âOh, donât sell Aunt Dru short, sheâd at least be passive aggressive about it for double that, might even go to her grave giving you grief about itâ He joked, though they both knew the truth that laid within it. Aunt Druella was just like many of the older mothers of pureblood society, and heâd take a guess any rich society, knew how to use proper manners and how to hold a proper grudge. â Itâs weird to think Cousin Bella was getting married and I was just starting Hogwarts.â Evan laughed with a shake of his head. â Weird to think It was ten years ago I started Hogwarts, Time flies doesnât it?â Part of him
â Thank you, a good fashion must run in the family because youâre easily one of the best-dressed ladies Iâve encountered tonight.â He grinned at her compliment and easily threw one back. Heâd liked cousin Alice despite the distance in beliefs from her and the other Rosierâs, and the age gap between the two it was always enjoyable to see her. Sheâd reminded him of his sisters, the side of them that heâd always been allowed to see. Alice was kind and cared for him, something that couldnât be said of all Rosiers. â Youâre in luck! I came with a friend, but Iâm under direct orders to mingle with family, and keeping you company fits the description. Letâs find us a tableâ Evan said offering his arm to Alice, waiting to walk until sheâd taken it. Â
...
Alice laughed, thinking that Evan was exactly right. No one had perfected the art of passive aggression quite like their Aunt Druella or her cohort of perfect pureblood society mothers. Though she might take the cake, and Alice felt a rush of gratitude (not for the first time this evening) that her parents were so very different. Her upbringing had been the polar opposite of her cousinsâ, and though she felt a twinge of guilt that she had gotten off so easily, mostly she just felt pretty bloody lucky. âWow, ten years, that is mental,â she said in a hushed voice, shaking her head. âAh, yes, ickle Evan starting Hogwarts. Iâm glad I was able to be there to see you in all your adorable awkward eleven year old glory.â
âWell, Iâm quite grateful to your friend, because I would love some company.â Taking his arm, Alice let him steer her to one of the empty tables, and they sat down next to one another, Alice sighing in relief to be off her feet. Resting her hands on her round belly, Alice leaned back in her chair. âMerlin, I feel like a whale,â she said with a chuckle, patting the bump. She turned her attention back on her younger cousin, a smile breaking out on her face at the opportunity to catch up with him. âSo, tell me about your date. Tell me about your life. Itâs been ages since we properly caught up.âÂ

Marlene had to laugh, âIf he doesnât knock this shit off weâre going to have to step it up a notch to get him to cut it out. Maybe we should get him some chaps and see if he has any shame.â She thought about that for a moment and then dry heaved dramatically, âOn second thought, he would probably try to wear them every day, so maybe not.â The last thing they needed was to see Moody try to wear chaps over his kilt. Sheâd have to gauge her own eyes out, probably.
âHonestly, itâs probably the most excitement this stuffy old party will have, they should be thanking you.â It was a little difficult not to hold some disdain for big Pureblood events after being subjected to them when she was younger. Her family now had a reputation for being âblood traitorsâ, but it hadnât always been like that.
âYeah, heâs been gone for ages now, hasnât he? Whatâs up with that?â Marlene would probably have to punch herself if she blew Aliceâs cover, but there was nothing wrong with a short conversation before she slipped back into the crowd. It was nice to get to talk to her. âYeahâ, Marlene sighed, crossing her arms. They had all known the dangers, but it certainly felt more real being surrounded by people they both knew and suspected were death eaters. It was an absolutely mental plan, which was why sheâd been in favour of it, but she still worried for her friends. âYou can leave at any point, you know.â She pointed out, not unkindly, âNobody will judge you if you feel like itâs too risky, youâve got a little one to think of too.â
...
Alice laughed, nodding in agreement with Marleneâs sentiment. These parties, however lavish and grand, were nothing short of dull. Alice had hated them as a child; though her parents didnât attend many of the parties all that often, they were careful not to burn too many bridges with the rest of the Rosiers, so she had been subjected to her fair share of boring parties. Luckily for her, Marlene had often been there to liven them up, so it felt full circle that she was here tonight, even if she wasnât really supposed to be.Â
Alice shrugged. âHe tries to get back at least once every couple of weeks, but itâs usually only for a few hours. I guess itâs taking longer than expected.â She couldnât really say more, not even to Marlene, because it was Auror business and not anything to do with the Order, so she gave an apologetic smile for her vague response. âMoody promised heâd be back in time for the birth, though, so fingers crossed I donât go too early.âÂ
Aliceâs smile softened at Marleneâs words. âThanks, Mar, but Iâll be okay. I have the perfect alibi since I was actually invited. I would have come even if we hadnât come up with this insane plan.â She shook her head, making it clear that she hadnât been one of the ones on board with this. It seemed more risky than it was worth. âBeing able to be here and help if someone gets into trouble is far less anxiety-provoking than sitting at home wondering whatâs going on.âÂ

