A very lonely night from the Merpepito AU
-
Pepito canât sleep. The boat is rocking too much and Miss Baghera is snoring (even though she keeps saying that Captain Celbi is the one snoring; sheâs just a dirty rotten pirate, though, so why would she tell the truth?) and Pepito canât stop thinking about the Very Bad Thing and, and, and-
Pepito whimpers into his pillow. His eyes squeeze shut, but all he sees in the darkness is the blood and their eyes- their eyes!! Empty and terrified and all because of Pepito because Pepito is a Bad Pepito.
Apa Roier is probably sleeping just fine. Him and Apa Mariana probably havenât even noticed that Pepitoâs been gone for an entire month. They probably got Apa Quackity and Apa Carre and Ama Rivers and they got a new Pepito- a Good Pepito- and theyâre all in the same house and happy, and itâs fine!!!
Pepito stifles a sob with the sleeve of his shirt. Theyâre probably happier with their New Pepito. That Pepito isnât a bad person. They deserve a Good Pepito, theyâre good parents. The best parents. Ever. Of all time.
Miss Baghera snorfles in her sleep, and Pepito decides that, despite him being a super evil pirate now, it would be rude to wake Miss Baghera up with his crying.
So Pepito slides out of his bunk and puts his glasses on.
He tiptoes out of the sleeping quarters and upstairs onto the deck (because thatâs apparently what the shipâs roof is called.)
The sun is nice, but Pepito thinks that Pepito likes the moon just as much. It always looks like itâs smiling, even when itâs going away to hide. PrettyâŠ
Pepito huddles next to the central mast and looks up at the moon. Maybe the moon would like Pepito. It seems nice.
Pepito canât talk because of the Magic, but he can think, and, silently, he asks the moon if it would like to be Pepitoâs friend.
Thatâs when Pepito hears a quiet sniffle from up by the steering wheel.
Peeking around the mast, Pepito sees⊠Captain Celbi!? Crying!? And aloneâŠ
Determined, Pepito stands and trots up the stairs to the steering wheel.
Captain Celbi, of course, sees Pepito approaching. He has good eyes. (Heâs so cool!)
âHi, Pepito,â Captain Celbi says. He smiles, and, in the dark, it doesnât even look like heâs sad.
He isnât in his Captain Clothes. Heâs in his⊠pajamas? Heâs half-dressed: half-pajamas, half regular clothes. His coat is on, but his hat isnât.
He has both of his hands firmly planted on the steering wheelâs handles, and- whoah, holy Ocean, did his hair just move!?
Almost silver in the moonlight, one of two little pointy things on the top of Captain Celbiâs head twitches like a nervous clownfish.
Pepito gasps. Captain Celbi has horns!
Wait, no, thatâs silly. Sky Pepitos are âhumansâ. They canât have horns.
As if following Pepitoâs train of thought, Captain Celbi raises a hand to press his pointy things down against the top of his head.
âIgnore them,â he tells Pepito. âWhatâs up? Is Baghera snoring again?â
Pepito nods, still staring up at Captain Celbiâs head.
Captain Celbi snorts and shakes his head fondly.
âAnd she says I snore,â he scoffs. âWhat a liar, huh, Pepito?â
Pepito shrugs. Theyâre all pirates. Theyâre supposed to lie, arenât they? Thatâs what Apa Roier says, pirates are all ugly and smelly and theyâre all liars and killers and thieves (though he always says it with a weird fuzzy look in his eyes and with a smile on his face, weird.)
âDonât worry. You can hang out up here with me until youâre tired enough to sleep,â Captain Celbi says.
Pepito wants to say that he doesnât wanna sleep because every time Pepito sleeps he sees the Very Bad Thing and he wakes up sick and sad and useless, but Pepito canât. So he just sighs and sits by Captain Celbiâs feet and watches him steer.
And Captain Celbi lets him. Heâs nice, for a pirate. Apa Roier would like him, probably. Itâs a shame heâs a human. Itâs a shame Pepito is Pepito. Now Apa Roier and Captain Celbi can never meet, all because of him.
Pepitoâs lip wobbles. He doesnât realize heâs crying until Captain Celbi is letting out a soft, pained noise and crouching in front of Pepito with a concerned frown.
âAw, hey, itâs fine,â Captain Celbi says. He pulls his sleeve up over his thumb and uses it to wipe under Pepitoâs eyes. âI donât mind, really. You can stay up here all night, if you want.â
That isnât the problem!
Pepito is tired. Pepito wants to sleep.
Frustrated, Pepito raises his hands and puts them under his head as if they were a pillow.
âRight, you canât sleep.â Captain Celbi nods. âBaghera is snoring. We can find you somewhere else in the morning?â
Pepito sighs and shakes Pepitoâs head.
How to talk about nightmares
âYou donât want to move,â Captain Celbi guesses.
He pauses, then he tries again: âIt isnât the snoring.â
Pepito nods.
Pepito canât talk, and Pepito is still learning the Sky Pepito writing system, so Pepito kinda just hangs out and hopes everyone gets what he wants to say. Itâs like charades, kinda. Itâs fun! Pepito loves charades!
But Pepito is sleepy, but Pepito hasnât been able to sleep since leaving home because of the Very Bad Thing, and it stinks.
Captain Celbi hums thoughtfully, and then he settles down next to Pepito on the deck. (The Ocean feels still, they probably wonât get too off-track if Captain Celbi stops steering.)
