Absolutely Incredible

Absolutely incredible

Imagine making a movie with a budget of $25 million and making $130 million internationally during the first weekend while your movie is also on streaming!

So proud of Blumhouse and everyone who worked on this movie, I’m wholeheartedly looking forward to the sequels!

I keep seeing critics talking about the fnaf movie being poor but i literally isn't for them. I saw someone else saying the movie's a love letter to the fandom and i WHOLEHARTEDLY agree.

This is how i took it: We, the fans, are Anton Ego, the critic from Ratatouille; the ratatouille was special to us because it was our childhood. I hate ratatouille (the food), but to Anton Ego it was everything. Critics don't like the fnaf movie because they only have the movie as context, but to fans, the fnaf movie is everything and we love it even though it's a little cringey. In fact we love it BECAUSE it's cringey in some cases.

Like no new viewers would get the chica's magic rainbow part, or the MatPat reference, or the whole ongoing bit about Dream Theory sucking, or understand how hype the whole ending part was.

I was lucky to be in a cinema full of fnaf fans, and we were cheering and laughing, and screaming at the references. People got up when the movie ended and SAT BACK DOWN when the living tombstone came on. We shouted the letters of the code, and screamed when Matpat said his line. People clapped and cheered at the end, and people were crying at the parts where they were treating the animatronics with love and affection.

No critics would understand how much fans want to interact with the animatronics in a positive way, or understand how much importance the five seconds of its me on the mirror means in implications of the lore. They wouldn't understand because they haven't been waiting a good part of a decade to see this movie. They came, they saw, and that's it, it was a second of their life, but to us it was everything. This is our ratatouille, made to impress us, not the other people in the restaurant. This was our movie, a love letter to the fandom, not the critics.

I like the changes to the story, because it puts us back at square one. We're fumbling to rearrange lore and timelines. We have to rearrange names, and start with a blank slate, and it feels like a homecoming where to critics, it might feel a little messy.

We've been given a chance to start the journey all over again and i fucking love it so much. Because i'm an adult, and all of a sudden, i'm twelve years old again and we're trying to figure out if phone guy is chica, and struggling our way through whatever the fuck was happening in fnaf 3 to get the good ending. The critics don't get this.

They don't understand how hype the midnight motorists reference is, nor did they care about the references on the chalkboard. Or the code at the end, or the song choices, or the lore implications. They don't understand the sudden lore drop of william afton, or the way he's acting, but we do. They don't understand the vengeful spirit, but we do. Nothing is explained to the audience, because we don't need it to be explained.

This is our ratatouille, and we love the rats in the kitchen.

I feel like some people need to relearn Genre Expectations... "Man, this tragedy sucks!!! Why didn't they just do XYZ, then everything could have ended happily!!" well, then it wouldn't be a tragedy, would it. "Man, this lighthearted teen romcom is terrible, it's so sappy and unrealistic!!" Well, yeah. If it had been gritty and dark, it wouldn't have been a lighthearted romcom, would it. Is the writing actually bad or are you just trying to order a milkshake from a Home Depot

would you consider dropping some tips on how you color? your art always has such a nice feeling to it

Thank you so much, and yes, absolutely!

So... I have been agonizing over how to answer this question for over a week because I tend to make a lot of my major decisions based on what looks and feels good to me in the moment. It’s sort of hard to explain. Then I started getting philosophical with it (“how does one color? How do I explain aesthetic?”), and I started rambling, and had to cut the answer way, way, way down lol.

But here’s what I can help with right now. I think the most important part of how I color is my tools and what they allow me to do. These are currently my favorite brushes to use:

Would You Consider Dropping Some Tips On How You Color? Your Art Always Has Such A Nice Feeling To It

From top to bottom, I use Kyle T’s Gouache for just about everything. A lot of my recent pieces are done entirely in that– I love the chunky texture and how the pressure mimics traditional gouache. It’s great for children’s book illustrations, and filling linework, and realistic portraits. She is my soft wife and I love her.

I practically never use the default hard round. Ignore that.

The roller brush is another one I use for painting. It was my go-to before KT’s gouache, so you’ll find it a lot in my older work (and as a big texture thing in my current works). The “Sampled Tip” below that one I usually use for children’s book styled illustrations. It’s like a really dense, waxy crayon, so it’s fun for textured lines and details.

