I thought I'd give my two cents on how I think the Aus GP will turn out, since it's in a little less than a week. I'd like to think my predictions are pretty reasonable but the delusion never stops. Anyways,
For elaborations, look under the line :)
Oscar Piastri placing P5 or above: Self explanatory really. McLaren is good on fast-speed sections, as Lewis Hamilton pointed out while being chased down by Piastri in Jeddah, and Albert Park has a few. He's also been able to place in the top half of points before, so it's just a matter of whether or not he can do it again for his home race.
Daniel Ricciardo in points: He hasn't had the best start to the season, but it's Australia and he was able to do it in the McLaren even with all the DNFs and frustration so hopefully the car (and him) are good enough to get in some points this weekend.
Ferrari on the podium: They've got the second-best car this year, as most people have pointed out, and they've been on the podium in the last two races already. I've got no doubts they'll do it again. The only problem might be Carlos Sainz, who recently had surgery for appendicitis and might not be in top condition.
No Red Bull 1-2: We all know Verstappen will win, unless reliability issues or something else arises. So the real concern is whether or not Perez will make it onto P2 and join his teammate, since competition between him and the Ferraris has occurred the last two races. However he has the skill and the car, so I'm sure he'll at least be a podium sitter on Sunday.
Nico Hulkenberg in the points: I'll be honest I'm starting to become a Hulkenberg fan. Despite being in a HAAS, he's managed to pull in a P10 in quali (Bahrain) and in the Saudi Arabian GP. Obviously Jeddah was a team effort, but I think his season is off to a good start.
Max Verstappen wins with a less than 5 second lead: This is less of a prediction and mostly just me wanting to see his car broadcasted for longer. In all likeliness, unless Red Bull messes up their strategy, he's probably going to win with a larger lead.
Alex Albon in the points: Williams seems pretty promising this year! Albon has been able to pull points for them before, and he pulled some nice moves to overtake in Jeddah. The car has had issues, but they seem to mostly have been resolved.
Tell me your predictions!! I'm personally super excited even though I can't attend the race, and I hope everyone else is as hyped after one week of no F1.
Pre-testing can be pretty boring to watch, but luckily for me I was studying so I had it on as background noise the whole time. So here are some notable moments since testing week is over:
Alex Albon's Williams stopped on track on the first day of testing, bringing out a yellow flag (but not a red one! because he stopped on a safe side of the track). Luckily for all Williams' fans (yeah all four of us) it was an issue with the fuel pump and was resolved.
Leclerc's bad luck streak continues after he hits a loose drain on the track, and Day 2's morning testing is discontinued with an hour left to go. Hamilton's Mercedes also hit the drain cover, hence the photo.
Alex Albon makes an appearance in the commentary box on night 2! He gave us valuable insight, like how apparently everyone was filmed doing the "George Russell pose" and they just went with George....poor guy. On the other hand, I think Alex would be a wonderful commentator and should absolutely try after he retires (which, hopefully, is no time soon)
The end of night 2 saw the first 'lights out and away we go' of the season, with all the cars lining up for a practice start. Leclerc went first, Russel second and Zhou Guanyu third (!!!!)
And that's it!! My highlights of the f1 pre-testing week :)
Q2
Out: Gasly, Albon, Stroll, Ocon, Perez (P15-11)
Tsunoda goes third fastest, Daniel Ricciardo makes it into Q3 just barely (less than a tenth faster than Perez in P11, who had an unfortunate bump on the first chicane)
Verstappen and Leclerc exchange fastest time after fastest time
Q1
Out: Sergeant, Alonso, Magnussen, Zhou, Bottas (P20 to P16)
Oscar Piastri investigated for impeding on Magnussen
Logan Sargeant's lap time deleted for track limits, drops from P17 to P20 :(
Hulkenberg goes third fastest
Both Williams and Alonso hit the gravel, turn 18 also almost caught out Verstappen and Norris
Both Alpines and RBs into Q2!!
Verstappen went fastest in Q1 in the last few seconds
there is aura
then there is whatever this is
If there's a red bull seat open next year and it doesn't go to Yuki I might go to Milton Keynes and maul Christian Horner and Helmut Marko myself
"Stroll not at all happy with his penalty" my brother in christ you caused the collision
Say what you will about winners and losers of the 2024 Sรฃo Paulo GP, the ones who had it the hardest were the mechanics and engineers. They worked injured, sleepless, burnt out. They worked after nearly a month away from family. They worked without time to eat or rest. First to the track and last to leave. And theyโre not flying home in private jets
The Sainz vs Ricciardo fight for 4th is singlehandedly raising my blood pressure
LOGAN SARGEANT OVERTAKE ON THE WORD FREEDOM ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ
Seeing people genuinely be so happy for Zhou after he scored Sauber's first points of the season warms my heart so much. He's suffered so much scrutiny and pressure, being Chinese but also just being stuck in a bad car and not being able to show much performance. I've also never really heard him mentioned outside of his crash, his back marker-ing or at the Chinese GP, so I'm glad he's getting his moment :)