âDo you want to know why Iâm up here?â Captain Celbi asks.
He looks around to make sure that nobody has managed to sneak up onto the deck to eavesdrop.
Then, when he knows the coast is clear, he leans in and whispers, âI had a nightmare.â
Pepitoâs eyes widen dramatically. No way!
Captain Celbi nods. âYeah. It was super scary.â
Wordlessly, Pepito takes one of Captain Celbiâs hands in both of Pepitoâs. Itâs what Apa Mariana does when Pepito has nightmares back home, he holds Pepitoâs hands to show him that heâs awake and the bad dream was just that: a dream.
The two points on Captain Celbiâs head stand up again as Pepito touches him, and they stay up.
Captain Celbi half-smiles. âDonât worry, Pepito, Iâm used to bad dreams. Iâve been having them since I was your age, probably.â
Pepitoâs eyes widen. He frowns sympathetically. Poor Captain Celbi⊠even pirates donât deserve bad dreams!
âBut, because Iâve been having bad dreams for so long, I know how to forget about them,â Captain Celbi says. âSee, my bad dreams are all about the bad things Iâve done, and those are in the past. So, to forget about the past, I think about the present and the future.â
He looks up at the moon, slit pupils widening. His eyes almost seem to glow blue in the night like a magic catfishâs.
Pepito thinks. The present and the futureâŠ
Well, Pepito is gonna grow up to be the bestest and scariest pirate on The Ocean. Thatâs in the future.
In the present, though, Pepito is just Pepito. Nothing special there. Just a Bad Pepito.
Captain Celbiâs fingers curl around Pepitoâs.
âIn the present, Iâm taking my crew on a trip around the world, and weâre having a good time,â Captain Celbi continues. He looks at Pepito out of the corner of his eye. âAre you having a good time, Pepito?â
Pepito ponders. He thought thereâd be more pirate-ing, but heâs been having a lot of fun playing games with Richarlyson and Pomme, and itâs fun learning how to tie knots with Mister Pac, and itâs really fun hiding in the crowâs nest with Mister Felps and Miss Baghera when theyâre supposed to be doing chores.
So Pepito nods and grins.
Captain Celbi smiles the rest of the way and looks back up at the moon.
âAnd, in the present, Iâm looking for treasure,â he says. âThe most mysterious treasure of all. And, when I find him, then itâll be time for the future.â
Can treasure be a person?
Well, Apa Carre always said that Pepito was his treasure, so it makes sense.
But Captain Celbi already has a Pepito, he has Richarlyson! Why does he need another treasure if he has a Richarlyson?
âBy the time Iâm ready to think about the future, itâs all my brain wants to imagine. So thatâs what my dreams become,â Captain Celbi finishes. âNightmares are in the past. The past doesnât matter. What matters is the present.â
His voice goes harsh then, but Pepito doesnât notice. Heâs too busy thinking about the future: Captain Pepito in charge of the S.S. Pepito and beating up any annoying Navy guys he finds with his totally amazing crew.
Pepito yawns. Without thinking, he shuffles so heâs next to Captain Celbi. He leans against Captain Celbi, eyes slipping shut as he thinks of the future.
Apa Roier will be on the S.S. Pepito. So will the rest of Pepitoâs parents, and they can bring their Good Pepito, too. Theyâre all Ocean Pepitos, so they wonât be able to breathe in the Sky, so theyâll have a swimming pool in the ship.
Pomme and Richarlyson will be there, too. So will Captain Celbi and Miss Baghera and Misters Pacandmike and Miss Mouse and Mister Felps andâŠ
Soothed by the rocking of the waves and the comforting presence of his super scary and evil captain, Pepito finally manages to fall asleep, right there on the deck of the ship tucked into Captain Celbiâs side.
(And thatâs how Richarlyson finds the two of them hours later when the sun rises.
Ew, Richarlyson thinks. He glowers and storms below deck to get some trash to dump on them.
Gross.
Pepito really should just learn that he isnât Pai Cellbitâs kid, the little shitâŠ)

A/N:
And that was Part 2 for you!
Hey guys!! PLEASE reblog this! And leave an ask or a comment or a tag or a whatever telling me your thoughts and questions! Let me know if you want more, because there is more!
Love how tumblr has its own folk stories. Yeah the God of Arepo weâve all heard the story and we all still cry about it. Yeah that one about the woman locked up for centuries finally getting free. That one about the witch who would marry anyone who could get her house key from her cat and itâs revealed she IS the cat after the narrator befriends the cat.
âWhy is trending so weirdâ because of tag spam. Because people (and bots) are tagging like itâs Instagram.
This is spam. Itâs against TOS and it throws trending completely out of whack, along with being wildly annoying.
Please, please, PLEASE report posts like this as spam, because otherwise itâs just gonna get fucking worse
having good & true friends will literally save and protect you in a million unfathomable ways. like okay we have written so many times about lovers. but the way a platonic friend laughs and cries with you. the way they hold your hand at 14 years old and at 34. the way they keep a little silver tie to you, touching base over and over and over. how you can go years without talking, only to re-meet and discover: oh shit! you're still cool!
there are people who have been in my life for more than half of it, and i have loved every version of them. do you know how fucking beautiful that is. yeah love will save the world. but the way friends love you is gonna save the you.