I always paint in my own shadows and highlights, but I like to use the soft round if I want to blow the shadow or highlight out. It’s for extra large areas.

And finally my pencil. I use it for sketching as well as linework, if I plan on doing a linework-centric piece. I don’t think there’s much of a difference between the two there… one is probably smoother than the other.

______________

The reason why I like textured, pressure-sensitive brushes so much is because they’re important to how I paint. When I blend, I don’t use a blender brush or a smudge tool. What I do is layer two colors– lightly– then use the eyedropper to select the color between them and continue painting with it. That’s probably the key to most of my work. I’ve gotten pretty fast at it, so I’m constantly selecting colors from the painting and reusing it throughout my painting.

I still use the color-wheel to hand-pick what I think will look best, though. This is probably going to be a really frustrating answer, but I choose color palettes based on basic color/lighting theory combined with personal aesthetic preference. It can take some studying (of both theory and other artists’ work). If you’re ever looking for a really great reference on the former subjects, I highly recommend Color and Light by James Gurny. Even if you’re not into watercolor or dinosaurs or realism, the guy is a master at explaining all that different stuff in depth.

Shape and negative space are also pretty important to me, but that's a whole other thing. And as a side-note, I recommend following more children’s book illustrators. Their work may look simple, but a lot of intention goes into how they use color, shape, space, and texture.

Also, on texture, I hand-draw most of mine. I love to add little scratches and drops and splashes when the painting is almost over. It's one of my favorite things to do :')

____

Now, the other most important tip:

Once I’m happy with the sketch/linework, and once I’ve laid down the basic colors of my piece, I do a Really Terrible Thing. I become a graphic designer’s worst nightmare and collapse everything onto one layer.

Then I paint directly on top of it, linework and all.

I do this for a lot of reasons, but mostly because 1) my tiny brain is overwhelmed by the clutter of too many layers, and 2) it forces me to approach a piece as if it was traditional media– a process which I find a lot more comfortable and rewarding. I paint right on top of the base colors, and right on top of the linework, effectively redoing and cleaning up what I already have there. Even if I'm working with a blank background, I'll paint a new blank one on top because it gives the feeling of a more unified piece, if that makes sense.

Basically, I approach my drawings as if I’m using traditional media. I like chunky brushes, utilizing (what I personally think are) interesting color combinations and textures, and smashing everything down onto one page so I can just paint.

Anyway, please let me know if there’s anything specific you’d like me to go into detail on, any pieces of mine you’d like to know how exactly I went about it, etc etc etc. I’m happy to answer ^^

Trigun Bookclub: Trigun Vol.1, Chapter #02

previous | all | next

Continuation of my Trigun annotation for the book club. I'm doing a deep-read of the Japanese original print (reread) and Overhaul 1.0 (first read) side-by-side, and writing down everything I notice from small details, version differences, translation differences, etc. (and being gay about the characters <3 always important

Here are the beloved non-analysis sillies...

The second page has an error - 悪夢 was probably misread as 悪魔 ("happen" and "awaken" are also the same kanji). It should be "Then, the nightmare occurred." It's really cool that this still works really well considering...y'know (not saying for the first-time readers ;) )

I just love how that drawing of Vash is so cool and serious...

Trigun Bookclub: Trigun Vol.1, Chapter #02
Trigun Bookclub: Trigun Vol.1, Chapter #02

...and then you turn the page and he's in the most pathetic cunty pussy-out pose you've ever seen. Easily one of my favorite panels. Also made a math question for funsies. sorry to anyone who got high school flashbacks, but I absolutely loved trigonometry lmao. I could do this forever.

Trigun Bookclub: Trigun Vol.1, Chapter #02
Trigun Bookclub: Trigun Vol.1, Chapter #02

A little pun(?) that may or may not be intentional - In Japanese, someone with a bounty on their head is called 賞金首, lit. "bounty neck" ("neck" sometimes signifies the entire head). The locals call out for the bounty-neck right as Vash hurt his neck lol

I love how creepy Vash moves sometimes. absolute cryptid

This is entirely a Japanese-only detail, but I really loved how Vash said バヤイ in the sobbing in French line, because my mom also says that instead of 場合 when she's being silly lmao. Also, it's notable that in Japanese, Vash says フランセ語 ("Francé-go," where "go" is the suffix for languages) which may be either another miles->iles/double-dollar situation, or just him speaking silly like バヤイ.

