kira nerys is such a funny character to me. imagine if your boss was also like a religious, holy figure that you personally believe in. but he doesn’t want to be a religious figure so you try to keep it low key. also he wants to play baseball with you.

have I mentioned in any sort of detail yet how creeped the fuck out I am by the way the Founder(’)s(’) treatment of Odo is just like…. textbook abusive? because it is MASSIVELY DISTURBING to watch, okay.

like. punishing him (for what is almost certainly a hypocritical crime), and then doing the “we forgive you. do you forgive us?” routine. CONSTANT constant “we love you and you’re a part of us and we want you back” talk. isolating him from anybody else because they’re not good enough and can’t give him what he needs and don’t understand him the way the other Founders do? fucking with his sense of time such that he neglects any other responsibilities. simultaneously belittling his reasons for not going back with them, and then acting like they absolutely deeply understand that single reason that they’ve half-made up. questioning and wearing down his stated boundaries about linking.

honestly the most freaky part was when Odo was defending his choice to link with the other Founder to Kira by talking about how he wouldn’t be letting any information slip about the new resistance, because linking isn’t a sharing of information, just like, existence or something. when the Founders had literally used the Link to engage in espionage a season ago by manipulating and planting information while Odo was joined to them. like. YIKES on bikes, massive gaslighting ahoy.

and you know what, in light of all this it kind of makes me… suspect that the purpose of launching marmalade children off into space all on their own isn’t just to gather knowledge to enrich the Link and the changelings’ understanding of the world, but also to create “sleeper agents”, enmeshed in non-Dominion cultures, who will be easily ripe for manipulation by the core population of Founders into betraying their adopted societies and advancing Dominion takeovers of new worlds. because the Founders know that changelings are feared and mistreated by solids. Odo himself certainly hasn’t been run out of town or anything; he has a pretty good position for himself - and even so, his primary caretaker as a child was Dr. Mora, who also was and continues to be abusive and manipulative to him. so his that case is at all typical in terms of who picks up and “raises” these baby changelings, what the Founders have done is basically created a population that comes to them already fucked up by their personal history, and easily vulnerable to re-victimization.

My Favorite Thing About Body Parts (s4e24) Is That Garak Was Obviously Never Going To Kill Quark. He

My favorite thing about Body Parts (s4e24) is that Garak was obviously never going to kill Quark. He just decides to spend an afternoon in the holosuites demonstrating his terrifying skills for kicks. Then he solemnly promises Quark that he will definitely kill him very soon –

And you never see him again in that episode. He just goes to the Replimat and orders a spice pudding and eats it while reading poetry or something.

Odo and Justice (based on early Season 2)

Odo is first introduced as DS9′s Chief of Security, a no-nonsense workaholic who is driven by his commitment to justice and isolated by his status as the only known shapeshifter in existence.

In S2E8 Necessary Evil, we learn that before he served as a detective on DS9 during Cardassian occupation, Bajorans sought him out to solve their small disputes because of his outsider viewpoint. During the early stages of his entrance to society, he was able to rely on this identity for himself. Justice was a way for him to participate in society and find a place where he belongs. It enabled him to gain respect that otherwise could be difficult to come by as a shapeshifter learning to act like a humanoid.

image

[Image description: A screenshot of Odo saying to Gul Dukat, “I suppose I’m considered a neutral observer.”]

His role as detective and arbiter enables his shapeshifting abilities to be something valuable rather than something that drives him apart from the rest of society. It helps unite the “other” and humanoid parts of him, although it still leaves him on the fringes of society (more on that later).

In S2E12 The Alternate, Odo meets a major challenge to his relationship with justice and, by extension, his identity. When Dr. Mora says that the creature who destroyed the lab and attacked Julian could be him, Odo panics and can’t accept it.

image

[Image description: A screenshot of Odo saying to Dr. Mora, “I do not commit criminal acts! It is not in my nature!]

If Odo has been unknowingly acting on the wrong side of justice, his entire worldview breaks down. If he is not the fair arbiter he considers himself to be, he loses everything he has built for himself in humanoid society.

This explains why he clings to the concept of justice so desperately. He can understand justice, and he can understand his place in society through justice. He depends on it to guide him, to provide stability and a framework for interaction with others—and a reason for others to need him.

However, this worldview holds him back. To continue being a “neutral observer,” he must continue being an outsider. He can only integrate into society up to a certain point because if he stops being the outcast, he stops being the “neutral observer.”

This may be one of the reasons for his emotional repression and his resistance to accepting appreciation and affection. He relies on maintaining that distance because, from early on, he was not only sensitive about his differences—he needed them. If he admits to himself that he wants something more than his job and justice, wants the acceptance and affection and vulnerability that come with being included in deeper social ties (even when others are happy to give it to him), his outsider status is disrupted. (This also makes his relationship with Kira interesting because he does seem to be willing to have a more emotional connection with her.)

What’s sad about this is that he doesn’t need to keep that distance…

(Basically S2E12 really struck something in me and I needed to get out my thoughts about Odo. Disclaimer that I’m only halfway through Season 2 so there are definitely layers of his character that I haven’t seen yet, but I’m really enjoying his character and am looking forward to more of his development and backstory!)

Guess who's getting graded on their DS9 fanart B)

Basically we're all making a board game and if designing game rules, cards, 3d figures, the board and the box doesn't burn the brain rot out of me, nothing might! I wanted to make a strategy board game about the Dominion conflict, however that game already exists, so mine will be simply focused on The Quickening episode, with more characters, more conflict and none of the important moral lessons about being able to save everyone. I'm already rambling about this too much, but those two are part of the role cards (You'll be able to pick between Bashir, O'brien, Dax, Kira and Ekoria, with each of them making some part of gameplay easier). I hope noone gets burnt out haha. Anyway, if anyone read it up to here, do you like the VHS effect or is it better without?

Enterprise Gothic (TOS edition)

It takes 430 crew to run the Enterprise. A landing party is sent out. It takes 429 crew to run the Enterprise.

Everyone keeps saying that your ship’s first officer is the best first officer in the fleet. It’s true that he’s very good at his job, but you’ve been keeping track and he’s tried to hijack the ship on at least three separate occasions so far. What the hell is going on with all the other first officers in the fleet, you wonder.

You order a chicken sandwich and coffee. You receive a plate of tribbles. This is different from every other time you’ve ordered a chicken sandwich and coffee, when you’ve received a plate of Play-Doh cubes.

Another landing party is sent out. It takes 428 crew to run the Enterprise.

You don’t even remember what chicken sandwiches and coffee taste like, and yet you keep ordering them anyway. One day, you hope, the replicator will deliver. Something other than those cubes. Something other than tribbles. You hope.

You wonder if it’s a sin against god to eat a tribble.

You wonder if god could even find you in space.

You find god in space.

The landing party fights him.

It takes 427 crew to run the Enterprise.

The first officer and the ship’s doctor are insulting each other on the bridge. This is how you know you’ve made it to safety.

The first officer and the ship’s doctor are working together as a coordinated team. This is how you know there is an imminent threat of absolute destruction.

There have been so many imminent threats of absolute destruction.

You find a chicken sandwich and coffee. It is almost definitely a mind trick conjured by an incredibly intelligent race of aliens millennia beyond human development.

The aliens want you to stop fighting. They do not give you the chicken sandwich or the coffee.

You’ve been en route to shore leave for six months. Strange things keep urgently diverting the ship along the way. You worry that you’ll be sent out in a landing party before you ever get your leave.

It takes 426 crew to run the Enterprise.
