i have to read this one
“He is half my soul, as the poets say.”
- The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller
I finished Madeline Miller’s The Song of Achilles a few days ago. I loved it. It is so beautifully written, I found myself repeatedly wailing aloud at sentences. This year I’ve been making an effort to read more fiction (I started out with the Patrick Melrose novels, which I loved) as I spend most of my time reading nonfiction for work. The Song of Achilles. Would recommend.
Patroclus: “The word I use is hubris. Our word for arrogance that scrapes the stars, for violence and towering rage as ugly as the gods.”
I’m now just over a third of the way through the Odyssey. Same translator, Robert Fagles, but wow, the tone is different. Not only am I understanding better why people think the person/people who composed the Iliad differ from those who did the Odyssey, but I’m also understanding why more people seem to prefer the latter. Its pace isn’t as violent and relentless as the Iliad and yet the energy still feels greater somehow. I can far more easily imagine the Odyssey being performed, than the Iliad. But I still find the Iliad incredibly… impressive, is the word. Impressive.

Jack Stauber’s full albums: Night drive music or abstract tunes that make you feel like you’re floating. Jack Stauber’s unextended Micropop songs: Vaguely familiar childhood memory. Jack Stauber’s extended Micropop songs: A combination of the previous two. Lemon Demon: If you took the general feel of the songs from Phineas and Ferb and then made it mad scientist rock perfect for listening to while violating the laws of nature. I DON’T KNOW HOW BUT THEY FOUND ME: A demon of the arts tormenting an immoral and backstabbing rock star for his hubris. The Oh Hellos: You ate a plant that looked pretty and now suddenly you’re in golden fields in a high fantasy world as two extradimensional bards narrate your tales. Cosmo Sheldrake: You ate a plant that looked pretty and ended up in a dreamland where a spirit is guiding you without explicit care for your safety and only a focus on making sure you follow the letter of the land’s laws. Superorganism: I have no clue how it happened but liquid got turned into music and I’m not complaining. Porter Robinson(in Worlds and past it): Someone assembled a bunch of corrupted files of human memories back into an understandable form as songs. (Madeon but less happy) Madeon: The sun and fast moving winds. Like if high fantasy was modernized to the 21st century. (Porter Robinson but less sad) Miracle Musical: Fell into a box of old film reels and now you’re in a nightmare that you aren’t scared of, until you reach The Mind Electric and you are absolutely 100% horrified. Lemaitre: If Porter Robinson made pop and was more than one person. (also tfw you’re a band from norway with a french name and song lyrics in english. mr. worldwide) Half Alive: AJR but orange and less memory based. AJR: Half Alive but brown and less abstract. Caravan Palace prior to Chronologic: The mafia is pissed at you(or you ARE the mafia?) and nobody speaks in full sentences. Caravan Palace after Chronologic: Somebody dipped my electro swing band in a new coat of paint. Cavetown: Not everybody has a guitar and experience with writing good lyrics so somebody’s gotta be the one to say what everybody wants to communicate if only they could make music. Glass Animals in ZABA: Forest spirit teaches you about the wilderness until you piss him off bigtime and and he chases you out. Glass Animals in How To Be A Human Being: Who gave the forest spirit access to the personal lives of several troubled people and WHO GAVE HIM THE RIGHT TO BE SO ON-POINT WITH HIS TAKES ON THEM???

Hello do you know any dark academia movies or TV shows that I can find on Netflix?
* DISCLAIMER: this is based off of my personal loose definition of DA. Some of you may disagree with me on these qualifying but I believe they mostly fit. Also, the movies listed are horror movies. If you have any sensitivity to horror, google the movie before watching it. I know there are more DA shows and movies out there, this post contains Netflix DA content only.
