Summary:  High Fantasy/Science Fiction AU.

The cot looked like a death trap. It was held together by a bunch of leather straps connected to a metal frame. Even with a mattress put on top it looked like a torture device.

“If I die in the night, I will come back to haunt you,” Wei Wuxian said, eyeing it.

“It is not for you,” Lan Wangji said.

“What? I’m a prisoner. Of course I’m taking the cot.”

“You are a guest and you are taking the bed.”

“I’m not taking the bed. Come on, I can’t let you sleep on that. If you die everyone will blame me.”

“I will not die.”

My comments:  Beautiful story: kind of a mesh between space/fantasy/urban fantasy AUs. Wei Wuxian is an Army deserter (they’d non-consensually made him into a werewolf and then mind-controlled him for 2 years for a bit of additional fuckery) and has been on the run for 3 years when a vortex opens in front of him. Wei Wuxian jumps in, because he is the kind of man who takes leaps. He exits into a circle of mages, one of whom is quietly thrumming with a heartsong that is making his wolf go absolutely bananas.

So he settles into this new world, where magic is real and no one’s heard about the Federation. (Well, he settles in after they let him out of their dungeon.) He’s Lan Wangji’s charge, which is just fine by him. He keeps his wolf side secret, and just learns about this new place and the new people and gets to know his beautiful and intriguing roommate well enough to read micro-expressions.

There’s a mystery, and some danger, and Wei Wuxian gets to divest Lan Wangji of his virginity (which is absolutely gorgeous), after which the mystery situation comes to a head and somehow Wei Wuxian gets sent back across the… universe, alternate dimensions, he really doesn’t know… to the bleak reality he’d only just escaped.

Excerpt: “I like watching you [get ready in the morning],” Wei Wuxian said.

Lan Wangji cut him a look that seemed more surprised than angry. “Why?”

Wei Wuxian shrugged, making the covers slip down his chest. “You look more human in the morning.”

Lan Wangji blinked at that. “I’m always human.”

“I know.”

Lan Wangji’s eyebrows drew together slightly. Wei Wuxian struggled for a way to explain himself.

“You’re less perfect in the morning. Sometimes your hair is even tangled.”

Lan Wangji’s hands flew to his hair.

“Not now,” Wei Wuxian said impatiently. “Just sometimes.”

Lan Wangji stared at him, then it seemed to occur to him that Wei Wuxian was barely dressed because his gaze dropped to his chest for a moment before being wrenched away.

“You’re weird,” he said, seemingly with as much dignity as he could muster, which was more dignity than Wei Wuxian had mustered in his entire life.

“I know,” Wei Wuxian said, unconcerned.

Lan Wangji’s eyes narrowed into perfect crescents, the way they did when he was smiling internally, and Wei Wuxian congratulated himself on a morning well spent. It was worth every bit of discomfort waking at 5-hour brought him if he could make Lan Wangji almost-smile.

Something I noticed upon re-watching TUA is that other than Luther who stuck around the longest and was the most obedient, Vanya was the closest to Reginald. He made an effort to separate her from her siblings, excluding her from that group, but in doing so actually brought her closer to himself.

In nearly every single Umbrella Academy flashback, Vanya is standing right beside Reginald and above the others. In the bank heist scene, Vanya is on a rooftop beside Reginald and above the others. In the staircase race scene, Vanya is at the top of the staircase beside Reginald and above the others (who are literally racing each other to get to their level). Even in the tattooing scene, although she’s not with Reginald, she’s again on a staircase above her siblings.

Reginald’s dialogue is telling her (and the audience) that Vanya is “nothing special” and less than her siblings, but the imagery is contradictory. Vanya is constantly framed above the others and almost as Reginald’s equal. I could not find a single shot where any other kid is standing right beside Reginald like that, they’re always framed below him, across from him, and/or far away. Even Luther is always standing facing Reginald with the desk (a symbol of his work separating him from humanizing the kids) between them. Vanya is the only one who is ever on the other side of that desk (metaphorically speaking).

