do you think the force tried to warn him
The tragedy of Daemon Targaryen is this: the only language he knows for love is violence.
In “King of the Narrow Sea,” we learn that Viserys believes Daemon was their mother’s favorite. Daemon was always sneaking off to win tournaments. Daemon was the great warrior, and Viserys wasn’t. That difference between the boys earned him the larger share of Alyssa’s love, though Daemon demurs, uncharacteristically, when Viserys tells this story.
Daemon often feels pushed aside by those who should love him, chiefly Viserys. But he learned young that love is earned by skill. Love is a boon granted because of what you can do. Daemon is a weapon that he has forged himself. He makes himself the sword.
I’ll purge the city of criminals for you. I’ll go to war for you, and win that war without your help. I’ll kill my wife for you. I’ll defend you. I’ll cut down those who aim to smear you. I will put myself between you and yours and the danger that lurks outside. I will strike the first blow so the harm I fear will befall you never comes. I will only barely be reined in, and only by your word.
(And yes, some of it is pride, some of it is glory. But what is glory if not the admiration of others? What is pride if not the love you set aside for yourself?)
There is love in Daemon Targaryen. Like most characters of his ilk, he appears to feel all of his emotions very strongly, and love is no exception. It is sometimes in gestures, it is hardly in words. It is all in action, action, action.
In the end, Daemon dies fighting.

TARGARYEN WEEK Day 6: Favorite Family Dynamic - THE GREAT BASTARDS
While on his deathbed, Aegon legitimized his bastards and placed them in his line of succession after his firstborn, Daeron II.
Daemon Blackfyre
Daemon I Blackfyre, born Daemon Waters, was the bastard son of Princess Daena Targaryen and King Aegon IV Targaryen. Daemon when denied Princess Daenerys he rose up and swayed half the kingdom to support his claim to the Iron Throne against King Daeron II in a war called the Blackfyre Rebellion. He was the first and greatest of the Blackfyre Pretenders.
Aegor ‘Bittersteel’ Rivers
Ser Aegor Rivers, often called Bittersteel, was a renowned knight. In the First Blackfyre Rebellion, Aegor sided with Daemon against King Daeron II. Bittersteel fled Westeros after Daemon’s death at the end of the rebellion to the Free City of Tyrosh. Aegor founded the Golden Company, a famous mercenary organization, to stop the loss of support for the Blackfyres.
Brynden 'Bloodraven’ Rivers
Lord Brynden Rivers, called “Lord Bloodraven”. Brynden was a Targaryen loyalist during the Blackfyre Rebellions, the Hand of Aerys I and Maekar I Targaryen, and Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch. Shiera Seastar, another bastard of Aegon IV, was his mistress. His half-brother Aegor “Bittersteel” Rivers desired Shiera also, which served in increasing the enmity between the two. Bloodraven was thought to be a sorcerer. He disappeared while ranging beyond the Wall in 252 AC. He is discovered to be The Three-Eyed Raven by Bran Stark.
Shiera Seastar
Shiera Seastar was the last of the Great Bastards of King Aegon IV Targaryen. Shiera never married, but took many lovers, and numerous duels were fought for her favor. Her half-brother Brynden Rivers repeatedly proposed marriage to her. Although she refused to marry him, she did share her bed with him.Her other half-brother Bittersteel, was said to have also desired her, which only served to increase the hatred between Bloodraven and Bittersteel. There were rumors that she bathed in the blood of maidens to retain her beauty.
One day we need to have a legitimate discussion on how Jace and Luke weren’t even bullies and how Aegon was Aemonds biggest torturer. And that day is today.
- Alicent herself knew this was true. “You may cuff him about as you wish at home, but in the world we must defend our own” she says after trying to frame Jace and Luke as “savages.”
-Alicent refers to Jace and Luke as Aegons “playthings” in the same scene. What kind of power dynamic do you really think was at play here? Aegon clearly liked to toy with his vastly younger nephews and influenced them.
- Mind you, Jace and Luke were 5-7 years old and NOT aware of the feud that ran in their frayed family. They lack the awareness of characters like Aemond and Aegon who are repeatedly reminded by Alicent that Rhaenyra’s family is a THREAT and that they are bastards who are beneath them in station.
-In contrast, there is not a single scene of Rhaenyra speaking about Aegon, Aemond, or Helaena in derogatory ways to her children. Even in the books, it’s evident that the feud between the children is entirely one-sided with the Greens growing up and *learning* to resent Jace, Luke, and Joff.
-the teasing in and of itself was so mild. What makes Aemond upset is that he doesn’t view Jace and Luke as his equals.
-to Jace and Luke, this was normal teasing. From Aemonds perspective, he’s being emasculated by younger boys who he views as sub-human and unworthy despite having dragons of their own because he’s been TOLD and ASSURED that they’re bastards.
- THIS IS WHY THE TEASING ACTUALLY SETS HIM OFF, NOT THE SEVERITY. Need we be reminded how strongly Aemond feels about “blood purity”? In a show about the Targaryen dynasty, he’s the only character to mention it.
Bonus:
- Aegon hating and wanting to tease Aemond is so on brand for them as characters. Aemond is a momas boy and Aegon is the disappointment. The allure to make his life hell is there.
happy ides of march to julius caesar and jared padalecki!
