From worst to best is the ideal choice and it makes you appreciate all of it- the anime the manga and the novel. And it also makes you want to check all of them out.It just makes you wholly fall in love with MaruMa. And, well, for my part it made me fall in love with YuuRam and Wolfram as well❤

Kyo Kara Maoh is streaming legally again on Crunchyroll. Just the first 2 seasons though. So finally I can watch it. How does it compare to the manga/anime? What order do you suggest experiencing the series? Like anime first or manga etc.? Thanx for any help you can give.

Hi! Oh that’s good news, being able to get access to official stuff is always good and it’s nice to see an old anime adaptation get attention.

We have 3 main canons: the original novel canon, the manga canon and the anime canon. There’s also the musical canon, the most recent.

My personal experience with this series started with the anime back in 2008, but at that time there wasn’t much material available to begin with. By the 3rd season I was unhappy with the plot and characters so I started searching for the source, I thought it was the manga, but I ended up discovering the novels and became a hardcore fan of them. I finished the anime anyways, for the sake of completion.

In my opinion the anime adaptation fails to reflect the true nature of the novels, and it also develop it’s own plot, that’s why it stands as the most different canon. They try of course, they have a mix of comedy and drama which is fun, but I felt it was not enough, specially because the darkness we get in the novels is deeper. They also got rid of all the parodies and pop culture references, which are not Gintama-level but they’re a huge part of the story, honestly, I love Yuuri casually talking about David Bowie and costumes of Alien and Predator haha. When I was watching it, at some point I noticed the characters lacked development and they ended roll-backing to repeat basic gags of their first appearances. That’s bothered me and my interest dropped, but I felt the potential was amazing, so I went to the source. Besides my one-time experience, I must say the anime has tons of fans who love it and enjoyed it a lot, it’s what made this series so well known. Please don’t get discouraged to watch it, it’s not my intention at all. The first adventures are supper funny too, and pretty much the same as the first volumes of the originan story plotwise.

The manga does better as an adaptation, but Caloria´s arc blends with the following Seisakoku arc and starts developing other new canon. It already ended and you can find it online in any known website or app that hosts manga. Even with it’s changes, I consider it a better adaptation than the anime and it’s quite enjoyable with the cute art and all. The characters reflects more their novel self too, but some of them are not exactly the same (they’re nicer ahaha, I’m looking at you Saralegui).

Then the novels, best story and characters, and you have a huge amount of material to read and enjoy. They mix comedy, parody, drama, fantasy and adventures. They’ll give you a lot of feelings, one moment you’re laughing and the next you get slapped by darkness and sad, it’s kind of a roller coaster sometimes haha. Also, it’s an isekai series where the MC doesn’t drop his original world but coexist with it, which is pretty interesting. You can find everything translated here. There’s also drama cds adaptations with extra content or special stories, some of these are part of the novel canon, some others are part of the anime canon.

Now, an order… mm, I think that’s too personal for me to tell you what to do! That’s why I tried to give you some information about the 3 different options and my personal experiences and opinions about it. But your experience will be different, like every other fan experience with the series, so please remain open minded to your possibilities. Maybe you like better watching anime (I don’t actually watch much, I’m more of a manga person haha) and that’ll be a good start, or you may prefer mangas, I don’t know. You can also decide if going in order of adaptation from the less complete to the most complete (anime-manga-novel) or vise versa. But what I can truly recommend is to cover everything available sooner or later, specially the original novel.

But welcome to the series! No matter where you start, I’m glad more people is getting interested in the maruma world. Please don’t get overwhelmed by the amount of material and just enjoy. My inbox and chat are also available if you want to send questions.

Finally, at the end of this novel, the Royal Couple gets reunited.

The 82 year old in the prime of youth was proud of all of his accomplishments in the past year.

He’d gotten engaged and adopted a daughter. He even overcame his picky eating habits. However…

“Ugh! Urrrrrrrrgh… bu… buaarrggh!” He still got seasick. (..)

