It’s sad how much of what is taught in school is useless to over 99% of the population.
There are literally math concepts taught in high school and middle school that are only used in extremely specialized fields or that are even so outdated they aren’t used anymore!
I’m a “late” PhD student and it’s the best decision I’ve ever taken.
Yes, everyone is younger than me. But this is my place, my time and my moment. Everyone has their speed and this is mine.
you’re not falling behind. you are still young and have a whole life ahead of you. you have enough time to explore things u love and experience your life and make your goals come true and find reasons to live. take things one day at a time and don’t let the fear of falling behind stop you because life isn’t a race.
my everlasting hunger for obtaining knowledge will never subside. my mind will forever be a bundled mess of complex messages ending with a simple question mark.
New gradblr here! PhD in maths and native catalan and spanish speaker.
Maybe I should post more things in catalan... The internet is too english predominant, it needs to change!

10.04.19 // went to a cafe this evening to get some vegan coffee cake before my first final but they were all out :( rip
It’s disturbing how often we go into the biographies of famous and revered men and find: he was a serial cheater; he was a sexual predator; he abused his wife and abandoned his children; or even simply–he never did an ounce of domestic labor, and relied on the servitude of the women around him to support his enlightened endeavors. These are kind of viewed as unfortunate blemishes on the oeuvre of an otherwise great man…“acceptable signs of wear,” so that we will still buy and endorse the product with no remorse. Now I’m all for learning great lessons no matter where they come from, and for learning about any person who has changed history, but we as a culture are right to have started a movement toward using these men’s behaviors to shine a critical light on their work. We should think critically about how these men’s misogyny, interpersonal callousness, and entitlement constitutes a fundamental flaw in their understanding of reality, and therefore a fundamental flaw in their overall thought. And we should keep asserting that women are not cannon fodder for men’s glories, and that we should not have an automatic “acceptable casualty” perspective when it comes to women.

Lissajous curves 😍
I remember learning about them fo the first time and thinking they were useless pretty curves, oh how wrong I was!
Now, to me they highlight the importance of resonances on dynamical systems and join number theory with differential equations while being hella cute
I love them
Be chaotic, and never know anything
Appearing like trenches dragged into the earth, sunken lanes, also called hollow-ways or holloways, are centuries-old thoroughfares worn down by the traffic of time. They’re one of the few examples of human-made infrastructure still serving its original purpose, although many who walk through holloways don’t realize they’re retracing ancient steps.

09.04.2019 I moved out last week and my new apartment is a mess, my room is filled with boxes and stuff (books mostly lol) I don’t even know where to store. But I’m really happy with my new home, it has a nice view over the city!
True. But at the same time I've been struggling with this concepts when it comes to friends.
I have the tendency to put a lot of effort into my friendships even when I receive nothing in exchange. I found the line between being a good friend and being taken advantage impossible to see.
Maybe I just have to learn to work for my applause?

Don’t know how people deal with rough days when they can’t be surrounded by all their favourite things. It’s the only thing that’s getting me through.
RESONANCES! They affect everything!
Every 11 years, the Sun cycles through from riotous flare and sunspot activity to a quieter period, before ramping up again. It’s almost as regular as clockwork, and for years astronomers have been wondering what causes it. Now, they’ve proposed a new solution.
Even though the Solar System’s planets are much smaller than the Sun, the gravity of some of them is able to influence our star’s magnetic field. This, the researchers assert, is what controls the solar cycle.
Venus, Earth, and Jupiter assert a small gravitational tug on the Sun as they orbit it. The result is comparable to the way the Moon’s gravity influences Earth’s tides, producing a regularly timed ebb and flow.
The team has traced back 1,000 years of solar cycles, between the years 1000 and 2009 CE, comparing that data against the movements of the planets in that time. They found an impressively strong link between the two.
“There is an astonishingly high level of concordance: what we see is complete parallelism with the planets over the course of 90 cycles,” said physicist Frank Stefani of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf in Germany.
“Everything points to a clocked process.”
What the team found is that the tidal forces are strongest when Earth, Venus, and Jupiter align, and that this alignment occurs every 11.07 years - falling at the same time as the solar minimum.

when simone de beauvoir said “i’m reliving it, neutralizing it, and transforming it into an inoffensive past that i can keep in my heart without either disowning it or suffering from it. that’s not easy. it’s at once painful and poetic.”
“Do you want to talk about it or be distracted from it” is honestly the best thing you can say to me when I say im sad/in pain etc.
