Part of the reason I've been so inactive recently is because I've been taking part in the Will Wood hair wars as @woofwillwood, so if anyone wants to see whatever shenanigans I'm up to, I might be doing some stuff over there

I've decided that I need to put my thoughts into the mix about the DDVAU mimic theory:

StrangledBabyDuck made a very interesting post introducing a theory that Hotguy in chapter 15 was actually the mimic. I really liked this theory, but with the new chapter having just came out, I think there are a few things that don't really line up with the theory.

First of all, we know from this bit that the same Hotguy has been visiting Grian each day, since he doesn't seem confused about Gem's comment, and references previous conversations that he's had at the hospital.

He also interacts with Grian in ways that show he's been there and done the same thing a few times, which I'd say is enough proof that the same person has been visiting him each day.

So now, we need the proof that the Hotguy in chapter 18 is the real Hotguy, which I think comes most abundantly from his notebook.

We can tell from his notebook that Scar truly doesn't know what's happened to Grian in Mother Spore. We know this isn't a performance or him just pretending, since the only other person in the room isn't awake.

The page on the bottom right where he speaks about the governor also suggests that he's met and spoken to him many times before, which wouldn't make much sense for the mimic.

From the way he's contemplating what happened in chapter 15, it seems he genuinely cares about the case, which is of course is supported very blatantly in the later scene with the fake Martyn.

This section also shows exclusively depictions of Grian that took place in the comic with Scar/HG present.

The last bit I'd like to cover from chapter 18 is in the final two pages. The first thing I noticed about this was that he was in the lab, without Cub, or anyone for that matter, present, when he stated he was tired. If this was the mimic, we might expect them to instead go to some other, more familiar area, but since we don't know much about the mimic, I can't say anything for certain.

The most important part in these final panels is HGs reaction to the mushroom. He is genuinely confused about what is having such a strong affect on the mushrooms, until he remembers the feather in the pocket.

Now, I just want to cover one more thing. StrangledBabyDuck makes a point in their post about how out of character HG acted in chapter 15, but I'd like to make an argument that is wasn't as out of character as it may have appeared at first.

This section from Mother Spore 3 shows how people inside the comic interpret HG and his actions. Tango is genuinely afraid that Hotguy is going to kill him, which he deems worse than him being killed by the spores. This shows that Hotguy acting rashly and poorly isn't uncommon. When someone who doesn't know HG apart from what he likely sees in the media deems him as an immoral person, we may be able to guess that he doesn't always take the best course of action.

I'm probably going to leave it there for now, but there are a few more things I've left out, but I've never done one of these theory posts before, and I think I'd rather keep is relatively short. If anyone has any questions or anything to add, feel free to do so! I also actually do have a few ideas from the new chapter that may actually support the mimic theory, so if anyone is interested, let me know and I may make a counter-counter post.