This may also explain why Vanya is the only one who seems genuinely sad about Reginald’s death. Luther is obsessed with looking for answers, Allison’s reaction we don’t really see except being overwhelmed and flustered because of how she heard (at the funeral she seems indifferent to his death, she plays peacekeeper between the siblings), Klaus and Diego are openly hostile, and Five is indifferent about it - but Vanya is the only one whose reaction is outwardly sad. The camera also lingers on Vanya’s reaction for much longer than the others implying that her feelings about Reginald are more important or at least more complex. We get Vanya initially hearing the news and having a one line reaction, as all the other siblings do, but then Vanya is the only one who gets an extra shot just to show how she feels about Reginald’s death. We get this lingering shot of Vanya crying on the bus. She is the only one who we see cry about Reginald being dead. 

We don’t see it explicitly but I imagine that Reginald and Vanya had more one-on-one moments than the other siblings did. We see her being the one standing next to him and writing on a clipboard which implies that he used her as a sort of personal assistant. That her job involved being close to him and doing menial things like timing her siblings’ races or taking notes. This sort of position would not only keep Vanya further from her siblings (the main objective), but also keep her closer to Reginald. He would have wanted to keep Vanya closer to him to keep her controlled and isolated. There’s also the fact that Pogo makes a point of telling Vanya, and only Vanya, that Reginald “loved her very much, in his way” which is gross and abuse apologist of him to say, but it is does add to the evidence that Reginald was, in some messed up way, closer to Vanya than to the others and again emphasizes the importance of that dynamic.

Thinking further about the idea that Vanya evidently spent more one-on-one time with Reginald than the others, I wonder if that’s part of why they were so mad at her about the book. Obviously, they were partially mad she wrote about them being assholes to her and calling them out on their bullshit, but what if she revealed things about their father that no one else knew? I hope this dynamic gets explored more in Season 2 because I think it’s very interesting this strange sort of respect Reginald seemed to have for Vanya because of her power despite being afraid of it and trying to smother it.

Make Some Pocket Extenders for Your Pants

So I don’t know about you, but I’m often frustrated by the ridiculous smallness of girls’ pockets. At a bare minimum, I need to be able to shove my cellphone in there - come on, pants companies! So what I started doing was making myself pocket extenders. I’ve done this several times, for pants and shorts. It’s great.

I just got this pair of jeans, so I thought I’d show you how to do it. I kind of feel like it just hasn’t occurred to some of you that this is an option, so maybe now it will. All you need is your pants, some fabric (I just took a random piece from a scrap bin), a needle, and some thread (thread doesn’t even need to match the fabric since literally no one will see it).

See? Ridiculous. Like, half a cellphone, or only 2.5″. Useless.

 So turn those inside out to expose the pockets.

Figure out how big you want your pockets to actually be. I kinda go by whatever looks like might be right. I didn’t really measure them. Fold the fabric in half, so you have a pocket, and then fold it in half again so you can have two equal ones.

Try to get the edges to line up enough, pin it in place, then sew up the sides! Are your stitches crazy uneven and wonky looking? Doesn’t matter; nobody’s going to see it. These are in the inside of your pants. The only thing that matters is that it holds up. So I double-did the corners, since those tend to get the most stress.

Cut open the bottom of the existing pockets.

Pin it in place, then sew around, joining the new pocket to the old pocket. I did this by keeping my hand on the inside, so I wouldn’t accidentally sew through the other side. Again, I reinforced the corners, and didn’t worry about what it actually looks like. Then I turned it in side out to make sure the inside was all joined properly.

Yay all done! And the pockets are so much bigger now!

Whaaaat I can fit my entire phone and entire hand and probably something else now, are girls’ pockets even allowed to do that?! Heck yeah they are.

I personally owe a great deal to fanfic writers, especially in the Merlin fandom, for they helped me get through a very hard period of my life. Fanfic writers have been and are constant companions of my life, whether I’m sad, happy, tired or feeling excited, they always deliver, they are amazing people who do an amazing work just because they like it. I admire the hell out of any of you, and the following ten titles, plus the special and honorable mentions, are me trying to tell you how much you mean. Very, very long post incoming …
