washes with 10-in-1, yet his skin glistens in the sun like an oiled up ancient greek olympian. He does a normal amount of working out and comes out shaped like Captain America. They're simply God's Favorite, so they don't need to try.
Basically, I picture them as the blindingly hot polycule walking around like the Cullens entering their high-school cafeteria. Hair blowing in an invisible wind. Throwing incredible amounts of shade in the communication array.
They're hot. They're judgmental. They're literally the Mean Girls.
College teacher Lan Qiren who is always complaining about this loud, annoying and disruptive student in his class who is always half asleep on his desk and submits his assignments four seconds before the deadline.
His nephew Lan Wanji, who is in the same class, who can't believe how attracted he is to this hot mess of a man that seems to be physically incapable of not questioning every single subject they learn and makes such good points about them every time. How is it possible for a person seemingly can't dress, feed OR control himself in public be so smart? It would be less annoying if this dude at least took notes or had books, but no, he seems to be doodling on actual craft paper every time he peeks at him. Lan Wanji wants him carnally. And maybe romantically as well. He looks like a good cuddler, you know? Not that LWJ knows much about hugs and all that.
Meanwhile, there is college student, part time worker and full time single parent Wei Wuxian that is constantly running on two hours of sleep, who is working himself to the bone on his engineering degree along with Wen Qing (med student) to provide for Wen Yuan, chronically ill Wen Ning, ancient Granny and half a dozen old aunties and uncles that would (and should) have retired decades ago if they could afford it.
Now imagine the Lans' car breaking down in some speedy neighborhood after dining out, and who comes to the rescue? Just-got-out-of-work WWX, who would try his hand at the engine if they weren't shaking like crazy but assures them that his uncle four will get it going in a sec, want to follow him home so they are not in the street alone?
And so the Lans get to see this twenty years old exhausted young man get home, get immediately jumped by his toddler, and going to help with dinner while simultaneously checking over A-Yuan's homework, answering Grannie's questions about his day and helping WN with mobility exercises.
Lan Qiren becomes more forgiving. Lan Wanji falls in love and has to reconsider his own prejudices before approaching Wwx and asking him out on a study date that quickly becomes an engagement. Lan Xichen becomes besties with Granny and is there every Sunday. He and Wen Qing may fall in love. A-Yuan gets a whole new set of family members.
The car? It was actually fine. It just ran out of battery.
To understand Jiang Cheng is to understand that he's not the golden child or the scapegoat
Wei Wuxian is both of those
Wei Wuxian is Jiang Fengmian's Golden Child and Madame Yu's Scapegoat
But to both of them Jiang Cheng is simply the Failure
He isn't the son that his father wanted and he's not the son that his mother wanted
He can not live up to either of their wishes or desires because of who he is inherently. He is not charming or naturally exceptionally talented
He is smart and capable but he's not smart and capable enough for them
He puts in pure graft and commitment and gets only looked over or told how little it matters
It's not that he's to blame for anyone else's failures, it's that his accomplishments are meaningless and forgettable just like he is
And if you can't be loved for who you are a part of you wants to be hated because at least that means someone gives a damn
You wear your anger on your skin because it does hurt so much when you are rejected and it makes it harder to forget you
And god how badly you wish to at least be remembered
And you love your sibling who is both on a pedestal but being flogged for the honor
And you want to help and protect them but you also resent them
And they also resent you. At least a little
Because you have time without eyes on you
Time without constant scrutiny over your every action
Which is why the thing that holds the siblings together is the only parent they ever knew who truly loved them unconditionally: Jiang Yanli
Who of course was smothered under that love
"A boy who consumes cursed objects"
Oh suguru you would've loved Yuji 🤧
"And a boy who was blesses with a unique curse technique"
*a sketch requested by my patron--- Jiang Cheng with SanDu and ZiDian (my weapon spirit oc design) celebrating lunar new year :3
Finished volume 4, so heres the always cheerful Shi QingXuan
Jiang Cheng: *filming Wei Wuxian standing near the dinner table with a bottle of sake in his hands and a wine glass that’s getting suspiciously full* A-Niang finally agreed that Wuxian can join us at the adults table this New Years.
Yu Zuyuan: *head in hands* And he’s about to lose that privilege if he fills up that glass any higher.
Jiang Yanli: Oh come now, A-Xian, you don’t want to end up back at the kids table again, do you?
Jiang Cheng: Yeah, then you’ll be talking about Jin Ling’s latest playground drama, AND tipsy.
Wei Wuxian: *downs half the glass in one go* You know? I might just decide to hang out with them anyways. I could teach them how to trigger the microwave to set on fire every time Uncle uses the defrost button.
Jiang Fengmian: I knew you had something to do with that :/
Jiang Yanli: A-Xian, your husband is at the adults table this year.
Wei Wuxian: And my son is at the kids table. I’m torn, really. I can’t choose between them. If I told Lan Zhan we were leaving right this second if I couldn’t have them both at once-
Lan Wangji: *looking pained because he agreed to get along with the Jiang family this year* I… would agree to join you at the children’s table?
Jiang Cheng: Oh my god he’s such a simp 👁️👄👁️
Jin Zixuan: I’m not that bad… right?
Jiang Yanli: I don’t know, A-Xuan, I kind of want to join them there too.
Jin Zixuan: …okay…
Jiang Cheng: I’m both disgusted and impressed.
