She didn’t understand this land, not at all. Monsters and elves were far easier to understand than things like cars and headphones. What she did understand was the way her mother’s hand felt in hers,  how things would eventually be alright. Yennefer would die than let anything hurt Ciri. The blonde knew this like she knew her own heartbeat. A comforting, ever-there weight.

“You sound too much like Uncle Vesemir. You might just summon him with those words,” She smiled. Zireael had been a comfort she clung to her first few nights in this town, quite literally. It was proof that everything had happened, that she still had her family, somewhere out there. In a strange world with things she didn’t understand, the sword she knew as an extension of her own body was her solace. “Not a Witcher yet. Never, if Father gets his way.”

Ciri nodded, listening intently. Five months. Yennefer had been without her and Geralt for five whole months. “I’m surprised you haven’t burned the place down. I never thought you would ever work for anyone, the Council included.”

image

⊱ ──────────── {⋆⌘⋆} ──────────── ⊰

Everything about this town left Yennefer cold, the kind of chill that sank into her bones and stayed there despite any effort to chase it away. Holding onto Ciri was the first touch of warmth she had felt in months. She would do anything imaginable to keep that warmth from slipping from her grasp.

“Could you imagine? I think the sight of a lightbulb would be far too much for him to process,” the idea of the grumpy witcher trying to navigate technology was extraordinarily amusing. “You’ll get there in time, daughter. He just wants to make sure you’re safe, it's a dangerous job after all. Takes years of training. To be without you is a fate unimaginable to either of us. But your work will pay off, I know it will.”

She did know. The Ciri of her time was a bit farther down The Path, and was shaping up to be quite the formidable opponent. From what she could discern, there was no Path to be found here, but she wouldn't be the one to tell Ciri not to practice. They neared the bed and breakfast before long, having been close to it to begin with. “Ah, yes. I had given up on employment in my late thirties, but one must make sacrifices when trying to get the things they want, my dear.”

Jenny was enjoying the outing to the school for the most part, but it also felt a little pointless. They weren’t going to learn anything new about the mysteries of the research center by accompanying them on an educational trip, except for how they twisted and trimmed (only their most innocent) research into easy, bitesize chunks for children to understand.

It was fun though, talking to the kids, encouraging their curious minds and telling them that they should get involved in science. With the first group of students finished, and the second group not for another hour, Jenny retreated to the break room for a breather. They had been looking through the tray of teas, almost about to select the green one, when they heard the curling haired woman telling them to choose the blue.

Jenny plucked it out of the tray and turned to give her a grin.

“Thanks, I appreciate it,” she said, dropping the tea bag into a mug and pouring hot water from the kettle over it. “I’m Jenny, with the research center. I’m guessing you’re faculty at this prestigious learning establishment?”

River waved a hand in a ‘don’t mention it’ fashion, and smiled at her. She was happy to save anyone (except the very annoying art teacher) the pain of that very nasty excuse for tea. The comment on the prestige of the school made her have to stifle a laugh.

“I wouldn’t go that far, but yes I am. River Song, and I teach year eight history and advanced history. Pleasure to meet you Jenny. Everyone seems to be buzzing about your little demonstration already… though, that could just be because the students get to escape class for half the day.” She paused, setting her pen down, “Sorry, I didn’t mean to be rude. I just meant that it's to be expected from teenagers. I’m sure it's a lovely presentation.” She hadn’t had the time to watch the first presentation due to her large stack of papers.

Jaskier chuckled, “Judging on how we met, I thought I’d be dead by now and it is quite surprising how that has turned around. Quite recently, I might add and honestly it’s so much easier to get along with you when i’m drunk”. The bard picks up his lute and starts to pick the strings gently and with precision, although fumbling on a couple of notes as the spirits he’s been drinking go to his head. “Fuck, this shit used to be easy”

Nodding in amused agreement, the mage lifted her cup a bit in a silent toast to the sentiment, before she took a little drink. “What can I say, bard? I’m full of surprises.”

She watched him play with the instrument, snorting a little laugh each time he messed up the notes. She knew he was talented at it, even if she would never tell him as much. “So much for being a professional. Or maybe you simply cant handle your liquor.” She was teasing, but she wasn’t really one to talk as she could barely handle it herself. “Are you going to make everyone suffer through another tune, or are you feeling merciful on my ears?”

⌘Midna & Zelda Hylia⌘

⌘Midna & Zelda Hylia⌘

@ofmvoonlight

Midna loved spending time with people— always had. Being alone was never quite her thing, not that it was really an option growing up in the castle. Even as an adult, she busied herself with company and spending time with others.

More often than not her urge to find people to pass the time with led to her going to them. It was typically easier for both parties that way, as Midna didn’t have a job to keep her tied to a schedule like most of her friends did. It was a rarity anyone ever made it back to her own apartment, which was a shame considering how nice it was. Despite her unemployment status, Midna was far from strapped for cash. She had a hefty amount in a savings account which allowed for her to do whatever she pleased in comfort.

