Hubble Space Telescope

You’ve probably heard of our Hubble Space Telescope, but have you had the chance to actually take a look at the amazing images it has captured for us over the years? Since Hubble launched in April 1990, it has made more than 1.2 million observations, some to locations more than 13.4 billion light years from Earth!

Hubble can see astronomical objects with an angular size of 0.05 arc seconds, which is like seeing a pair of fireflies in Tokyo from your home in Maryland…yea, that’s pretty far! This accuracy allows us to see images like this one of Little Gem Nebula, roughly 6,000 light-years away from us.

Images from Hubble are regularly released to the public, and are some of the most breathtaking views in the Universe. Images like this one of Lagoon Nebula, in the constellation of Sagittarius, not only make for amazing desktop screen-savers, but provide us with valuable scientific information about distant stars and galaxies, as well as the planets in our solar system.

We recently celebrated Hubble’s 25th Anniversary, and look forward to many more years of discovery and captivating images.

Book Cover Challenge

My goal is to make ten unique book covers over the next few months using a variety of techniques. Here’s some of the elements and styles I want to cover (no pun intended).

Symbolism

The Children’s Home is a book a modern day fairy tale involving disfigured boy and and the mysterious, magical events that happen as more children join him in his sprawling estate. This cover does a great job showing the magic of the story and piquing the readers’ interest.

Typography

Being creative with typography can sometimes be a challenge for me. I want to exercise my typographic muscles by doing a few covers that focus on hand-drawn or modified type.

Retro/Vintage

I love vintage sci-fi book covers. Some of them, like this vintage Isaac Asimov book, have a timeless style that I’d like to capture.

Fun Photoshop

Using photo editing to create a strange and wonderful cover like this one of Han Kang’s The Vegetarian that captures the essence of the story.

Illustrated Story

I’m working on a special project over the next three months. I’ll be turning a short story of mine into an illustrated novella.

My goal is to combine my talents in illustration, writing, and design to create an expressive reading experience. I want there to be unity between art and text.

The main challenge will be to make the artwork useful for storytelling and to make it subdued enough to direct the reader's eyes around the page while minimizing distraction or interrupting their reading flow.