Their hasty journey that His Majesty the Maou’s life depended on did not leave room to be picky about the the method of transportation. Far from a luxurious tourist ship, this cargo ship was so rough around the edges it was about to start growing fur. Despite that, the passengers jammed into the tight quarters without complaint.

(…)

“No, of course this would confuse you. This is a social class you weren’t aware of until now. Unless something extreme happened, you’d never have crossed this gap.” “But he always tries to go ‘over there.’” “Are you talking about His Majesty?” Gisela’s skin, pale as was typical of the healing hands tribe, gained a little color. Her calm, thoughtful green eyes narrowed under her eyelashes as she smiled. “His Majesty is wonderful. He really is a special person.”

“You not an impostor, are you? Are you really my son-in-law, Sir Norman? Do you swear your love to my daughter?”

“Of course, I swear to Gad[14] that I love Miss Flynn!”

I love elephants more, though.

My declaration was supposed to be 'Afro, moved to tears!’ but the Plainsmen’s expression remained hard. I had only deepened his suspicion with my confession that held no true emotion.

Oh, but thankfully Wolfram isn’t here. If he’d heard what I said right now there would be no excuse good enough to get out of that situation.

I don’t even have enough strength left to talk much less ask what’s important about him.   With the next small tremor, I’ll definitely fall.  I have no feeling left in my fingers at all and after losing focus for a split second, my left hand slips off.  My one arm holding on becomes three fingers, two fingers, and lastly my middle finger…

My awareness comes back with a shock like my shoulder is being dislocated. Pale fingers and a sleeve in a familiar color were solidly grasping my right wrist.

“I finally caught you.”

“… Wolf… why are you here..?”

Lord Wolfram von Bielefelt gives a bitter laugh as his beautiful face twists into a grimace. For a moment, I see traces of his eldest brother and despite the state of emergency I’m in, I feel a sense of admiration.

“You’re a flirt and a cheat so I secretly stuck a transmitter on you so I can chase after you anywhere in the world.  Hey, it’s no good with just one hand.  Grab on with both of them.”

“But with your weight… you won’t be able to pull me up.  If things go wrong, you might even-!”

“If that happens…”

Wolfram grabs a hold of my sweaty wrist with both hands as it starts to slip and gives me a stern and manly smile.

“I’ll fall with you.”

Something must have happened while I was away because this is the first time I’ve seen such an expression on his face.

“Trust me.”

Overpowered by his confidence, I swing my dangling left arm overhead.  The Pretty Boy, who used to be a delicate and high-strung little yippy puppy, pulled me up with all his strength a little overenthusiastically and he ended up falling on his back and pulling me down with him.  When I panicked and tried to get off of him, a part of my sleeve or something caught against his cheek and left a small scrape.

“Wolf, you’re bleeding… I’m sorry.”

“You don’t have to apologize.  It’s to be expected,” he says rapidly and then looks around impatiently.  “It would have been nice if Gisela had come to this side.  Unfortunately we’ve been separated.  Anyway Yuuri!  What were you doing and where!?  It’s inexcusable to leave me, your fiancé, behind and go off on some journey without thinking about anyone else!  And on top of that, you couldn’t even pull yourself up as you’re about to fall off a cliff… This weakness is unfit for the Demon King.  This is why I call you a henachoko… Yuuri?”

Didn’t I endure it until now?

“What’s wrong?”

Even when night came, when I was alone, when I met Josak, didn’t I endure it until now?  Then why can’t I bear it anymore?  It’s only been a few dozen seconds since we met again.

“Wolf… Conrad is…”

“I know.”

I must look really miserable.  He’s not even getting mad that I’m talking about the brother he doesn’t like and he’s put an arm around my shoulders.

“It’s okay if you cry.  I was a little distraught as well.”

“He’s not dead.  He’s definitely not dead, but…”

But he’s not here or anywhere.  Lord Weller isn’t coming back.

