Empire Strikes Back

When I was little, my older brothers had once set me up a film evening, while our parents were out. That was Empire Strikes Back. They knew the plot, for sure, years later it was, so they brought me plenty of biscuits and candies, to cheer me up at the Cloud City hand chopping scene. So right after that "nooooooo!" scene, Luke jumped down, and our parents came back. And they started shouting at my brothers smth like: "why is your little sister drowning in sweets?!".

And I went: "But, mummy, I am very upset!"

Mum: "Why would that be?"

Me: "Because Vader has such an ungrateful and naughty son. Luke doesn't love his father at all. I would never reject if you were suggesting me a dinner or asking somewhere out."

fan comic drawn to excerpts from Half-Hanged Mary by Margaret Atwood, featuring Sofia Falcone from The Penguin.

text: Rumour was loose in the air, hunting for some neck to land on.

scene: A young Sofia turns in alarm, dressed as she was during the night of her father’s birthday party. Her image is framed inside a noose, and the battered hands of her father’s victims reach out from the borders, their fingernails chipped and stained from struggle.

text: Death sits on my shoulder like a crow waiting for my squeezed beet of a heart to burst. Or like a judge muttering about sluts and punishment. Or like a dark angel, insidious in his glossy feathers, whispering to me to be easy on myself. To breathe out finally. Trust me, he says, caressing me. Why suffer?

scene: Sofia kneels in despair, wearing the chains and inmate uniform from Arkham Asylum. The portrait of her father looms in the background, accompanied by a doctor from the asylum and her therapist, Julian Rush. All three men have their eyes blacked out with a streak of paint, though Julian’s expression appears more sympathetic.

text: A temptation, to sink down into these definitions. To become a martyr in reverse, or food, or trash. To give up my own words for myself, my own refusals. To give up knowing. To give up pain. To let go.

scene: Sofia sits with her knees drawn to her chest, clutching her arms as a tear falls down her cheek. Her eyes are wide and desperate. At the bottom of the page, off to the side, lies the body of Magpie, the fellow inmate she killed after her trial was denied. Bright red blood is splattered across her face.

text: Now I only need to look out at them through my dark brown eyes. They see their own ill will staring them in the forehead and turn tail. Before, I was not a witch.

scene: Sofia stands at the end of the dinner table, facing down the Falcone family for their part in her wrongful conviction. Her hair is down, and she wears a striking dress with an open back. An inky blackness drips down from the scene into the panel below, where there’s a framed photograph of Sofia and her brother as children, beaming at the camera. The picture emphasizes a time before her suffering.

text: But now I am one.

The final page depicts a confident, powerful Sofia, capturing the moment she takes her mother’s last name: Gigante. She wears a luxurious fur coat that hangs off one shoulder, revealing the scars she gained from her time at Arkham. Her figure is backlit by bright red, as though she’s bathed in the glow of blood and fire, and she faces the viewer with a small smile on her lips.

some people think writers are so eloquent and good with words, but the reality is that we can sit there with our fingers on the keyboard going, “what’s the word for non-sunlight lighting? Like, fake lighting?” and for ten minutes, all our brain will supply is “unofficial”, and we know that’s not the right word, but it’s the only word we can come up with…until finally it’s like our face got smashed into a brick wall and we remember the word we want is “artificial”.
