I talk about why it’s important to acknowledge that this hate crime happened at the intersection of racism and misogyny, the history behind the oversexualization of Asian women in the Western context, the history of Asian exclusion in Canada and the US, the role media plays in encouraging these hate crimes, the ways you can support the Asian and Pacific Islander communities, and more.

Stepping out of the claustrophobic space that was my home, into beautiful sunlight which had somehow still always felt melancholic

Dragging my feet down the small street to the trail I had yet gotten to know

To a trail of traintracks, surrounded by greenery and the smell of Summer

I stood there, staring down the tracks that must've gone for miles and could've taken me anywhere

Anywhere but here

Take a deep breath,

Start walking.

One can only go so far from what's home, so I go back to the what's only considered a house

Day after day I make the trip down the road lined with decrepit houses on each side, to an opening in the forest,

To the tracks

I get further each time

Staying out later,

Walking slower,

Taking up as much time as I could.

Seeing those tracks and the forest surrounding it change gracefully throughout the seasons,

Yet never being able to appreciate the beauty of it all

Looking back on it though, I remember

Remember how each season smelt

How the air felt

The colors.

Winter was my last season there,

I had made it pretty far down the tracks by that point

The last step I took before heading back for the final time left me standing at the end of the tracks, a road infront of me and the next set of tracks following after

I stood there for longer than necessary, the scenery ahead of me hardly something to be admired,

I didn't want to have to make that trip back.

I was so tired,

So tired of what kept driving me further down the tracks.

Does growing up have to mean growing apart?

no. Bryon wasnt going to accept that.Hes known Mark for pretty much his whole life, and as he stood there,looking at the self-destructive boy in front of him, he knew he couldn't let anyone take him away. "..Bryon..? C'mon man, say something." Bryon came close to Mark, close enough to make out the details on his face. Hes never really got this good of a look at Mark, freckles scattered along the bridge of his nose, dark blue eyes that had little details of purple outlining the pupil. He really was beautiful..Bryons always acknowledge this, but was never able to truly absorb it. "M&M...H-Hes sick- well...he had a bad trip and- fuck Mark." Bryon inhaled sharply and ran a hand through his hair in frustration. "I didnt sell him anything. Bryon, think here man, this is me we're talking' bout- I'm reckless sometimes, but I'm not gunna sell something that fucking serious to a minor!" Mark had a look on his face, Bryon couldnt quite place it though it looked similar to a panicked expression..desperate almost. "Hes really messed up,Mark.." Mark looked away for a second, then back at Bryon."Yeah..?" "Yeah." Bryon replied. Mark walked off after a second and sat on the couch, head in his hands. Bryon waited for Mark to say something- anything. Hed take anything at all, things got to quiet. Eventually Mark looked up, eyes rimmed with red- a look Bryon hardly sees on his friend. "..Mark?" Mark shook his head for a couple seconds, hands clasped together near his head with his elbows resting on his knees. "You aint gunna say anything, r-right? I mean, you- fuck, you can't..!" Mark was really starting to panicn ow, and frankly it scared the hell out of Bryon. This is something he wasnt used to. Even in the hardest situations, Mark was calm. He was calm to the point that it was frighting. "I can. Jesus man, I should! M&M is messed up! Hes in the hospital, and might never be the same again! Cathys freaking out, desperate for a solution! And now I'm in the position where I might have to rat out my bestfriend!" Bryon was raising his voice now, he was pissed. Though weirdly enough, Cathy wasnt his focus right now. He wasnt thinking about how upset she was. He was thinking about the minor in the hospital, and ruining any history he ever had with the person he loved. It was all to much. "I wanted to help pay for things! Your mom and you have so much responsibility and do so much for me! I wanted to repay you guys, I cant live off you two forever! And with my police record, people wont hire me!" Mark stood up abruptly, face red and stained from the tears and frustration. Bryon was starting to see red, worry and anger taking over and the next thing he knew, Mark was on the floor holding his now cut and bruising cheek. Mark looked shocked almost, they've play faught before and wrestled but neither of them ever snapped at the other like Bryon just did. "I want you to listen to me Mark, really listen." He knelt down so he was at Marks level. "I'm not gunna turn you in-" A brief look crossed Marks face, until- "But. ...If you ever pull something like this again, Ill knock your teeth out. Think of it as a love tap." Bryon tried to give a light smile, trying to soften the blow of the threat."Youre the one damn person who has always been there. Ive known you too damn long, and been so damn close with you for every moment of my life so far. I'm not willing to end what we have any time soon...I'll get ya a job man, kay? We'll figure something out.."Mark swallowed the lump in his throat, breathing in a shaky breath and laying on the floor, with a sigh and nod of defeat. "Fuck man,I didnt mean for it to get like this.." Bryon nodded and sat down,pulling Mark up gently by his shirt, "..I know buddy..I know." He patted Marks shoulder, and at some point or another- he didnt even realize for a bit- he had Mark in a hug, holding him close to his chest. They have never been this physically close together before-hell, Mark was practically on Bryons lap. After a long while, Marks breathing eventually calmed down and he was slack in Bryons arms. He wasnt asleep, Bryon could tell, but he was relaxed now. Things were smoothing over. It got too (AN: to? I'm not good with my too/to's) quiet for Bryon, so he ended up taking a risk and saying something he now realizes was quite a dangerous risk to take. "...I love you.." Mark didnt say anything for a bit, nor did he move...but eventually, he slid his hand into Bryons hair,gripping it slightly- almost like it was a lifeline for the slipping boy- and said into the crook of Bryons neck, "I love you too.."
