Unpopular opinion: the 2010-12 Hetalia fandom wasn’t that bad. It had its bad sides and controversial fans/events like any other fandom, including the Hetalia fandom today. But it built such a vaste community and a strong sense of belonging that old Hetalia fans still feel today, even people who are no longer into Hetalia but left it on good terms miss it. So many good fanfictions are from that era, so many excellent fanarts were posted at those times, countless AMVs, multilanguages, MMD and cosplay music videos and animations made by fans in their free time from scratch (like the ones from NicoNico). Do you think so many people would have stuck with Hetalia back then if the fanbase was truly so toxic and awful to make it impossible to have a positive enough experience with it? I had my bad experiences with it, too, like most others, but I still miss it.
Stop demonizing it, please. Because if Hetalia is still relatively well-known today, it’s thanks to the old Hetalia fandom. It’s thanks to all the people who worked on their free time to build such a large community, to all the people who provided (and keep providing) translations for all kinds of Hetalia-related content, to all the people who spread it through beautiful art and videos, to all the people who decided to invest so much love and research in fanfictions so well-written that may even be printed out as physical books. Have respect for all these people, please. Don’t insult it based on just its bad apples, because that means insulting the tons of great people who blessed us with great content new fans still enjoy today, too.