The return of Emmeline had brought back a relative calm to the Order, most of the members busy with reunions. The Death Eaters probably were in the scramble that theyâd had been in just days ago, but he took pleasure in that. Serves them right for what theyâd do to innocents and the torture they deemed appropriate to use on Emmeline. Alastor didnât exactly know those details yet, but heâd seen the state of her when theyâd ârescuedâ her, and he had it on good authority sheâd been given a few healing potions. If she looked like that even after help, he can only imagine the extent they went to with her. Â He and Alice would know shortly the exact details, and he knew heâd end up feeling some sort of way about it all. Emmeline was practically his daughter, debriefing was always hard, but with the added personal connection he knew itâd be harder. He was grateful Alice was willing to join him on it.
âYouâre fully aware of how these go, but I must tell you I think it might be one of the worst cases weâve dealt with. It may take a lot of time, and I can probably safely say we might have to break with it.â He stated to Alice before theyâd go in, it was better to get some things out before starting. Theyâd probably tell Emmeline the same, but they would need to be on the same page before we enter. He knew they both had a special close connection to Emmeline, it wouldnât be like at work or with members not directly working with them thatâd been caught up in it all. â Now, do you have anything you want to say before we let Mary know weâve come for it?â

...
Alice was far enough along in her pregnancy that she didnât join Moody for many of these debriefings anymore. In the time they were living in, pretty much any debriefing was exhausting and heartbreaking, no matter what the situation. But this one would be even worse. It wasnât just one of their Aurors (though Merlin knew they both cared about all of their Aurors), this was someone who was like family, especially to Moody. Alice had known him for a long time now, and he knew that he didnât easily let people in as closely as he had with Emmeline. So when he asked Alice to join him for the debriefing, Alice knew that she had to say yes, no matter how close she was to popping. This wasnât something he could do on his own, nor would she want him to have to.
As Moody spoke, Alice nodded. Of course she already knew everything he was telling her, but she knew that he needed to say it. Alastor Moody was the kind of man who was used to being in control, and this situation had been so far out of his control that it had to have shaken him up quite a bit. As he finished, Alice gave him a soft smile and reached out to put her hand on his arm. âI know this will be hard for all of us, but we can take it as slowly as Emmeline needs. What matters is that sheâs safe now, and weâll do everything we can to keep it that way.â Giving him a serious look, she nodded, motioning for him to lead the way.

Where: We all know where Who: @alicelxngbottomâ
With hands in his pockets, Evan wandered the main room under the request of Greta that he spend some time interacting with the friends and family she knew heâd have at the party. Normally one would take it as a bad sign that their date had been so intent on getting rid of them, but theyâd only come as friends and he knew Greta had only good intentions on the matter. She was big on family and friends, of course, she wouldnât want to be the cause of him missing out by standing by her side all night.
Heâd almost called it quits on the rounds he was making around the party, figured heâd been gone long enough, made enough conversation to please Greta on his return. However, his plans immediately changed when he spotted a familiar figure, albeit a bit bigger than when heâd last saw her, but his cousin was pregnant that was part of the whole deal.âNot even late pregnancy can keep you from the duty of showing up to a Pureblood party, huh?â Â He asked, approaching not to think if sheâd recognize him with a mask or not, after all, heâd been able to pick her out.
...
Alice was just beginning to eye the tables on the far end of the ballroom, thinking about giving a rest to her aching feet, when a familiar voice floated towards her. Turning to find the source, her face broke into a wide smile as her eyes landed on her cousin Evan. He may have been wearing a mask, but she would recognize him anywhere. Of all the cousins on her fatherâs side of the family, Evan was probably her favorite. Andromeda was beginning to grow on her too, and Annalise was always amusing to be around, but none of them had the easy charm and cheer that Evan seemed to possess, a remarkable feat considering how harsh her uncle always acted towards his only son.
Alice laughed, shaking her head. âWell, ten years is a lot to celebrate,â she pointed out, motioning toward where their cousin Bellatrix stood across the room. âBesides, you know as well as I do that if any of us happened to miss this, Aunt Druella would bring it up in the most passive aggressive way possible for the next ten years.â Taking a slight step back, she gave him a quick once-over, smiling. âNow you look quite dashing tonight, Evan. Do you have a date you need to get back to, or can you keep your old pregnant cousin some company? I was just about to find a place to sit down and rest my swollen feet.â
I brake for birds. I rock a lot of polka dots. I have touched glitter in the last 24 hours. I spend my entire day talking to children. And I find it fundamentally strange that youâre not a dessert person. Thatâs just weird, and it freaks me out. And Iâm sorry I donât talk like Murphy Brown. And I hate your pantsuit. I wish it had ribbons on it or something to make it just slightly cuter. And that doesnât mean Iâm not smart and tough and strong.
