1) true liberation cannot be achieved through assimilation. while remmick’s character is sympathetic due to the pain he feels as the result of his own people’s experience with colonialism, his goal to use sammy’s music for his own purposes would have been just as violent and oppressive. he (justifiably) hated the english for forcing their way of life onto his people, and yet here he is trying to do the same to sammy and everyone else at the juke joint. to flatten their individuality, erase their history, and force them to enact that same violence against others. his idea of liberation literally turned their bodies into prisons for their souls.
