My McLennon Theory:
I’ve seen a lot of discussions about what happened in India recently and decided to give my thoughts about the nature of what went down, as well as the aftermath.
Fully diving into solo J&P content the last 9 months, I feel like Paul has major regrets for not telling John outright “I Love You”. Just as John expressed that he never felt loved. (May Pang’s account in California of John screaming ‘Nobody loves me’ & the song ‘How’— among others...)
Personally, I’m 99% certain that a romantic/ physical relationship occurred between them. Paul maintaining his ‘immovable heterosexuality’ could never communicate the emotional impact of what their relationship was because he couldn’t accept that he was in love with a man (cue period typical homophobia).
John would have shouted it from the rooftops if it wouldn’t have been a PR nightmare for the band.
Like so many others have speculated, everything came to a head in India. Truths were told, feelings were hurt and a fight turned into a legal dissolution of partnership (divorce). Afterwards, I think they both felt so guilty for their stubbornness and lack of sympathy for the other.
John pretending that life was good without Paul, when really he wasn’t ever as good as he was with him. The codependency of John’s life is a completely different subject. One that I am not capable of analyzing since I am not a psychiatrist. I do feel he succumbed to the notion that he’d never be as good alone as he was with Paul.
Paul however did move on. He was successful. Touring, kids, marriage etc. all those things that portrayed the image ‘the best revenge is living well.’
Then, John dies suddenly and it pains me to think that John never heard the one person he needed the most validation from, say “I Love You”. Paul realizes this and is still living with the guilt of his indifference.
‘Here Today’ is his admission of fucking up and missing the moment. Which is why AFTER John is dead, the songs Paul writes have significantly changed. He’s a man living with the biggest regret that a human can have. He couldn’t swallow his pride and accept that he did love John in a way more than ‘a brother’
For that, I would never want to be Paul and what he’s endured since losing John.
The dynamic of these two is so fascinating, even when I don’t try to engage in discussions on this platform, I’m always thinking of them.
How tragic it really was, the lovers that never were and the truth that won’t ever be told.
*full disclosure: everything written has been my opinion and speculation with no ill will or contempt intended towards either party
Everyone who got an advanced copy of the McLennon book yesterday - are you done reading it yet? Can you tell us everything and or send it to me? 😂😘

Colin Hanton says, ‘John and Paul circled each other like cats.’ Their interest in each other was deeper and more complex than it appeared to anyone watching the encounter. There was instant recognition, a chemical connection made between two boys who sensed in the other the same heartfelt commitment to this music, the same do-or-die. For all the circling, posturing, and checking out that went on, what it all came down to was love at first sight.”