Also, the line after that would more accurately be "How am I supposed to deal with all these locals?"

Trigun Bookclub: Trigun Vol.1, Chapter #02

Here, the "Really?" is actually Meryl saying something like "I'll give you a hint."

Meryl tends to be the one responsible for the braincell in fanworks but it's important to remember that she absolutely is dumb too (affectionate).

I'm so glad I wrote that reminder about Meryl's speech, but I don't think I'll be able to do it justice here when I have so much more to talk about. I'll have to write another post later, so I'll link it when it's done. The gist is that she talks like a stereotypical high-class anime girl, and the trope is from how a similar demographic in Meiji-era Japan actually spoke.

Trigun Bookclub: Trigun Vol.1, Chapter #02

The boy's pussy faces the world yet again. I love all the faces he makes!! look at him!!!!!!!!!!! he's so cute

Trigun Bookclub: Trigun Vol.1, Chapter #02
Trigun Bookclub: Trigun Vol.1, Chapter #02

The text on the board here was very messy and squished, but it says something like "Vash the Stampede Absolute Capture Task Force Headquarters." Honestly don't know how to fit all that into the board though so uh good luck on that for 2.0... Also dear god Vash has so much energy... He's just been running for 3 hours straight...!!

Fun fact: the equivalent idiom to "fight fire with fire" in Japanese is "use poison on poison."

Trigun Bookclub: Trigun Vol.1, Chapter #02
Trigun Bookclub: Trigun Vol.1, Chapter #02

Love how Nebraska is just like "no we didn't jailbreak, we just let ourselves out :/"

Translation error for Milly and the chairman - Milly is saying "Why do things keep getting worse and worse!?" and the chairman is mumbling "What's the deal with you two..."

Trigun Bookclub: Trigun Vol.1, Chapter #02
Trigun Bookclub: Trigun Vol.1, Chapter #02

Showing some love for his pretty pretty eyes..........(gives him so many smooches in my head)("i can imagine anything" image)(can't add it because i reached the 30 image limit)

The "Freeze!" is actually untranslated, just re-typed to match the surrounding font. Also, that panel is the first time Vash's antennae is shown bent!! It goes back up immediately after that though.

Fun fact #2. Vash says ara ara. if you even care.

Trigun Bookclub: Trigun Vol.1, Chapter #02

This line never fails to hit me hard. They're all desperate mothers and sisters, and they're taking on the bad role because nothing's more important than their dear children. (reminds me of a certain someone...)

Trigun Bookclub: Trigun Vol.1, Chapter #02
Trigun Bookclub: Trigun Vol.1, Chapter #02

I've seen someone mention this before, but Trimax definitely adjusted the number of plants. Fifty!?!? Also, in Japanese, "plants" and "died" were in quotations.

I love the gun pull in the right panel. Vash obviously definitely doesn't intend on shooting, but is rather showing off his skill and resolve as an intimidation tactic to throw the girls off-guard.

Trigun Bookclub: Trigun Vol.1, Chapter #02

God this entire spread is just so RAW.... (here's the post that's mentioned in blue. it just reminded me)

Trigun Bookclub: Trigun Vol.1, Chapter #02
Trigun Bookclub: Trigun Vol.1, Chapter #02

Some more hypes and sillies. The impact that "KISS MY ASS!!" had on my first read was phenomenal!! It's so silly!! and cool!!!

Trigun Bookclub: Trigun Vol.1, Chapter #02

And then there's this!! Another favorite part of mine. Vash's antennae are bent again! They kind of alternate between straight and bent from here.

The green writing about the onomatopoea are more of just a translation note rather than a suggestion. I can't think of any good beckoning noises in English :V

Trigun Bookclub: Trigun Vol.1, Chapter #02

And finally, Milly calls "Mr. Bomb" "Bomb-kun" in Japanese which I think yall would enjoy lol. And happy strangling her saturday tuesday.

