A su llegada a París, Sergio de Castro y Julio Cortázar descubrieron una de sus grandes pasiones comunes, la música y el jazz… 

“(…) la única música universal del siglo, algo que acercaba a los hombres más y mejor que el esperanto, la Unesco o las aerolíneas (…)  una música que permitía reconocerse y estimarse en Copenhague como en Mendoza o en Ciudad del Cabo, que acercaba a los adolescentes con sus discos bajo el brazo, que les daba nombres y melodías como cifras para reconocerse y adentrarse y sentirse menos solos rodeados de jefes de oficina, familias y amores infinitamente amargos, una música que permitía todas las imaginaciones y los gustos (…)  algo absolutamente indiferente a los ritos nacionales, a las tradiciones inviolables, al idioma y al folklore (…)  los reincorpora al oscuro fuego central olvidado, torpe y mal y precariamente los devuelve a un origen traicionado (…)” (Julio Cortázar, Rayuela)
