Numerous patriotic quotes are circulating on social media in the aftermath of the horrific attack on the US Capitol. Following the sage wisdom of my brilliant and inspiring AP US History teacher Terry Pollack, I sought primary sources to verify and provide context to these statements attributed to Teddy Roosevelt.
Source: President Teddy Roosevelt, Lincoln and Free Speech, Metropolitan Magazine, May 1918 (v.47 no.6), From the HathiTrust Digital Library, essay here.
Source: Sedition, a Free Press, and Personal Rule, editorial by Teddy Roosevelt, Kansas City Star, 5/7/1918. Online here.
Our nation’s history is one of protest, fighting for rights, and continually striving to form a “more perfect union.” Two of our current exhibits, Records of Rights, and Rightfully Hers: American Women and the Vote, highlight records documenting historic struggles. However, such challenges to and questioning of the government, especially of the President, are often seen as unpatriotic or even treasonous. As the highlighted quotes above show, Teddy Roosevelt responded strongly to such accusations.
Teddy Roosevelt stated that far from being unpatriotic, it is one’s patriotic duty to oppose a president whose policies put Americans in harm’s way. At the time, the US was both embroiled in World War I and dealing with a pandemic. Teddy Roosevelt adamantly supported the war, and even wanted to serve despite his age and failing health, but criticized President Woodrow Wilson for not playing a bigger role on the European war front. Wilson responded by trying to quash all criticism through Sedition Act of 1918 that criminalized any “disloyal, profane, scurrilous, or abusive language” about the U.S. government or military.

While the records above from President Teddy Roosevelt are not from the National Archives, we do hold records of government efforts to foster “patriotic spirit” including the original Declaration of Independence. and thousands of military recruitment posters, some more effective than others, including this one:
“Like mighty Niagara’s torrents is the strong surge of our patriotism.”

I found this very interesting!
If you've read Hugo's book or seen any other adaptation of Esmeralda you've most likely noticed that she always has either black or brown eyes.
So why does Disney's Esmeralda have green eyes?
Why would they make her eyes green when in the book it specifically states that her eyes are black?
The answer is simple and there are a couple of reasons why Disney made this bold decision.
In the book,Esmeralda got her name from the necklace that she always wore. This necklace had a large green emblem that resembled an emerald.
However,Disney's Esmeralda doesn't have this necklace.
So instead, they gave her emerald green eyes. This was done in order to justify her name.If her eyes were black, and she didn't have her green necklace-there would be no point in her being named Esmeralda.
Disney is well known for their colourful and memorable character designs.Esmeralda is no exception.
She was designed in such a way that makes her stand out.Apart from Clopin,Esmeralda is the most vibrant and colourful character in the movie.
Moreover,in case you hadn't noticed,Esmeralda is the only character in the movie who has green eyes.Even Quasimodo's eyes are a mixture of blue and light green, but still lean more towards the colour blue.
So Esmeralda is the only character with green eyes. This was done to make her stand out,as well as to make her design even more colourful and hard to forget.
I don't really know if Disney did this intentionally or not,but it would make perfect sense if Esmeralda's eyes were green, considering the time and story she's in.
The story of the Hunchback of Notre Dame takes place in the 15th century France.More specifically in 1482.
Back then, green eyes were seen as evil and a sign of witchcraft and sorcery.
So it makes perfect sense for Esmeralda to have green eyes, since she is seen as a witch and sorceress by Frollo.
Not only would she be seen as a witch and a demon because of her Romani background and her shameful dances, but also because of her green eyes.
So yeah,i don't know if this was intentional or not,but it's certainly an interesting concept to think about.
Absolutely stunning!!!