“You can cry as much as you want.  Gurrier, Gisela and I are all here.  You can cry as much as you want any time now.”

“… Damn it!”

I force myself to pull away and show him my injury from getting caught on a jagged rock.

“Look at this, you can see the flesh… It’s bleeding so much… And then this is where you grabbed me and pulled me up.  It’s all swollen and hot.  I might have sprained my wrist.   Worst case, it might even be broken.  What do I do?  Damn… it hurts… it really hurts.  It’s so ridiculously painful there are tears in my eyes… How stupid am I?”

“You’re not stupid.  The foolish one is Conrart.”

Why are you only saying things like that to me?  Things that just make me hurt even more.

Things that just make me want to cry out and sob.

“But even if you know it’s foolish, there are times you have to do it anyway.  Even you’re like that, right?  You’ve always done things like that.”

“Well sorry for being a fool.”

A man that looked like a companion of Wolfram’s comes running forward while stumbling.  I recognize that closely shaven head.  It’s Günter’s subordinate Dacascos.

Constellations and the Calendar

Did you recently hear that NASA changed the zodiac signs? Nope, we definitely didn’t…

…Here at NASA, we study astronomy, not astrology. We didn’t change any zodiac signs, we just did the math. Here are the details:

First Things First: Astrology is not Astronomy…

Astronomy is the scientific study of everything in outer space. Astronomers and other scientists know that stars many light-years away have no effect on the ordinary activities of humans on Earth.

Astrology, meanwhile, is something else. It’s the belief that the positions of stars and planets can influence human events. It’s not considered a science.

Some curious symbols ring the outside of the Star Finder. These symbols stand for some of the constellations in the zodiac. What is the zodiac and what is special about these constellations?

Imagine a straight line drawn from Earth though the sun and out into space way beyond our solar system where the stars are. Then, picture Earth following its orbit around the sun. This imaginary line would rotate, pointing to different stars throughout one complete trip around the sun – or, one year. All the stars that lie close to the imaginary flat disk swept out by this imaginary line are said to be in the zodiac.

The constellations in the zodiac are simply the constellations that this imaginary straight line points to in its year-long journey.

What are Constellations?

A constellation is group of stars like a dot-to-dot puzzle. If you join the dots—stars, that is—and use lots of imagination, the picture would look like an object, animal, or person. For example, Orion is a group of stars that the Greeks thought looked like a giant hunter with a sword attached to his belt. Other than making a pattern in Earth’s sky, these stars may not be related at all.

Even the closest star is almost unimaginably far away. Because they are so far away, the shapes and positions of the constellations in Earth’s sky change very, very slowly. During one human lifetime, they change hardly at all.

A Long History of Looking to the Stars

The Babylonians lived over 3,000 years ago. They divided the zodiac into 12 equal parts – like cutting a pizza into 12 equal slices. They picked 12 constellations in the zodiac, one for each of the 12 “slices.” So, as Earth orbits the sun, the sun would appear to pass through each of the 12 parts of the zodiac. Since the Babylonians already had a 12-month calendar (based on the phases of the moon), each month got a slice of the zodiac all to itself.

But even according to the Babylonians’ own ancient stories, there were 13 constellations in the zodiac. So they picked one, Ophiuchus, to leave out. Even then, some of the chosen 12 didn’t fit neatly into their assigned slice of the pie and crossed over into the next one.

When the Babylonians first invented the 12 signs of zodiac, a birthday between about July 23 and August 22 meant being born under the constellation Leo. Now, 3,000 years later, the sky has shifted because Earth’s axis (North Pole) doesn’t point in quite the same direction.

The constellations are different sizes and shapes, so the sun spends different lengths of time lined up with each one. The line from Earth through the sun points to Virgo for 45 days, but it points to Scorpius for only 7 days.  To make a tidy match with their 12-month calendar, the Babylonians ignored the fact that the sun actually moves through 13 constellations, not 12. Then they assigned each of those 12 constellations equal amounts of time.