The Japanese version of the annotations are in the reblogs, if anyone wants them.

I have Chapter #03 mostly ready, so I'll probably post it tomorrow morning and try to speedrun the rest of the chapters because this is taking longer than I expected!! God there's just so much to say!! (Also gotta remember to write about Meryl's speech!!)

And thank yall so much for the feedback on the Chapters #00-01 post!! I didn't know so many people were interested in such small details!! Love (and peace) yall 🫶🤞

ALL* content warnings for trigun and trimax

my boyfriend and i have been compiling a warning list for trigun and trimax for anyone interested in starting the series, especially those finding the series through the trigun bookclub (over @trigunbookclub ) . it's taken quite a bit of work and im proud to turn it loose :]

i've tried to keep these as spoiler-free as possible for any new readers. while i read both the official dark horse translation as well as the @trigun-manga-overhaul translation, ill be using the overhaul translation by and large for clarity (and because im biased, and prefer the overhaul, and please go support their work). if you're using a different translation, please note that chapter titles and the language used will be different.

general warnings for TRIGUN are: frequent abuse of alcohol; frequent loss of autonomy, ie people being forced to do things against their will; passive suicidality; body horror; gun violence and corrupt authorities typical of the wild west genre; assume lots of blood and heaps of shooting. more specific warnings will be under the cut.

[Vol 1, Ch 01, "The $$60 Billion Double Dollar Man"] misogyny, sexual harassment towards women. [Vol 1, Ch 03, "Hard Puncher"] nondescript facial injury. [Vol 1, Ch 04, "Bang! Bang!"] heavy drinking. a child lies about their aunt being abusive and their uncle being a pedophile. [Vol 1, Ch 05, "Assault"] character is drugged. [Vol 1, Ch 10, "Little Arcadia"] the arcadia arc centers around a conflict between a parent and their child. [Vol 1, Ch 11, "Son"] implied death of a child.

[Vol 2, Ch 01, "Blood and Thunder"] implied intent to harm a child. implied decapitation. [Vol 2, Ch 02, "Diablo"] someone is grabbed by the neck. trigun98 dealing me the mortal blow of Silly Times followed by Heartbreak

though the implications of the changes are really interesting. i just finished episode 6, Lost July, so I got to see 98's version of events. in the manga, we get the detail that One Hundred Thousand people were caught in the explosion

Trigun98 Dealing Me The Mortal Blow Of Silly Times Followed By Heartbreak

100,000 people dead in an instant. he killed them, straight up. He Killed Them. the manga never shies away from this fact.

in the anime, they establish that it was One Million people caught up in it, but he didn't kill them. somehow, he absolutely destroyed everything, but No One Died.

though one million people stuck without shelter or resources eventually led to a similar result. lots of people died. but the key thing is that not EVERYONE died. in the manga, the only way people didnt die was if they just were lucky enough to be out of the city at the time. everyone in the city was obliterated.

i'm also fascinated by their decision to give him a wider span of amnesia. in the manga, he doesn't remember july, but it's a localized amnesia. he has no idea what caused the explosion, doesnt remember even Being in july, just remembers waking up in it. but he remembers the stuff preceding it, enough to know in painful detail every one of the 150 years he's been alive.

in the anime, if he doesn't remember anything prior to july aside from his "early childhood", what exactly does he think happened in the time since? does he Know he's over a hundred years old? which on that matter, when exactly did July happen in the anime? because in the manga, it starts up 6 years after & then spans to 10 years after (by the end of trimax), but in the anime we see this woman who was three years old back then, but is Presumably at least 18, probably over 20 years old. for simplicity's sake, maybe we could say she's ~23, aka it's been 20 years.