Midna never hesitated in sharing that comfort from her friends when she could and when they would allow. It's why she invited Zelda over for what she heard people around here call a ‘girls night’. She knew her fellow princess had been having a time lately, and figured she could use a bit of cheering up.

Luckily for Zelda, Midna considered herself a professional at brightening people’s moods.

When she heard the knock at her front door, she cheerfully bounded over to open it. “Hey Zelds! You made it! Glad you were able to find the place alright.”

Dorcas grinned. Not from earth? That made it all far more interesting. She was instantly curious about the plant and the project that Sam’s customer was working on, but she knew it would be unprofessional for her to ask for too many details (and unprofessional for him to give them).

“Very interesting,” she said demurely, waving her wand above his hand, muttering a spell underneath her breathe. She listened to it hum, and then tucked it away in her pocket again.

“I can definitely fix you up,” she said with a smile. “Oh, the Shire? Sounds like an interesting place. And you can say I’m not quite human either, being a witch, but it’s sort of complicated I guess.” Dorcas was very much enjoying talking to Sam. “What’s the Shire like?”

image

⊱ ──────────── {⋆⌘⋆} ──────────── ⊰

Sam had been intrigued by the concept of magic ever since he was a lad. He had heard tales from all sorts– his Gaffer, Master Bilbo, Ted Sandyman, they all had a story to tell about elves from long ago, or the wandering wizard who came through the Shire to put on magnificent firework displays. Even after seeing it for himself, he remained infatuated.

“It's quite an interesting place, miss,” he smiled, that fond, slightly melancholy one that only came about when he thought of home. “It's beautiful. Acres of farmlands and wild fields. Little dots of light through windows when it's dark out. We don’t have houses in the typical sense. They’re built into the hills, for the most part, though we have one story buildings too. Some of the fields are plowed clear, and we’ll have parties or festivals, open for all… sorry, got lost in the thought for a moment. What about you? Are you from this place?”

“Earth isn’t so different from the continent. Sure there are new kingdoms to learn about including this ‘Wales’ that we live in, although why anyone would name their kingdom after a large sea animal I don’t know” Jaskier smiled softly he didn’t know how to respond about Geralt, finding out that he was forgotten burned to the bard’s core, It killed him on the inside.

“Not solely yours, no.” Jaskier dipped his head

Yennefer chuckled, having to steady her drink to stop it from spilling. It was one of the first actual laughs she had in a few weeks now. Jaskier had a penchant for making the smallest remarks the funniest (and the alcohol helped a little, too). Shaking her head, a little smile still on her mouth, she sighed.

“Well, damn him! He’s done nothing but cause us strife since his stupid white-haired head popped back up. I say we try and make some happiness of our own. No witchers necessary.” It was a nice sentiment, and one Yennefer would love to hold onto, but when the alcohol cleared from her mind she would know that simply couldn’t work. But just for the night, she would hold onto it. She held her drink out to toast with him on it.

“Say what you will about this sphere-- their liquor far surpasses most of the grog you find on The Continent. I’ll give them that much,” Yennefer said before she took a sip of her fruity cocktail.

“I can talk about him for hours and never grow tired of it” Zelda smiled. “His name is Link and we are bound together in a way. We die in one timeline and come back in another but we always find each other. We never stay too far away from one another and that is the greatest comfort I have ever experienced. His duty was to keep me and my kingdom safe from evil. Along the way it just seems like we both fell madly in love. Took us a while to finally admit it out loud. From my part it was out of fear of being rejected”

“And when it comes to me. Well I used to be a princess but now I am a model. I am a huge animal lover and I also love long showers and walks in the woods. In a way it soothes me from the confusion of this town”

image

⊱ ──────────── {⋆⌘⋆} ──────────── ⊰

No matter how many strange things he had seen, the tales which some members of Sallow Hills had to offer still managed to leave Sam a bit taken aback. Right, so reincarnation was a thing. Mental note on that one.

“That really is a slow burning love story if I’ve ever heard one. I’m afraid you’ve got me beat,” he chuckled. He knew a thing or two about that sort of fear, so he could hardly hold it against her for waiting so long (not that Sam was the type of person to do such a thing). They certainly looked the part of a princess; they had the same kind air around them as the Lady Arwen did, though he wasn't completely sure if she was an actual princess or not. “Princess? Well that surely does fit you, doesn't it.”

He smiled, one kind yet tinged with a sadness, “Walks in the woods have always done me good, even before I came here. But I have heard some strange tales about the one surrounding town.” Sam didn’t remark on his own experience with the not-so-friendly forest he had been in before; he didn’t think there was a bouncy man in a funny coat living in this forest, either, so he left that out as well. “If I’m being honest, it gives me the creeps sometimes, but it offers some interesting flora to study, so I make trips to it anyway”

Listening to Sam talk about his job, Zelda smiled to herself. Sometimes they didn’t know how to cope with the fact that here in Sallow they were surrounded with people that cared for her and loved her. Back home in Hyrule she had to take care of herself, protect herself and be there for herself. That was until they met Link and everything just changed for the better.