So, we didn’t change any zodiac signs…we just did the math.

A wonderful work of fiction!! If I was well versed in japanese I would've devoured the light novel and manga by now. But unfortunately that is not the case. * sighs *

The plot progression is really well done. And execution is marvellous.

My only hope: The Yuusha doesn't fall in love with the Maou. Seriously. All the effort of making such a character would go to waste.

The beginning of Prison arc. Novel 16 and 17 have little yuuram as Yuuri and Wolf are in two different places for the duration of this arc and they’re both very busy. And besides, I hadn’t planned to return yet, it was Wolfram beside me that pushed us into the sea from the back, so even if it wasn’t of our own volition, in the end we still fell down towards the blue-black whirlpool.

Just as Wolfram said, I know he did it completely out of kindness. He probably wishes I can return to Earth and sleep peacefully, eat Mom’s cooking, then recharge and rest up properly before returning to Shin Makoku. But in the end…

“This is very obviously not Japan.”

“I really wanna see the world His Majesty grew up in… go to where His Majesty grew up… ‘Ears’.”

Of course at this time no one would pay attention to the fact that he got the name wrong.

“I’m still okay.”

“There you go again, you’re always so stubborn with your words.”

“I’m not being stubborn, I really never thought of going to the world where Yuuri grew up.”

“Sometimes you don’t have to force yourself so much, y’know, Wolfram.” Günter’s gaze is condescendingly saying ‘you were just like a pouting brat just now’. (…)

“I’m not forcing myself! To Yuuri and me, it doesn’t matter what kind of world he grew up in, it doesn’t change the fact that Shin Makoku will always be the best!”

(…)“There’s no country better than this, and I believe Yuuri thinks the same. Once his body gets used to it, he would probably want to stay here all the time, right?”

Gisela says decisively. Although it sounds cold just listening about it, Wolfram still decides in his heart that he must go see that later.

If this continues, Wolfram might very likely suffocate.

But Wolfram, on the brink of losing his rational mind, is putting up quite the fight, grabbing Gisela’s wrist and glove, and twisting it unhesitatingly.

“Mgh!”

Gisela clenches her teeth instead of screaming, then turns her body to try and shake off the pressure on her wrist. Although she manages to save her wrist, she also gives Wolfram back his freedom, and his feet finally return to the ground. With that, the Bear Paw has lost its usefulness.

“Did I just witness the moment Anissina’s ma-powered device was defeated with my own eyes?”

I shake my head slowly, saying,

“I won’t run.”

If it were Conrad, by now he would surely be saying with a smile, “I knew it would end up like this.” If it were Wolfram, his pretty face would surely go completely red with anger, and then he’d say, “That’s why you’re such a henachoko.”

Lord von Voltaire isn’t like either of them.

“I mean, don’t you guys get dizzy on human land because of houryoku?” (…) “Wolf’s condition is more obvious. Because his face would immediately turn white, but you resist more.” “I don’t feel any particular change, maybe because this land has weaker houryoku.”

“What did you say–?”

Behind the open door, Wolfram demands loudly from the chair on the deck. He’s at least twenty adult steps away from this side. This is in order to prevent him from accidentally touching the Box, so they deliberately made him leave.

It is said that even when it is spoken in a foreign language, people can still tell between good words and bad ones. Even though Wolfram is so far away, he can still sense people badmouthing him—despite not knowing exactly what’s being said.

The maryoku sealed inside the pouch is Wolfram’s maryoku, and if he were to hear that… his maryoku is unexpectedly small, he would surely blow his top, so Günter hurriedly replies,

“It’s nothing, y’know—Wolfram—Nothing at all!”

Pouch Man mutters,

“Pretty stuck-up, ain’t he.”

“How troubling, he’s always like that, his stubbornness is always so hard for us to handle.”

“Oh~~ I understand his personality fairly well, to think that his stubbornness is very different depending on whether I’m watching it from afar or experiencing it first-hand.”

“You’re saying you’ve seen Wolfram before?”

