“When he was a little boy he hated to get dressed up, to wear button-up shirts. I asked him once why he didn’t like to dress up. He said it was because the buttons smelled bad (…) I sang and told him stories even before he was born. He talked a blue streak when he was very little. He loved stories and songs and would make them up and entertain us constantly. As a child, he was always for the underdog.” Bunny Welch

Elliott Smith - No Confidence Man (In a living room in Portland OR)
“One of the first photos I took of Elliott was on the street here in New York. He lifted up the back of his shirt so I could take a picture of the cuts he had on his back from a fight he’d been in. …
All I remember is that he said, "I was in a bar and I called this guy an asshole … ‘cause he was!” “

you were always making sure i wasn’t cold, lending me your coat, your sweater, even your hat some windy days! & the wristband you solemnly decreed would be mine all evening until i had to go… every night you asked “what about tomorrow?” every night you said “i wish you could stay” but the nights were the price to pay for every hard-earned day bloody sleepless battlefields …

I’m never going to know you now, but I’m going to love you anyhow
“I was actually thinking about someone in particular on that one (Independence Day), which is really… I almost never do. Just a friend of mine from New York named Josh. It was kind of an optimistic song, sort of being like ‘Just relax! You have everything you need to be happy but you just got to wait a little bit.’ I was thinking of him when I made it up.” Elliott Smith
“Place Pigalle” is the name of a place where I’ve been happy.“

“Say Yes was written about someone particular and I almost never do that. I was really in love with someone.”

I may talk in my sleep tonight, ‘cause I don’t know what I am. I’m a little like you, more like Son of Sam.
Heaven Adores You, Elliott Smith: An Interview with Filmmakers Nickolas Dylan Rossi and Kevin Moyer
JOANNA: He definitely comes across as serious in his pictures sometimes because he really didn’t enjoy having his picture taken a lot.
AUTUMN: Well, also he wouldn’t rarely choose the smiling ones. I would try to get him to pick one—“That one’s so good”—and he would say, “I’m sorry, Autumn, I just, I don’t think it’s tough enough, It’s a nice photo though.” [LAUGHING]
SEAN: Ohh, that’s so Elliott.
(from the Autumn de Wilde book)
“A lot of the songs on XO had to do with being really amazed at how quickly people will totally invade your space just because you’re not like them and you don’t deal with things just like they do. They think that you drink too much, or they think that you’re too… they just don’t like how you live or something. It kind of blows my mind, the nerve people have to go parading around as if they know what somebody else ought to do with themselves. To the point where they’ll confront you and tell you what you ought to do!” Elliott Smith
“Even now, it sort of feels like I’m the disappointment because I can’t play any one thing very well. I’m not a very good guitar player. I try to do a lot of things but that’s not the same thing as being technically good. But I don’t mind; the price to pay for being flawless is inhumanity. I like being the way I am, but I can’t play like they can. I don’t have a lot of contact with these people in my family.” Elliott Smith