This town had not only given her a sense of belonging but also given her the greatest gift of all; Link. Being able to be with him and actually be his was everything to Zelda. It had been a dream for so many years but now it was reality. Now they could kiss his lips and hold his hand, tell him that she loved him and sleep in his arms.

They were finally content. “Well I am happy that you have someone at work willing to help you. You deserve a helping hand”

image

⊱ ──────────── {⋆⌘⋆} ──────────── ⊰

As Sam continued his work with the vegetables, he nodded a soft smile to them. Maybe it wasn’t perfectly ideal to be in this town alone, but he was making do. The Shire would always be his true home, but Sallow Hills would do. He would make it so.

“Thank you Zelda,” he hummed, careful not to catch his fingers under the knife. “It's nice to have some more time to myself, even if there's nobody to share it with.” He said it, still with a little smile on his face, but it did make his chest ache a little to know there was no Frodo or Rosie here to share his time with. He missed them greatly, though he talked about them little. It hurt too much to stir up those feelings.

Changing the subject, he went on, “You know, I remembered something last night that I hadn't been able to the day before.”

“I do not have any right to say how you feel or dictate the outcome of this situation. But I do have say in my part in this. The last thing I want to do is cause more hurt. I just don’t know what to do because I do not want to torment you with the fact that my memories are not intact. I do not want to look into those gorgeous eyes and see anger and resentment. I don’t want to stay away. I don’t want this to be our first and last encounter in this town. But if needed be, I will at least try to give you the space you need”

That’s all he could do at the moment. Geralt couldn’t give Yennefer empty promises of a better tomorrow when everything was still up in the air. He couldn’t pretend to know what was going on because that would only end up coming back to haunt him. He wished there was a book somewhere that could tell him how to cope with what was currently happening. How to cope with crushing someone’s heart without even trying.

“You have not disturbed me one bit. That kiss? It was glorious” he felt a small smile form on his lips as he nodded. “I just have too much respect for you to kiss you back right now. Once my memories are back I shall give you what you seek”

image

⊱ ──────────── {⋆⌘⋆} ──────────── ⊰

Yennefer’s gaze finally met his. He was not met with anger or resentment, or anything at all. She wouldn’t let him have the satisfaction of seeing his affect on her, if she could help it. Now that she was collecting herself, it was becoming a little easier. She sighed, dropping her head for a moment to fully collect herself, before picking it back up.

“I don’t need space, and I don’t want it to be our only encounter, either; at least we can agree on that.” Eyes roving his face, Yennefer’s mind was racing as she tried to find an answer for him. She couldn’t give him one. Taking a step back, antsy hands re-tied the belt on her coat, looking for anything else to occupy them beside reaching out to touch him again.

“I’ve been told such things before, but the person saying it is usually much more desperate than you seem to be,” it was a weak attempt at a joke. “Is that a promise, then, witcher?” Yennefer didn’t know what she was supposed to do or say. She didn’t define herself by men, never had, but it was unnerving to think for the first time in over half a century, she didn’t have the safety net of Geralt to fall back on any longer.

The lock of the door made a soft click as Ciri stepped inside, not daring to make a sound louder than that. It would break the fragile calm she had pieced together, causing her heart to shatter. Being transported to this town had already made her brittle, deep cracks spidering out from the center. Geralt had taken a hammer to that heart of glass, Ciri keeping it- and herself- together by sheer willpower.

The soft sounds of the television caught her attention, turning to find Yennefer on the couch. For the second time that day, Ciri wanted to scream. She caught her mother’s gaze, mouth opening in an attempt to speak. When words escaped her, she shut it again. Anger and despair tore through her body, ripping her psyche in two. Ciri squeezed her eyes shut, knowing she couldn’t be looking at her mother when she spoke.

“Did you know?”

image

⊱ ──────────── {⋆⌘⋆} ──────────── ⊰

Fuck. She knew. Yennefer didn’t have to ask what Ciri was talking about. It had only been three days since she had found Geralt, if found was the right word for it. She had wanted to tell Ciri, but the thought of it made her sick. How was one supposed to deliver that sort of news? She had spent all the time since trying to figure it out, but it seemed the universe had another idea. The TV shut off with a click, and she sat up to look at her daughter properly.

There was no want nor need for her to lie. Yennefer didn’t like lying to Ciri, there had been enough trouble stirred up by that in the past, and she found no good came from it. Her reply was quiet, “Yes.” She let the word hang in the air for a minute, before continuing, “You have every right to be angry with me, but would you let me explain?”
