Samwise had never heard of any of the holidays that the people of Sallow Hills began to buzz about as the days began to chill. Then again, he had never heard of many things people here talked of. He did his best to learn through library books or stories told by friends and customers.
He had always loved holidays back home. Festivities sprawled out from under the Party Tree across the entire Party Field. If there was one thing a hobbit knew, it was enjoy a good party. It combined their three favorite activities: eating good food, drinking good ale, and having good company. Foreyule (a celebration of the new year) was upon him, and he wasn't going to let the location stop him from having a little party between friends.
This is why he found himself walking down the street, hands full of bags from various shops in town. Everything was going just fine until one of the brown paper bags ripped, sending various items tumbling down the sidewalk. Blast, Samwise Gamgee. Bending down to pick things up, he was really hoping his mishap had gone unnoticed. Unfortunately, he was mistaken, as someone had already approached him.

REMUS TURNED HIS PAD OVER AND OVER IN HIS HANDS. it was a reporter’s pad he’d taken from the newspaper, figuring that since he was an editor no one would mind if he took one. No one had, especially since they got used so rarely anymore. He understood the advances in technology (more than he let on to Shepard, merely because it was funny) but he would never not want to write things out by hand. ❝ Truthfully, I don’t know if some of these even exist here. They were rare in my world. But if you have any of these, preferably not cut so that I can continue to grow them. ❞
❝ RIGHT, THE MOST DIFFICULT ONE I SUPPOSE? wolfsbane or aconite, and yes i do know how poisonous it is which means you probably don’t carry it. I also need valerian, but specifically I need to be able to semi-frequently harvest valerian roots, so I’m unsure the best way to go about that. I’ll also need moonseed, bloodroot, st. johns-wort, mint, and sage. ❞
HE PROBABLY SOUNDED LIKE A CRAZY PERSON, even for himself. He was just glad that he didn’t recognize the man from home, otherwise he might be able to tell what Remus needed the ingredients for. Merlin, he still might be able to tell and Remus could be outing himself right here and now. Bu the needed the wolfsbane potion.

When the list was rattled off, Sam became much more intrigued than he had been moments before. He cared about everyone who came into his shop, but the people who came in with lists similar to this were always up to something. What those things were, he didn't know, and he certainly would never ask. The purposes of some transactions were obvious, but the purposes of most were unknown to him. This one was… well, he could hypothesize.
“You'd be surprised how many poisonous things I keep in stock. Safely hidden away, of course, but you don’t keep good business in a place like this if you aren’t willing to adapt to the needs of your customers, if you take my meaning. Now lets see, aconite… aconite…” he repeated the word, carding through the mental checklist of things he had on hand. “I think I did start a crop of that, but just recently. I could sell you some of the seedlings right now, but if you come back in a week they should be better suited for use.”
Despite the pieces clicking into place, Sam gave no hint of what he may suspect. He reached for the notebook which he had just set down, and flipped a few pages. He seemed satisfied with what he found there. “As for everything else, I should have it all in stock. Though, good as I am, I can’t magically replicate plant roots, but I could show you how to tend to your own plant so that it’ll last multiple harvests without dying if you wish.”

Ahsoka had fallen in love with the way Earth did holidays, they felt so soft and warm to ward off the winter cold. She both loved and hated the snow and the cold, for what she felt was good reason. The reality, though, was that she hadn’t particularly allowed herself to get close to anyone and it made it a lonely time of year as well.
Distracted, she walked through town for her break from the inn, knowing it was important she let herself walk away from time to time. But, even distracted, she had a habit of paying attention to the people around her. Hearing the rip, her eyebrow arched as she looked to the source. She followed that instinct she always had that said go help and immediately knelt to help him gather up the few stragglers.
“Here you go,” she mused, holding onto the things she’d picked up. “I have a spare bag, one of the reusable ones,” she offered, reaching into her bag and pulling it out, tucking his things into it before holding it out. “Don’t want you to lose anything,” she said gently, a soft smile on her face.

It took a moment to register the woman’s words as he had been wrangling in the items that had rolled. Samwise, obviously frazzled, needed a second to find his voice again, “Oh, thank you very much.“
He was grinning now, and, taking the bag from her, Sam put the items he had picked up into it. A quick glance over the contents told him that everything had been retrieved, aside from… aha! He reached over to grab the missing bag of cinnamon, and dropped it in. Standing, he offered a hand to help her up.
“I really appreciate the hand. I don’t think we’ve met! Sam Gamgee, at your service.” The whole non-Middle-Earth greeting thing was still slightly confusing to him, but it's the thought that counts. Right?