“Eh—In that case there’s not enough evidence for me to believe you’re His Majesty Shinou, now what do we do?”

“The way you’re suspecting my status like this, if we were back in my time you would have been executed on the spot long ago.”

He continues muttering,

“To think that I’ve gotten softer too. Back in the past, I was very much respected and idolized, so although I never oppressed anyone with my power, no one dared to raise up their heads and look at me directly either. Especially Lord von Christ, I expected you would perform a spray all the way to the ceiling and then faint.”

(…) “Speaking of that~~ I didn’t have a physical body to start with, but that’s something you can imagine. Living alone all this time as a spiritual body, I was looking for an entrance to the real world when I just happened to find a gathering of maryoku that was in pretty decent shape, which is…”

He uses the tip of his fingers to pull at the hair from the pouch,

“Lord von Bielefeld’s maryoku was sealed up in a hundred percent hair, and became a perfect exit that connected the space I was in to this world. From where I’m at, this is just like a little round window made of transparent ice. Then, the second I passed through that little round window, I used the maryoku gathered there to make this thing that looks like a body physical. In other words… it’s like how when a bubble rises from the bottom of a marsh, the mud will fill with air and swell up. However, observe!”

“Y-you watch over everyone?” “That’s right… No, you don’t have to worry, I have no interest in vulgar things, and I don’t watch all of you all day long, after all I only have two eyes. However…”

Shinou looks at the beautiful face similar to his, saying disdainfully, “Wolf sure is stuck-up, despite how cute he is when talking in his sleep.” “You even know that he talks in his sleep!? D-d-d-don’t tell me you’ve heard His Majesty Yuuri’s sleep-talk as well?” “I have, so? The things Yuuri says are pretty descriptive, mostly about ‘assassination’, ‘dead’ and the like. It’s making me wonder recently, is he really a pacifist?” “If you’re talking about Yuuri, I want to hear too!!!” (Wolf)

And the same goes for your two older brothers, Lord von Voltaire Gwendal and Lord Weller Conrart, the Keys of the Boxes of Earth and Wind are hosted on their bodies respectively.” “I am… the Key?” “Didn’t you sense it slightly?” “But… To think… I…”

I bet we’re currently witnessing a special version of ‘Father, give me your daughter!’ But the one acting as the father is the son, and the daughter is his old lady, this difference is too much.

Even if that little skit is so unique, I’m still touched to tears. If I were to find myself in that position in the near future, what should I do? At that time, the fathers would be Wolf and me, and the daughter would be Greta.

Thinking that, I immediately understand Gwendal’s feelings deeply.

Greta returned to Yuuri’s room and waited impatiently while her beloved family hugged her, then led her by the hand to Wolfram’s room. “Wolfram will paint a picture of your mother from her childhood.” “Childhood?” “Yeah. Greta’s mother and the current you are painted pretty much the same.” Greta sat on a large stool for several hours in the same position without moving. Wolfram, closing one eye and measuring the length with a writing brush, painted a picture with strong-smelling paint. “We can’t take a photograph of your mother, but we can paint a portrait. After this we can make one each year. When Greta is an adult, surely the mother from your memories will be almost exactly like the one in the portrait.” “Really?” “Really. Because Greta is her beloved mother’s daughter, right? But-” Yuuri quickly lowered his voice and whispered in Greta’s ear. He felt around in his pocket again and pulled out a small mirror with a light-blue border, putting it in the smiling Greta’s palm. “It’s a secret from Wolf.” “Yeah, a secret from Wolf.” Greta didn’t know whether or not the completed picture actually resembled her mother. That wasn’t because Greta was forgetting her mother’s face; it was definitely because Wolfram’s artistic style was so incredibly abstract that there was no distinction between a person and a tanuki. Nevertheless she hung the portrait in her room, and spoke to it every morning without fail. But ever after that, Greta wished for a portrait or photograph of her mother.

And every time she used the tiny mirror, she remembered.