6 years to 20 years passed. that's an interesting time difference to set. it's a succinct way of letting the viewers know that Things Are Not Normal with him. earlier in the episode she says he's got no known age, which he doesnt try to contest, but the viewers could just assume that's the general confusion of his identity with the public's knowledge. we've seen Time After Time that a lot of people have no idea who he even is, up to and including confusion about what he even Looks like.

but then we see he looks the same between now and when this woman was a small child. some twenty years passed, and yet he looks the same.

adding in the moment of communication between him and the plant, calming her down... which ON THAT NOTE, earlier in the episode where he's up on the stand & he pours a drink for her and says "You were just tired, weren't you?" it was so Unexpectedly sweet. a moment of connection that would probably gain confusion for someone who doesnt know, but i had to literally pause it bc i was just. floored. by how sweet it was. we are sorely lacking direct interaction between Vash and the plants for most of the manga, so i really appreciated seeing him treat her with that kind of compassion. so, so sweet...

this episode also has me wondering what they're going to do for the next arc, since they Already had him do the Calm The Plant Down thing and Also had the reference of someone wanting revenge for July. will Neon still want revenge for July too? it would feel a little redundant though, so are they going to do something different?

i'm just gonna have to find out later :P probably tomorrow lol

I got this comment on a story from my Other AO3 Account this morning.

I Got This Comment On A Story From My Other AO3 Account This Morning.

(Info redacted because I prefer keeping these accounts separate but no one follows me on the side blog I have for that account.)

The story was posted almost a year ago and is relatively “popular” by my average statistics even though it has tropes and themes that are big turnoffs for a lot of people (hence separate accounts). This popularity is undoubtedly because it’s a Marvel Loki story and that fandom is massive.

So there is obviously an algorithm or a bot scrubbing ao3 statistics and leaving this comment on fics that meet a certain metric with the main character of the fic inserted into the comment.

I had a little time to kill this morning so I decided to investigate further. And y’all this is so predatory. Come on this journey with me. It made me mad. It may make you mad.

First, if you go to Webnovel’s website, you HAVE to choose between male lead or female lead stories before you can go any further. WTF?

I Got This Comment On A Story From My Other AO3 Account This Morning.

And that’s weird, but this gets so much worse. This is basically a pay-to-read site that has different subscription models. Which… okay BUT! The authors don’t get paid! Look at that comment again. They’re promising a supportive and nurturing community, but zero monetary compensation. It’s basically, “post your stuff here so we can get paid and you can get… nice vibes?” I mean look at this Orwellian writing:

I Got This Comment On A Story From My Other AO3 Account This Morning.

Using the phrase “pay-to-read model” in the same sentence as “qualitative changes in lifestyles for authors” deliberately makes you think that you can get paid and maybe even make a living on this website. But that’s not actually what it says and authors will not receive one red cent.

Oh but wait, the worst is still to come. In case this breaks containment (which I kind of hope it does) this is where I mention that I’m a lawyer in the US.

I don’t do intellectual property or copyright law but I do read and write contracts for a living. So I went to look at their terms of service. It was fun!

Highlights the first, in which Webnovel gets a license to do basically whatever they want with content you post on their site. This is how they get to be paid for people reading authors’ writing without paying them anything.

I Got This Comment On A Story From My Other AO3 Account This Morning.

Highlights the second, in which Webnovel takes no responsibility for illegally profiting off of fan fic. This all says that the writer is 100% responsible for everything the writer posts (even though only Webnovel is making money from it).

I Got This Comment On A Story From My Other AO3 Account This Morning.

Highlights the third which say that by posting, the author is representing that they have the legal right to use and to let Webnovel use the content according to these terms. So if a writer posts fan fiction and Webnovel makes money from people reading the fan fiction, and the House of the Mouse catches wise, these sections say that that’s ALL on the writer.

I Got This Comment On A Story From My Other AO3 Account This Morning.

So that’s a little skeevy to start off with but the thing that is seriously shitty and made me make this post was that these assholes are coming to ao3. They are actively recruiting people in comments on their fan fiction. And they are saying they are big fans of the character you’re writing about and that they share your interests.

I Got This Comment On A Story From My Other AO3 Account This Morning.

They are recruiting fan fiction writers and giving every impression that you can make money from posting fan fiction on their site and hiding the fact that you absolutely cannot but they can make money off of you while you try, deep in their terms of service which no one but a lawyer who writes fan fic and has some time to kill will read.

I see posts on here regularly from people who don’t understand how this stuff works, don’t understand that they (and others) can not legally make a financial profit from fan fiction. And there are tons of people who will not take the time to dig into the details.

Don’t deal with these bastards. Fuck Webnovel.