“Sometimes I can’t help but wonder if I am actually human. I have been used as a vessel for deities so many times I can’t help but feel like I lost my humanity long ago” Zelda mused. Those words had always been on her mind but never uttered out loud until now. They never wanted to tell Link how inhuman she sometimes felt. How it felt like her body wasn’t her’s but the Goddesses. Those feelings would always linger no matter how many years would pass.
“Your Frodo. Did you ever tell him how you felt? How devoted you were to him?” it was nice to switch the focus of the conversation onto someone else. Talking about herself became so draining after a while. Being the centre of attention had never been Zelda’s cup of tea yet it seemed like fate had different plans for them. Time and time again the princess would be in the spotlight and every single time they felt discomfort.
“I hope Frodo will end up here in Sallow. You deserve happiness, my dear Sam”
Samwise didn’t have a good response for that. He had never come close to a deity in the way Zelda had, and he couldn’t hope to come up with something that wasn’t grasping at straws. But he tried anyway, because Sam would never let anyone he cared for go uncomforted. “I can’t say I know much about your background, but I do know you. I know you’ve got a big heart, and a level head, and you’re stubborn beyond belief. I think those are very human qualities indeed.”
Finally stepping back to resume cooking, Sam chuckled a bit at her question. “I did tell him, yes. I told him all the time, for years of my life, though it did take a long while for me to figure out just how deeply I meant it. I worked for him, you see, and its common to pronounce your devotion to the one you serve like that where I’m from. I realized it at a bad time, but we were lucky enough to get the chance to be with one another when we returned to the Shire. He sighed a little at that, vegetables going into a pot on the stove to soften. “You’re too kind, Zelda, but I do too. I really do too… You know, its funny. You remind me of him quite a bit sometimes.”

River liked her job. She did! Teaching felt like the one thing that was right, where everything else felt all jumbled and out of place to the point it made her head hurt. Though today the students were on an assembly schedule, which meant she got plenty of extra time to herself. She was quite happy with that, as she had fallen behind on grading a stack of quizzes from a few days before.
She had just popped in the break room to grab a bottle of water from the vending machine, when she saw someone she didn’t recognize. For a moment, she thought it was a rogue student, but she quickly caught sight of the visitor’s badge, which is how she figured this woman must be from the group putting the assembly on.
By that point, River had made eye contact, and it would’ve been rude not to say anything. She wasn't a rude person, at least, she didn’t think so. With a smile, she nodded at the woman, “Tea? Don’t go for the green packet. It's nasty stuff,” she said, referring to the communal tray of tea on the counter. “Try the blue instead. It's not the best in the world, but it is here.”

MERLIN PUSHED ONE MORE BOUT OF ENERGY INTO THE BUSHES BEFORE HE STOOD. he wiped his hands off on his pants, offering a smile to the other. ❝ Please, just Merlin. I see my reputation or name has proceeded me. ❞ It didn’t bother him when people just knew his name. In Camelot it would’ve been cause of worry, especially when he was supposed to be keeping a low profile. But here, he was one of the few doctors working in memory recovery and he spent much time around town.
❝ I’M NOT SURE IF IT’S BRAVE OR STUPID TO NOT FEEL FRIGHTENED. perhaps a bit of both. My - my old friend was the same way often. He never did listen to my warnings. ❞ It still ached to think about Arthur, but with Gwen it was getting better. Even now, his words were laddened with sorrow, but something closer to nostalgia. ❝ Oh me? I’m just checking on some of the plants. Most of them can flourish on their own, but I like swinging by and making sure they’re doing okay. Some of the animals as well. ❞

Studying the bushes, Sam ran over the possible reasoning for the other’s interest in them, but the thought was dispelled when Merlin spoke. “Oh, yes, just a bit mis- Merlin. I may be newer round these parts, but I chat with customers quite often.” This was true enough. There was much you could find out by being kind and striking up the odd conversation; he had learned that early into his old job as mayor in the Shire.
Chuckling at the comment, Samwise shook his head a bit, “I used to be friends with a few people like that, myself.” Much more than friends with one of them, but Sam left that bit out. Thinking of Frodo made him incredibly homesick, and he didn’t feel like being questioned about it.
“That's quite nice of you. I like checking out the greenery as well. I’ll come out every so often to check on things, and familiarize myself with the native species, so I can– sorry. I tend to get a bit swept up in that sort of talk. It's my thing, as some would say.” He cleared his throat, mind going back to the previous comment, “Should I be frightened of that Grey Mare? I didn’t think it did anything too nasty, but it's easy to be mistaken in unfamiliar places.”

Catra couldn’t help but smile a little bit. Midna was indeed perking them up, a task which had felt impossible an hour ago.
Xe felt a bit odd when Midna linked arms with xem. It was rather intimate, at least in Catra’s opinion. Xe weren’t used to a lot of physical touch from people that weren’t Adora. But it was nice, and xe let Midna lead xem, enjoying the path and the silence.
Xe weren’t suprised though when Midna spoke up. Midna definitely had a way about her. She seemed to be good at drawing Catra out of xir shell.
“Still at the B&B,” Catra said. “I hadn’t bothered looking for a place of my own, given that I was determined to get the hell out of here. But I suppose I should start looking now that I’m most definitely stuck.”
Understanding what Catra meant, Midna nodded. Everything about arriving in this place was stressful, and she couldn’t blame them for stubbornly trying to abandon the place.
“I suppose you should,” she agreed. “Places here aren’t hard to come by. There's a bunch of different options, and someone is always looking for a roommate. I’m sure you’ll find something soon enough. You can at least make yourself comfortable while you try and plan a break out or while you wait for your friends to show up.”
It wasn't long before they were nearing one of the roads into town. There wasn't anyone on the street that Midna could see, but that was to be expected at this time of night. The moon was high, and the hour was getting late. This was admittedly her favorite way to see Sallow Hills— blanketed by the soft glow of the moon. It was the closest to the feeling of home she could get.
