Even Though Alice Was Nearly To Her Due Date, She Ignored Moody’s Hints That She Should Take A Break

Even though Alice was nearly to her due date, she ignored Moody’s hints that she should take a break and start her maternity leave. Especially with Frank gone, Alice couldn’t stand to sit around the house alone and think about all of the things that had been happening lately or how nervous she was for childbirth. She needed a distraction, and work had always been good at keeping her busy. So despite the fact that she was moving slower than an old man with a cane, Alice dragged herself to work.

As she entered the Atrium, choosing to apparate rather than floo directly into the Auror offices at this stage of her pregnancy, Alice looked around, always marveling at the majesty that was the Atrium. Beginning to make her way towards the elevators, Alice greeted those she knew with a smile and nod. But when she stepped off the elevator onto the floor of the DMLE, Alice’s smile became a little more forced.

Her cousin Bellatrix was standing in the hallway, an annoyed look on her face. It was impossible for Alice not to think of all the things Emmeline had shared, the way Bellatrix had tortured her. Alice had always struggled with how she should feel about her family. She had been fairly certain of Bella and Freya’s loyalties, though they had never been caught for anything, but not knowing for sure had always helped her to interact with them with a normal familial affection. But now that she had heard of the horrors Bellatrix had put Emmeline through, it was a lot harder for Alice to see Bellatrix as anything but a monster. “Oh, Bellatrix. Hello.” Alice stumbled over her words, feeling awkward.

If leaving that morning hadn’t been necessary he wouldn’t have done it.  His knowledge of babies, while still limited, had grown significantly the past nine months, and from what he understood birth could be rather unpredictable.  But going to the office was a far cry from Romania, and if she needed him she knew how to get him home.  Apparation would have him home in five minutes flat.  But he was relieved that hadn’t been necessary.  He was relieved he could do the last minute task at the office without trouble and get home to her before things got moving.

He carefully kicked his shoes off at the door and put down the bag he took to the office before finding Alice on the couch.  He wrapped an arm around her back, brushing his thumb in a circular motion against her arm while he considered his answer.  She needed to rest, but she also deserved the truth from him.  “Chaotic,” he admitted.  “some Muggle baiting incident up by Kent.  But not unmanageable.  They’ll sort things out just find there, and we can sort our things out here.  How are you feeling?”

Alice sighed contentedly as Frank’s thumb brushed her back, sinking into the comfort of his touch. His mere presence had an immediate effect on calming her nerves, and she was grateful for that. When she was with him, all of the fears that she had didn’t seem quite as big as when she was alone. They were still there, but far more manageable. Alice frowned at the news, saddened by the fact that she didn’t feel any surprise to hear it. Things like this were becoming the norm lately, and there was no reason to think that it would slow down just because she was on maternity leave.

Alice bit her lip at his question, wondering how much to say. Frank had been gone so much for the second half of her pregnancy that so far she hadn’t shared any of the worries that had been circulating through her head and her heart. She felt a little silly about them, but even though she knew it was ridiculous, she couldn’t banish the fear that she wouldn’t be a good mother. “I’m okay,” she finally said, her answer coming slowly. “Just...nervous, I guess.” She shrugged, clearly holding back.

“Oh, don’t sell Aunt Dru short, she’d at least be passive aggressive about it for double that, might even go to her grave giving you grief about it” He joked, though they both knew the truth that laid within it. Aunt Druella was just like many of the older mothers of pureblood society, and he’d take a guess any rich society, knew how to use proper manners and how to hold a proper grudge. “ It’s weird to think Cousin Bella was getting married and I was just starting Hogwarts.” Evan laughed with a shake of his head. “ Weird to think It was ten years ago I started Hogwarts, Time flies doesn’t it?” Part of him

“ Thank you, a good fashion must run in the family because you’re easily one of the best-dressed ladies I’ve encountered tonight.” He grinned at her compliment and easily threw one back. He’d liked cousin Alice despite the distance in beliefs from her and the other Rosier’s, and the age gap between the two it was always enjoyable to see her. She’d reminded him of his sisters, the side of them that he’d always been allowed to see. Alice was kind and cared for him, something that couldn’t be said of all Rosiers. “ You’re in luck! I came with a friend, but I’m under direct orders to mingle with family, and keeping you company fits the description. Let’s find us a table” Evan said offering his arm to Alice, waiting to walk until she’d taken it.

Alice laughed, thinking that Evan was exactly right. No one had perfected the art of passive aggression quite like their Aunt Druella or her cohort of perfect pureblood society mothers. Though she might take the cake, and Alice felt a rush of gratitude (not for the first time this evening) that her parents were so very different. Her upbringing had been the polar opposite of her cousins’, and though she felt a twinge of guilt that she had gotten off so easily, mostly she just felt pretty bloody lucky. “Wow, ten years, that is mental,” she said in a hushed voice, shaking her head. “Ah, yes, ickle Evan starting Hogwarts. I’m glad I was able to be there to see you in all your adorable awkward eleven year old glory.”

“Well, I’m quite grateful to your friend, because I would love some company.” Taking his arm, Alice let him steer her to one of the empty tables, and they sat down next to one another, Alice sighing in relief to be off her feet. Resting her hands on her round belly, Alice leaned back in her chair. “Merlin, I feel like a whale,” she said with a chuckle, patting the bump. She turned her attention back on her younger cousin, a smile breaking out on her face at the opportunity to catch up with him. “So, tell me about your date. Tell me about your life. It’s been ages since we properly caught up.”