The Magicians- magical university with dark themes! Takes awhile to get over the writing but the gist is pretty good
The End of the F*cking World- School setting and a shit ton of misfortune. Also funny and captivating
Dear White People - university with secret societies! Bonus points for diversity plus this is funny af 10/10
A Series of Unfortunate events - you prob know this from your childhood, one of the OG examples of DA I think. Dark shit and (sometimes) a school setting
Derry Girls- Irish school in the 90’s! Deals with the Irish conflict so semi- dark themes, this one is also hilarious and one of my favorite shows ever
Skins- (kind of DA) dark themes + teens. Earliest seasons are best
The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina- Satan worshipping witches! A witch school! Murder! Corruption! Can be very dark, writing also takes a while to get over, but if you watch long enough you’ll love it
How to Get Away with Murder- the title says it all. (This show also helped get me into DA)
A Nightmare on Elm Street- ik this is barely dark academia but it has a school setting and dark themes BC murder, also vintage v cool
The Scream franchise - teens in school + a murderer. Also vintage and great
Silence of the Lambs- (I know this is barely, again I have a loose definition of DA) main character is in the FBI academy + a murderer. Also vintage
english: cozy borrowed hoodies, rustling papers, “i can’t read”, thermos filled with tea, illegible notes in the margins, sleeping with shakespeare covering your face, daily journaling, doodling through lectures
math: shaky hands during tests, the familiar feel of a calculator in your palm, dead silence when you work, flipping through the textbook, easing through problem sets, swapping pens for pencils, wistfully looks out the window
history: summaries of bills and acts on chart paper, the scratch of sharpies, eternal group projects, granola bars hidden under desks, hand cramps from writing, squinting at the board, being told off for talking to your friends
art: paint stained jeans, braiding your friends’ hair, lightning-quick gesture drawings, rivers of sunlight in the classroom, headphones in, snacks strewn around you, snapping charcoal (accidentally!!), wet clay on your fingers
foreign languages: hours of conjugating charts, subtitled films, loopy gel pens, mumbled presentations, repeated listening exercises, forgetting vocabulary immediately, the sound of someone writing with chalk, late breakfasts
gym/health: rewatching mean girls for the 100th time, iced coffee, morning runs under the gentle sun, oversized t-shirts, squeaky floors under sneakers, gossip on the bleachers, avoiding the school pool, rolling up your shorts
science: high ponytails, rapid memorization that fades after the test, frowning while you work, old classroom TVs with dated science programs, whispers and giggles between powerpoint slides, searching for not-gross lab goggles (and not finding them)
I can never find the right words to tell people what I’m thinking. Telling them I’m tired doesn’t work, but I can’t seem to vocalize that I’m mentally exhausted and sick of existing. Telling them I’m sad doesn’t work either, but I can’t explain that I’m struggling not to kill myself and that the joy in everything in my life is gone and when I wake up to the sun in my eyes, I have to struggle to get myself out of bed because most of me didn’t even want to wake up at all. I can’t tell them I’m numb because what I’m feeling is so much more complex than numb and I don’t have the vocabulary to tell them that I feel like I’m drowning and it terrifies me that I feel nothing as it’s happening, and that my insides want to scream but I can’t even find it in me to shed a tear anymore, that every single aspect of my life feels like it’s shaded in grey because someone sucked out all the colors but I can hardly even remember what colors are because I can no longer remember a time I didn’t feel like this. No, I don’t know how to say that. So I just whisper “I’m fine.”
when i’m about to be happy
you destroy me in pieces
intensions are different,
in tension you leave me
no pain turns my mind into hate
my love is more than i can break
give me peace in this mess that you’ve build
stay, and i will give you more than you ever did.
monolithic love that i’m telling about in my monologue,
it is story for two
and i wasn’t even a drop
in your pool.
The golden gloam we can't beg to stay
Petals are bleeding into the dirt
Now we watch darkness swallow day
The reaper returns, a price we must pay
Writhing, wizened, woozy with hurt
The golden gloam we can't beg to stay
Tongues shredded by what we can't say
Moonlight and tears, goodbyes so curt
Now we watch darkness swallow day
Though we'd rebel we must still obey
Our ghosts are sleeping now, inert
The golden gloam we can't beg to stay
We all have our parts that we must play
Hope is fickle and prone to desert
Now we watch darkness swallow day
The anguish wrapped tight with dismay--
We save the confessions we'd like to blurt
The golden gloam we can't beg to stay
Now we watch darkness swallow day
Real Talk.
I’m broken and I can’t be fixed...
