This time, not by the white supremacist police force, but still because of racism.
Miguel was a 5 years old little boy from Recife, son of a domestic worker, who went to work with his mother.
Yes, his mother was still working as a domestic worker during a worldwide pandemic, just as MANY other women and black folks who have not been liberated of their non essential jobs in white and rich people’s homes.
Miguel’s mother left the apartment to walk her employer’s dogs, leaving her son behind with the apartment owners. The young child was scared and started crying for his mother. Somehow, he was so terrified he went after his mother, made his way to the elevator and ended up on the 9th floor where he fell from the great height. According to the investigators of the case, the apartment owner is responsible for allowing Miguel in the elevator as she is seen doing so in surveillance cameras.
His mother’s employer didn’t talk to the child. She didn’t comfort him. She didn’t keep an eye on him and protected him from going into an elevator by himself. He was neglected because she didn’t see him as a child. But how could she, if she didn’t even see his mother as human enough?
The media is hiding the apartment owners names. They are white, rich and, apparently, involved in politics in Recife. The woman who employed Miguel’s mother was taken by the police but has paid a 20k Reais (brazilian currency) bail out. Twenty thousand Reais. And they couldn’t pay Miguel’s mother her salary to allow her to stay home during COVID-19 pandemic?
This is what structural racism does. Slavery has never ended in the Americas, it just evolved into something that is “maskable”, “acceptable” and normalized.
We need visibility. We are done seeing black folks becoming statistic numbers. It is horrifying that we had to wait for USA to revolt against racism for white rich Brazilian folks to “decide they were anti racist too” and start talking about it more on social media.

His name was Miguel, he was 5 years old. Say his name.
Justice for Miguel. Justice for João Pedro. Justice for Marielle Franco. No justice, no peace.
hey is it gay to invite a woman you just met to spend the night, show her your many paintings of naked women, and then have dinner together out in a field

Adrien is the definition of a Nice Guy: says "M'Lady", gets mad when he's rejected, and can't take no for an answer, so instead he hounds the object of his "affections" despite her rejecting him over and over again, ignoring her when she says she just wants to be friends.
And people are falling for the "Romance" (Misogyny!) of this character and plot, hook, line, and sinker.
This is why calling out Adrien's behavior matters.
Real Life girls are being influenced by this show into thinking that Adrien's behavior is romantic, cute, and perfectly acceptable.
Real Life girls are being taught that a guy harassing you means he's in love with you, and that you should just give in and accept his feelings.
Real Life girls are being taught that endlessly pursuing a guy, that stalking, that stealing his phone, that memorizing his schedule, are all fine and dandy if it's 'for love'.
Miraculous Ladybug is a fun show aimed at kids, and young girls especially. Which is WHY the behavior being shown positively in the show matter so much, why people (rightfully) call how Adrien acts as Sexual Harassment--
Because that is what it is, even if sex is not mentioned or implied.
He's been officially sexually harassing her ever since she said she was in love with someone else, and just wanted to be friends-- and when he ignores her express wishes, and continues to pursue her, despite her many and continued, heated rejections. Adrien, in episode 3 of SEASON ONE, lied and said that he and Ladybug were in a relationship to a ma,n purely because he saw him as a potential rival for his affections, causing the man to be akumatized, and never apologized or told Marinette the truth about what happened.
Adrien's behavior is not okay.
Marinette has been stalking Adrien, stealing his possessions, memorized his schedule, and successfully lured his bodyguard away from him without Adrien's knowing, so she could ambush him into going on a date with her. Marinette has bullied and violently driven off any other girl that gets close to Adrien, since she sees them as competition for her affection. She doesn't want him to have female friends that isn't her (taken, dating someone already) BF.
Marinette's behavior is not okay.
If you've never considered the character's behavior in this way before, it's because that is by DESIGN. There have already been multiple instances of the crew in charge of ML sexualizing their characters, drawing porn of their children characters, racism, bigotry, and other disgusting things. Feel free to look at the "ML writers guillotine" tag for examples.
TL;DR, love the show, but be conscious of the messages it is spreading, and do your best to reduce the harm to the kids growing up consuming this world. Fiction impacts reality, especially when it's middle-aged white men directing shows aimed at young girls.
Say what you will about Japan Sinks: 2020 but telling us KITE was trans at the end was one hell of a power move.
